COUDY-CAMERON SHOWDOWN HIGHLIGHTS WEEK THREE |
WEEK 3 PREVIEW - Sept. 15-16, 2006 |
By Rich Rhoades
It’s been a little over four years since Coudersport lost a game to an Allegheny Mountain League North Division foe. Cameron County hasn’t beaten the Falcons since 1995, which preceded the current eight-game losing streak. Both 2-0 teams clash Friday night in Emporium in one of 13 games that night involving District 9 teams this week. One game is scheduled Saturday afternoon. The resurgent Red Raiders, off to a 2-0 start, will face a huge test in Coudersport, the defending AML and District 9 Class A champions. The Falcons are coming off a 62-12 rout of Otto-Eldred, their 22nd straight win against an AML North opponent. Coudersport opened the season with a 20-12 win at Curwensville in a rematch of last year’s AML Championship game. In both wins, running back Chris Cavallari has led the way. He’s rushed for 377 yards and six touchdowns. Quarterback Boomer Wetzel has passed for 207 yards. Cameron County, meanwhile has had a balanced effort as five different running backs have scored touchdowns. Cash Grimone has rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns. All three TDs and 152 yards came in last week’s 51-6 win over Smethport. The winner of this game will likely win the AML North. Coudersport is looking for its fifth straight division title. Cameron County, with only winning season since its 12-1 AML and district championship season of 1999, last beat Coudersport 7-0 in 1995. In other games this week: DISTRICT 9 LEAGUE Two league games are on the schedule Friday as Brookville (1-1) travels to DuBois (0-2) and Punxsutawney (1-1) hosts Bradford (2-0). The Raiders will try to bounce back from a difficult 39-35 loss to Clearfield. Brookville led 35-24 with less than seven minutes left, but the Bisons rallied for the win. Both Max Kutz (207 yards 1 TD) and Joe Galbraith (210 yards, 2 TDs) are averaging over 100 yards rushing per game and will be the primary weapons for the Raiders at E.J. Mansell Stadium. DuBois, meanwhile, dropped a 21-20 decision to Punxsutawney. The Beavers will be playing without running back Mark Malacarne, who will miss at least a couple more weeks with a knee injury. At 0-2, the Beavers are desperate for a win on a schedule that has some difficult assignments ahead. Quarterback James Conway stepped up and rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns against the Chucks. The Bradford Owls have rushed for 801 yards in their first two wins, including 296 in last week’s 38-0 rout of Olean, N.Y. Three backs — Taylor O’Brien (220), E.J. Moore (218) and Nick Johnson (162) — have impressive numbers. Quarterback Ben Walter, who didn’t attempt a pass in their season-opener against Clearfield, completed 7 of 7 passes for 113 yards last week and is also a big playmaker for the Owls. Can the Chucks make it two in a row? First things first. Last week’s win broke a 14-game losing streak and notched second-year head coach Blake Moilan his first win at Punxsutawney. Running back Mike Smiley (237 yards, 1 TD) and quarterback Zach Smith (142 yards, 2 TDs) lead the way. KEYSTONE SERVES NOTICE IN THE KSAC Clarion was a consensus pick to win the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference. A coaches' poll confirmed it, so last week’s 14-7 loss to visiting Keystone was definitely an upset. Still, the win puts Keystone into solid contention in the KSAC race. The Panthers, who took advantage of four Bobcats turnovers, will try to continue their momentum with a home game against Union (1-1). Keystone is averaging only 165 yards of offense per game, led by running back Derek Swartfager (169 yards, 1 TD) and quarterback Ben Black (128 yards). Union, 49-20 losers to Redbank Valley, is led by running back Nate Boltz (108 yards). Redbank Valley shut out Keystone 13-0 in the season opener. If the Knights can pull off the upset, they could find themselves in playoff contention in a year in which they broke a 30-game losing streak. In other KSAC games, unbeaten Karns City (2-0), coming off its non-conference overtime win over Hickory, hosts Clarion-Limestone (1-1) while Moniteau will try to make it 3-0 with a home game against A-C Valley (0-2). ALLEGHENY MOUNTAIN LEAGUE While Coudersport and Cameron County clash in the North Division, Brockway (1-1) travels to Curwensville (1-1) in what could be an interesting game in the South Division race. Both teams bounced back from season-opening losses as the Rovers blanked Ridgway 12-0 and Curwensville got by Elk County Catholic 14-12. The Rovers’ Anthony Varischetti (69 yards, 2 TDs) and Dillon Park (147 yards, 1 TD) and the Golden Tide’s Nick Sipes (252 yards, 4 TDs) and Shawn Sopic (142 yards passing) are players to watch. It’s the 102nd meeting between Johnsonburg and Ridgway. The 1-1 Elkers try to shake off a 12-0 loss to Brockway, hosting a 2-0 Rams squad. In other AML games, Sheffield (0-2) visits Otto-Eldred (0-2) and Kane (1-1) hosts Elk County Catholic (1-1). Saturday, Smethport (0-2) travels to Port Allegany (1-1). NON-CONFERENCE At 2-0 in the KSAC, the Redbank Valley Bulldogs will take a break from the conference schedule to play 0-2 Schenley from the Pittsburgh City League. If it were basketball, this would be one the Bulldogs probably wouldn’t want to schedule. That may not be the case, however, in football. Schenley is 0-2, coming off a 27-0 loss to Brashear last week. Schenley is a Class AAAA school. The Bulldogs have some solid numbers as running back Alex has 337 yards rushing and three TDs. Quarterback Jake Smith has been a double threat, passing for 202 yards and four TDs while running for 153 yards and two TDs. Schenley has lost to District 10 Fairview (14-2) and 2005 City League runner-up Brashear (27-0) and has struggled on offense gaining 283 in two weeks including 72 in last week’s loss to Brashear. But the Spartans have been equally tough on defense allowing 347 yards in two games. Fumbles hurt them last week as they lost the handle five times with Brashear recovering three of them. Eric Carter (5 of 16, 101 yards vs. Fairview) is the quarterback, while Jamar Cromwell 911 carries, 75 yards vs. Fairview) is the top back. Clearfield (1-1) hosts Indian Valley (1-1), which is coming off a lopsided win over Bishop Guilfoyle after losing its season opener to West Perry. Don’t be surprised to see a shoot-out. The Bisons have allowed 91 points and 894 yards of offense in two games, but they have their own arsenal in quarterback Andrew Janocko (395 yards, 4 TDs), tight end Adam Jury (13 catches, 232 yards) and running back Isiah Morgan (179 yards, 5 TDs). In the other non-conference game, Clarion (1-1) travels to St. Marys (0-2). The Bobcats will try to shake off their loss to Keystone while the Dutch gun for their first win. Clarion has pounded the ball on the ground in the early going racking up 533 yards in two games led by 193 from Brad Rapp. The Dutch offense hasn’t gotten going yet averaging 151.5 yards per game including 77 on the ground. |
