CURWENSVILLE – Curwensville senior running back Nick Sipes is on the cusp of District 9 football
history.
Sipes is 98 yards shy of tying Brockway’s Aaron Cantafio as the all-time leading rusher in District 9 history. Cantafio, whose career came to a close in 2001, has 4,694 yards. Sipes has 4,596 yards. The senior gets his first chance at tying the record when Curwensville (3-1) travels to Johnsonburg (4-0) in an AML South showdown Friday night (7 p.m.). Sipes has 329 career rushing yards vs. the Rams including 107 in a 22-16 loss last season. This season, Sipes is the third leading rusher in District 9 with 116 carries for 620 yards and nine touchdowns. Sipes was the leading rusher in District 9 last year rushing 242 times for 1,857 yards and 30 touchdowns. In 2004, he ranked third in District 9 in rushing with 190 carries for 1,772 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also ran 61 times for 347 yards and two scores as a freshman. His 62 career touchdowns ranks third in District 9 history behind Clearfield’s Dave Richards (80) and Clarion’s Kyle Cathcart (73). Cathcart, who ranks fourth in D9 history in rushing with 4,449 yards, is Sipes’ cousin giving the family two of District 9’s four 4,000-yard rushers and two of the top three touchdown leaders. Sipes’ older brother Nate was also a prolific runner for Curwensville rushing for 3,227 yards, which ranks 14th in District 9 history SIPES THROUGH THE YEARS
