COUDERSPORT WINS SECOND STRAIGHT AML TITLE |
Nov. 4, 2006 |
COUDERSPORT – Winning has been a simple formula for Coudersport this year: run Chris Cavallari a lot of times
and play great defense.
The Falcons followed the formula to perfection Saturday in the AML Title game beating Curwensville 14-6 to win their second straight AML Title. The win was the fourth straight for Coudersport over the Golden Tide in the past two seasons including the second this year and the second in a row in the AML Title game. Coudersport improves to 2-3 in the last five AML Title games, while Curwensville is 1-2 in the last three beating Coudy in 2004. Cavallari, who entered the game as the second leading rusher in District 9 with 1,259 yards, carried 28 times for 139 yards and both touchdowns to lead the Falcons. He had over 60 percent of Coudersport’s total offense in the game and scored on runs of 5 and 30 yards helping the Falcons build a 14-0 halftime lead. Nick Sipes, the leading rusher in D9, was about all the offense Curwensville had on the night running 26 times for 142 yards and a touchdown. The Tide (8-2) were held to 184 yards of total offense. Coudersport’s first touchdown came at the end of a 97-yard drive that saw Cavallari carry the ball seven times for 41 yards and the touchdown. Curwensville then helped the Falcons make it 14-0 failing on a fourth-and-2 on its own side of the field giving Coudersport the ball at the Golden Tide 40. That led to the 30-yard scoring run by Cavallari a couple of plays later. The Golden Tide finally got on the board in the fourth on a 6-yard touchdown run by Sipes that finished off an 11-play, 64-yard drive. Sipes had the ball on 10 of the plays for 59 of the yards. Coudersport, though, answered with a drive that took 5:30 off the clock to help seal the win. Boomer Wetzel and Justen Kinder split time at quarterback for Coudersport combining to go 3-for-12 passing for 51 yards and an interception. Wetzel was 2-for-6 for 39 yards and the interception, while Kinder was 1-for-6 for 12 yards. Carin Knight added five carries for 36 yards. Shawn Sopic was 2-for-9 passing for 24 yards and one interception for Curwensville.
