District 9 Class A Playoffs - First Round |
By Rich Rhoades NEW BETHLEHEM – Junior Jake Smith was the center of attention as he led the Redbank Valley Bulldogs to a 34-0 shutout of visiting Keystone in the opening round of the District 9 Class A playoffs Friday night. Smith had a hand in all five of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns, running for three and passing for two. He rushed for 142 yards on 21 carries. Redbank Valley (8-3) notched its second shutout of the year against Keystone (6-5), limiting the Panthers to only 52 yards of offense and four first downs. It’s the first venture into the Class A playoffs for the traditionally Class AA Bulldogs, who are the second seed. They’ll host Saturday’s Curwensville-Ridgway quarterfinal winner next week, probably Saturday. Redbank Valley is looking for its first district title since 1996 and the win over Keystone was its second playoff win since then. The Bulldogs obviously dominated field position and time possession with just over 30 minutes. One turnover on the team’s opening possession marred what was almost a perfect night in front of the home crowd. After Smith’s bad pitch to Alex Bladel wound up a turnover at the Keystone 21, the Bulldogs forced Keystone to punt. They only needed to go 36 yards on seven plays, the big play being Smith’s 24-yard run off a fake punt on fourth-and-14 at the Keystone 40. Three plays later he scored from two yards out. Redbank Valley’s next possession went 64 yards on 13 plays, culminating on Smith’s 1-yard TD run with 6:46 left in the second quarter. All but one play was a run and Smith called his own number seven times. Smith had 137 yards on 17 carries by halftime. Redbank Valley made it 21-0 in the third quarter on Smith’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Bladel at the 5:41 mark. In the fourth, the Bulldogs scored twice in a span of less than two minutes. Smith’s 33-yard scoring pass to Mike Booher made it 27-0 following the missed point-after kick with 9:23 remaining. Two plays after the ensuing kickoff, Craig Hibell intercepted Keystone quarterback Ben Black at the 26 and returned it to the Keystone 7. Two plays later, Smith scored again on a 1-yard run. The point-after kick set the final score at the 7:56 mark of the fourth quarter. |
