SIX UNBEATENS TO BE PUT TO THE TEST IN WEEK 5 |
WEEK 5 PREVIEW - Sept. 29-30, 2006 |
By Rich Rhoades
All six unbeaten District 9 football teams survived last week’s challenges, but that won’t happen in Week 5. In one of the games of the week, a pair of Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference 4-0 teams clash when Karns City hosts Redbank Valley Friday night. In another key KSAC game, 4-0 Moniteau hosts 2-2 Keystone. Both unbeaten Allegheny Mountain League squads have home games. Johnsonburg entertains 3-1 Curwensville in what could determine the AML South Division champion. The Rams beat the Golden Tide last year in Curwensville. The 4-0 Coudersport Falcons take on 2-2 Port Allegany. In the District 9 League, the undefeated Bradford Owls travel to winless St. Marys. Here’s a closer look at this week’s action: KSAC SHOWDOWNS — Three of the district’s undefeated teams sit atop the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference. That number will be cut down by at least one after this week. Coming off a big win over Clarion last week, Redbank Valley visits Karns City. It could be a shoot-out as Redbank Valley and Karns City rank second and third in the district in points per game. The Bulldogs feature sophomore running back Alex Bladel and junior quarterback Jake Smith. Bladel’s 630 yards rank second in the district. Smith has rushed for 311 yards and passed for 393 yards. Karns City doesn’t have the gaudy individual numbers like Redbank Valley, but the Gremlins feature running back Roy Beham (266 yards) and quarterback Matt Endlish, who has passed for 380 yards and three touchdowns. The teams share one common opponent in Keystone. Karns City is coming off a 26-21 win over the Panthers last week while Redbank Valley shut them out 13-0 in Week 1. Karns City has won seven of the last 10 meetings with Redbank Valley, including a 29-25 win last year. The Bulldogs’ last wins over the Gremlins came in 2004 when they beat Karns City twice, once in the playoffs. Call this the first test of the year for unbeaten Moniteau as the Warriors host Keystone (2-2) in West Sunbury. The Warriors’ four wins have come against opponents with a combined two wins. Still, the Warriors have to be at least considered a strong contender in not only the KSAC but also the Class AA playoffs. Senior playmaker Adam Cousins leads the way. He’s rushed for 270 yards and has returned a punt and kick for touchdowns to go along with two field goals. Sophomore Tyler Armagost has emerged as a talented quarterback, passing for 297 yards and four touchdowns while completing 63 percent of his passes. Keystone, coming off a close loss to Karns City, is led by running back Derek Swartfager (335 yards) and quarterback Ben Black (406 yards). In the other KSAC game Friday, Clarion (2-2) hosts Union (1-3). RAMS AND TIDE TANGLE FOR AML SOUTH LEAD — Last year, Johnsonburg stopped Curwensville’s 14-game regular season winning streak. This year, the shoe is on the other foot. The unbeaten Rams host Curwensville (3-1) in what could decide who wins the AML South Division title. Johnsonburg rallied from a halftime deficit to beat the Golden Tide a year ago, 22-16. Despite the win, the Rams couldn’t win the division because of two overtime losses to Brockway and Kane. Quarterback Calvin Grumley lead the Rams. The do-it-all senior has passed for 529 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 198 yards and six touchdowns. He’s not the only one as Jesse Dennis has rushed for 247 yards and caught 14 passes for 217 yards. He and Grumley have had a hand in 16 of the team’s 19 touchdowns. Curwensville features Nick Sipes, who ranks third in the district with 620 yards rushing and nine touchdowns. Quarterback Shawn Sopic has rushed for 253 yards and thrown for 236 yards. Sipes could become the all-time leading rusher in District 9 this week needing 99 yards to pass Brockway’s Aaron Cantafio (See related story). In the other Friday AML games, Ridgway (2-2) visits Kane (2-2), Cameron County (2-2) tries to rebound from two straight losses to Curwensville and Coudersport with a home game against Otto-Eldred (1-3) and either Smethport or Sheffield will notch their first win when the Hubbers host the Wolverines in a match-up of winless squads. Saturday night in the AML, Brockway heads to Elk County Catholic in what should be a good game between 2-2 teams. NON-CONFERENCE — In their three wins since being routed by Bradford, the Clearfield Bisons (3-1) have accomplished each with a come-from-behind effort. The Bisons don’t want that scenario again when they travel to winless Lewistown in a Mountain Athletic Conference-Seven Mountains Division game. DuBois (0-4) may have star running back Mark Malacarne back when it hosts Kittanning (3-1) in what will be the first regular-season contest between previously annual scrimmage opponents. In another MAC game, Huntingdon (3-1) travels to Punxsutawney (1-3). C-L FORFEITING AGAIN — One week after deciding not to head to Erie County to play North East in a non-conference game against the Grape Pickers of District 10, Clarion-Limestone will forgo its second straight game and forfeit to Brookville in a game scheduled at C-L this Friday. Injuries and an incident that led to two regulars being declared ineligible led to the school to make the decision to forfeit again. "We have a lot of freshmen playing and we were concerned about the safety aspect of freshmen playing in positions that they hadn’t before and that leading to additional injuries," C-L athletic director Rick Beggs said in a DuBois Courier-Express story in Tuesday’s edition. "We hope to play next week. We have to move some kids around and get them ready to play and we just didn’t feel they’d be ready in time." That left Brookville with an open date. The Raiders, according to the story, contacted A-C Valley, another KSAC team with a bye week, but the Falcons weren’t interested in playing the now 4-1 Raiders. That’ll give the Raiders an off week to prepare for a trip to unbeaten Bradford Oct. 6. |
