District 9 Class A Playoffs - First Round

Some of the information for this story was found in the Nov. 13 edition of the Tri-County Sunday out of DuBois.

JOHNSONBURG – We don’t know where the Johnsonburg Rams football team would be without Calvin Grumley.

But we do know where the Rams are with him – two wins from their first District 9 title in 20 years.

Grumley ran, passed, returned and kicked fourth-seeded Johnsonburg (8-2) past second-seeded Cameron County (6-4) 17-6 in the opening round of the District 9 Class A Playoffs Saturday night in Johnsonburg. It is the Rams first playoff win in 10 seasons.

Grumley ran 19 times for 111 yards and both Rams touchdowns while also kicking a 26-yard field goal and throwing a 2-point conversion pass.

The senior, who was better known for his basketball abilities than his football play before this season, got things started right off the bat for Johnsonburg when he returned the game’s opening kickoff 28 yards to the Rams 42.

He then had a 26-yard run and a 24-yard pass that put Johnsonburg inside the Cameron 10-yard line before finishing off the drive with a 4-yard run with 9:23 left in the first quarter. The touchdown gave the Rams a 6-0 lead.

Grumley gave Johnsonburg some breathing room at halftime after the Rams defense came up with a huge play late in the half.

Judd Zilcosky sacked Cameron County quarterback Jordan Crane while forcing a fumble at the same time. The loose ball was recovered by Johnsonburg’s Cody Rosenhoover at the Cameron 36.

The Rams had a 5-yard penalty that backed them up to the 41. But Grumley took care of the five yards plus the other 36 with a 41-yard scoring run off a scramble after he couldn’t find an open receiver to put Johnsonburg ahead 12-0 with 50 seconds left in the first half. Grumley then hit John Yonker with the 2-point conversion pass to give Johnsonburg a 14-0 halftime lead.

Cameron County got back into the game with a big play of its own when Nick Malize blocked a Grumley punt and then returned the block to the Johnsonburg 29.

That set up a 7-yard touchdown pass from Crane to Malize that cut the lead to 14-6 with 5:26 left in the third quarter.

Late in the game, Grumley came up with a big defensive play when he intercepted a Crane pass at the Cameron 25 and returned it to the Red Raiders 13. The interception atoned for a missed 36-yard field goal by the senior moments earlier and set up a game-sealing 26-yard 3-point boot with 2:31 left.

Grumley added a 2-for-8 passing night for 35 yards and an interception while returning two kicks for 51 yards, two punts for 40 yards while averaging 41 yards on three punts and going 1-for-2 on field-goal tries. He accounted for 146 of the Rams 189 yards of total offense.

Abram Zoschg led Cameron County with 13 carries for 64 yards, while Crane was 4-for-14 passing for 38 yards, one touchdowns and one interception. The Red Raiders had 165 yards of total offense.

NOTES – Johnsonburg’s lone District 9 title game with a 20-6 win over Clarion in 1987, the first year of the D9 playoffs … The six points allowed marked the eighth time this season the Rams have allowed seven or fewer points.
