PORT ALLEGANY 41, SHEFFIELD 22

SHEFFIELD – Derick Morey threw three touchdowns including two to RJ Shively to lead Port Allegany to a 41-22 win at Sheffield Saturday afternoon.

Morey was nearly perfect going 6-for-9 for 104 yards and the three scores, while Shively had three catches for 46 yards and the two touchdowns.

Nick Nichols and Chad Saltsman each went over 100 yards rushing as well helping the Gators (1-1 overall, 1-1 AML North) gain 270 yards on the ground. Nichols had 15 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown, while Saltsman had 18 carries for 107 yards and a score. Nichols also had two catches for 14 yards and a touchdown while also recording a sack.

Colby Brookens added two catches for 88 yards for Port and an interception on defense, while Kord Kinney added a 2-yard touchdown run and a sack.

After a scoreless first quarter, Sheffield took a 7-0 lead when it recovered a fumble in the end zone, but Port answered with the final 21 points of the half to go ahead 21-7 at halftime.

Nichols got the scoring started when he caught a 9-yard pass from Morey. Morey then hit Shively with another 9-yard scoring toss to make it 14-7 before Saltsman capped the opening-half scoring with a 1-yard run.

Port made it 28-7 in the third quarter when Morey hit Shively with an 18-yard pass.

Sheffield cut the lead to 28-14 on a 15-yard Michael Bryant run in the third quarter, but Nichols (5 yards) and Kinney (2 yards) had touchdown runs before the quarter was over to make it 41-14. Saltsman was 6-for-7 on extra points on the afternoon.

Sheffield got the game’s final touchdown on a fourth quarter 8-yard pass from Jordan Copley to Jesse Parsons.

Matt Bryant led Sheffield with 17 carries for 76 yards, while Michael Bryant had six for 50 and the TD while adding two catches for 23 yards. Parsons had two grabs for 22 yards and a touchdowns and three carries for nine yards, while Jason Borst had three catches for 36 yards. 

CLEARFIELD 39, BROOKVILLE 35

BROOKVILLE – Isiah Morgan scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a 4-yard run with 4:23 left to play to rally Clearfield to a 39-35 win over Brookville in a see-saw D9 League game Friday night in Brookville.

Brookville (1-1 overall, 0-1 D9 League) led 35-24 following a 54-yard touchdowns pass from Shane Heschke to Tyler Ross with 6:49 left in the game.

But Clearfield (1-1, 1-0) struck quickly on a 66-yard halfback option pass from Adam Jury to Drew Hipps six seconds later to close to within three points at 35-32 after the two-point conversion.

Clearfield led 24-20 at halftime before Brookville scored the first two touchdowns of the second half on a 70-yard run by Joe Galbraith in the third quarter and the long pass to Ross in the fourth.

Morgan scored the game’s first touchdown for Clearfield on a 24-yard run in the first quarter before Brookville took a 14-7 lead at the end of the quarter on a 10-yard pass from Heschke to Ross and a 35-yard pass from Ross to Brett Mohney.

Clearfield tied the score on a 5-yard run by Morgan early in the second quarter before Brookville went back ahead 20-14 on a 3-yard run by Heschke.

The Bisons took the halftime lead on a 6-yard scoring run by Morgan with 45 seconds left before the half and a 32-yard field goal by Kyle Kline with seven seconds left.

Adam Jury had a huge night for Clearfield catching nine passes for 130 yards, running once for six yards and going 1-for-1 passing for 66 yards and a touchdown. He also recovered a fumble. Morgan scored his four touchdowns on 19 carries for 82 yards, while Tyler Kirkwood had five carries for 38. Andrew Janocko was 14-for-22 passing for 150 yards. Hipps had the one catch for 66 yards and the score.

Galbraith led Brookville, which ran for 291 yards, with 10 carries for 117 yards and the touchdown. Max Kutz added 14 carries for 81 yards and Heschke 11 carries for 71 yards and the score. Heschke was 3-for-5 for 63 yards passing and one touchdown with Ross catching three passes for 63 yards and two touchdowns. Ross also ran once for nine yards and was 1-for-1 passing for 35 yards and a score.

