DuBOIS – James Conway and the previously winless DuBois Beavers stunned the visiting Brashear Bulls 23-14 Friday night at a rainy and muddy E.J. Mansell Stadium.

Conway, the senior who was replaced at quarterback a game and a half ago by Danny Henry, moved to fullback and rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. He most likely got the majority of the carries because starting tailback Garrett Malmgren was hurt in the junior varsity game earlier in the week.

Conway’s 7-yard touchdown run with 4:35 left in the game put the game out of reach for the Beavers, who improved to 1-8 and avoided a winless season for the first time since going 0-10 in 2002. Brashear, which is tied for Oliver at the top of the Pittsburgh City League standings, dropped to 6-3 but 0-2 against non-City League opponents.

D.J. Smith’s 31-yard field goal with 9:27 left to play put DuBois ahead for good 16-14. Smith’s kick was set up by a highlight film special teams play by Cody Royer.

With Brashear attempting to punt, Royer got to punter Jordan Allen before he could get the ball away, tackling him for a 10-yard loss at the Bulls’ 40. Nine plays later, Smith’s kick gave DuBois the lead.

The game-securing touchdown was set up by Emile Khoury’s interception at the Bulls’ 40 two plays after the ensuing kickoff.

DuBois, which outgained Brashear 231-172, limited the Bulls to 11 yards of offense in the second half on 15 plays from scrimmage.

Brashear quarterback Jermaine Robinson ran for both Bulls touchdowns, a 3-yarder in the first quarter and a 1-yarder in the second quarter.

Scott Crytser, who rushed for 82 yards on 15 carries for the Beavers, scored his team’s first two touchdowns, a 10-yarder on the team’s first possession of the game and a 20-yarder in the second quarter.

Brashear led 14-13 at halftime thanks to a 2-point conversion run by Patrick Murphy following the Bulls second touchdown.