COUDERSPORT 62, OTTO-ELDRED 12

COUDERSPORT – Chris Cavallari ran 22 times for 227 yards and four touchdowns to lead Coudersport (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML North) to a 62-12 win over visiting Otto-Eldred (0-2, 0-2) Friday night.

Cavallari scored on touchdown runs of 2, 51, 44 and 3 yards, while Boomer Wetzel was 4-for-9 passing for 63 yards, a 10-yard touchdown pass and one interception.

Travis Bair was 11-for-28 passing for 168 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions for Otto-Eldred, with Eric Freer catching two passes for 50 yards. Kurtis Breese had four grabs for 38 yards and a touchdown, and Chad Bova had three catches for 37 yards and eight carries for 30 yards.

Bova had an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for the other Otto score. 

JOHNSONBURG 25, KANE 6

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg broke a 6-6 halftime tie with 19 unanswered second-half points to get a 25-6 win over visiting Kane.

Judd Zilcosky scored two touchdowns in the second half for the Rams (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML South), while Calvin Grumley threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third in the game.

Johnsonburg struck first on a 76-yard pass from Grumley to John Yonker in the first quarter before Kane (1-1, 1-1) tied the game on a 59-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Kenny Kane to Matt Mix late in the opening quarter.

A 37-yard pass from Grumley to Zilcosky put the Rams ahead for good midway through the third quarter before Grumley scored on a 10-yard run to make it 18-6 at the end of three quarters. Zilcosky then finished the scoring with a 2-yard run early in the fourth.

Kane hurt itself with turnovers giving the ball away seven times (5 interceptions, 2 lost fumbles). Johnsonburg gave the ball away three times, all on interceptions.

Grumley was 8-for-17 passing for 196 yards, two touchdowns and the three picks while running five times for 13 yards and two scores. Yonker had three catches for 90 yards, Zilcosky had three grabs for 73 yards and four carries for three and Jesse Dennis had three catches for 36 yards and had four carries for six. Mark Myers added 10 carries for 49 yards.

Dustin Moran ran 16 times for 44 yards, while Matt Mix had 11 totes for 34 yards for Kane. Kenny Kane was 4-for-13 passing for 77 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions. Mix had one catch, while D.J. Horton had two for 15.

Grumley had three of the interceptions and a sack on defense for Johnsonburg.

Kane had to play without starting quarterback Zach Anderson, who according to the Kane Republican broke his arm in last week’s win over Sheffield.

MONITEAU 12, ST. MARYS 7

WEST SUNBURY – Moniteau rallied for a 7-0 halftime deficit to beat St. Marys 12-7 Friday night at Moniteau.

St. Marys (0-2) scored on a 29-yard pass from Bryan Dempsey to Kurt Baumgratz midway through the second quarter.

Moniteau (2-0) got to within four on a 24-yard Adam Cousins' field goal early in the second half, Cousins’ second field goal in as many games. Cousins then scored on a 1-yard run late in the third quarter to give the Warriors a 10-7 lead.

Moniteau’s last score came on a safety with 1:11 left.

St. Marys outgained Moniteau 142-97 with neither team getting anything going on the ground. St. Marys ran 43 times for 49 yards and Moniteau 26 times for 77 yards.

Cousins led Moniteau with seven carries for 32 yards, while Josh Loss had 12 for 26 and was 2-for-9 passing for 20 yards and two picks. He also had an interception on defense.

Todd Schatz led St. Marys with 13 carries for 48 yards and four catches for 30 yards. Dempsey was 8-for-14 passing for 93 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

BROCKWAY 12, RIDGWAY 0

BROCKWAY – Anthony Varischetti ran for two touchdowns in the first half to lead Brockway (1-1 overall, 1-1 AML South) to a 12-0 win over Ridgway (1-1, 1-1). No other details have been reported. Please check back later for more on this game.

Varischetti scored on runs of 21 and 22 yards and finished the night with 14 carries for 64 yards while going 4-for-9 passing for 65 yards. Dillon Park added 11 carries for 74 yards, while Aaron Shaffer had three catches for 48 yards.

Brockway’s defense held Ridgway to 144 yards of total offense including 75 yards rushing on 33 carries.

Andy Aiello led the Elkers with five carries for 38 yards, while Nick Dickant was 8-for-17 passing for 69 yards and an interception.

CAMERON COUNTY 51, SMETHPORT 7

SMETHPORT – Cash Grimone rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns to lead Cameron County (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML North) to a 51-7 thrashing of Smethport (0-2, 0-2) Friday night in Smethport.

The Raiders ran 387 yards on the night and outgained Smethport 466-99.

Quarterback Jordan Crane added two touchdown passes for Cameron, which has beaten Smethport in back-to-back years for the first time since 1981-82. John Malizia added two touchdowns – one running, one receiving – while running three times for 45 yards and catching one pass for seven yards. The Red Raiders also got nine carries and 72 yards from Nick Malize and three carries for 30 yards and a score from Cameron Clingan. Abram Zoschg caught one pass for 40 yards and a score, while Joey Songer had two catches for 32 yards.

Smethport’s lone touchdown came on a 1-yard run by Preston Birtcil, who had three carries for 47 yards. Joel Kohler added two catches for 25 yards.

CURWENSVILLE 14, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 12

ST. MARYS – Nick Sipes ran for 26 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns to lead Curwensville (1-1 overall, 1-1 AML South) to a 14-12 win at Elk County Catholic (1-1, 1-1) Friday night.

Sipes scored two first half touchdowns to lead the Golden Tide to a 14-0 lead with 9:33 left in the first half.

But ECC cut the deficit to 14-6 at halftime on a 23-yard pass from Andy Herbstritt to Eric Mastrogiacomo.

The Crusaders then scored on a 68-yard run by Mastrogiacomo with 1:56 left in the third quarter, but Curwensville stopped the 2-point conversion.

With the 120 yards and two touchdowns, Sipes now has 4,228 career rushing yards and 57 touchdowns. He is tied with Brockway’s Aaron Cantafio for fourth all-time in D9 in touchdowns, and he is 221 yards behind his cousin and Clarion graduate Kyle Cathcart for third all-time in D9 history in rushing. He has also moved to within 466 yards of Cantafio’s all-time District 9 rushing record of 4,694 yards.

Brandon Hess added 16 carries for 64 yards for Curwensville and three catches for 43 yards, while Shawn Sopic was 6-for-10 passing for 93 yards while adding 10 carries for 23 yards. He also had an interception on defense. Jesse Hoover had three catches for 50 yards.

Mastrogiacomo led ECC with nine carries for 77 yards and four catches for 40 yards, while Herbstritt was 11-for-23 passing for 113 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Brad Meholic had two catches for 32 yards.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 14, A-C VALLEY 6

STRATTANVILLE – Harry Cooper turned in his first career 100-yard rushing game to lead Clarion-Limestone (1-1 overall, 1-1 KSAC) to a 14-6 win over visiting A-C Valley (0-2, 0-2) Friday night.

Cooper ran 17 times for 115 yards and a touchdown, while Kyle Jones (4 carries, 68 yards), who later left the game with an injury, also scored for the Lions.

Mike Himes returned a blocked field goal 80 yards for a touchdown for A-C Valley.

Himes had a big night for the Falcons rushing for 100 yards on 19 carries, catching four passes for 63 yards, completing a pass for 31 yards and returning two punts for 76 yards as well as the blocked field goal for a touchdown.

Dan Miller was 6-for-15 passing for 62 yards for C-L, while Brad Rembold was 4-for-13 passing for 63 yards and two interceptions for A-C Valley.
