CLARION – It took Clarion all of 8:12 to seal its first win of the season, a 40-0 victory over visiting A-C Valley, Friday night at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium.

The Bobcats (1-0) scored five times in the first 8:12 to take a 33-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the score would have undoubtedly been worse if Clarion head coach Larry Wiser hadn’t pulled his starting offense following an A-C Valley fumble at the Falcon 42 with 3:34 left. Those starters saw only brief action the rest of the night – two short stints really – as the Bobcats second and third teams played out the majority of the game.

“I thought we handled it pretty well tonight,” Wiser said. “We got the second group in there and got them some work. The bottom line is A-C Valley was missing some guys tonight, and there’s a point where we aren’t out to embarrass anybody or anything like that.”

While the second group saw most of the action, it was the first team that did most of the damage scoring all six of Clarion’s scores and needing a combined total of 5:35 seconds to score the six touchdowns. None of Clarion’s drives lasted more than 1:32 and three of them took under a minute including a 7-second “drive” midway through the first quarter.

Senior James Seidle, making his first start at running back after being a wide receiver most of his career, ran five times for 109 yards and three touchdowns including an 85-yard draw.

“We got him outside on a lot of stuff,” Wiser said. “He broke a draw. Jimmy’s fast. He’s an outstanding back. It’s just a matter of seeing how he takes some punishment.”

Jon Kemmer added 75 yards on just three carries, while sophomore Bubba Rue had 68 yards and his first varsity touchdown on 13 totes. In all, Clarion rushed for 258 yards out rushing A-C Valley 258 to negative 24 and outgained the Falcons 325 yards to one.

Jake Fleeger chipped in with two touchdown catches from senior quarterback Adam Bevevino, who was 6-for-9 for 67 yards and the two scores, including a 35-yard scoring strike one play after an A-C Valley fumble.

A-C Valley, which lost its 14th straight game, was hurt by the loss of senior quarterback Brad Rembold, who was lost in the preseason for part of the season after having his appendix removed. Without Rembold, and running a new Wing-T offense installed by first-year head coach Gary Pinkerton the Falcons didn’t get a first down until there was a 1:03 left in the third quarter.

“Losing Brad is a big thing,” Pinkerton said. “Not only is he a decent quarterback, he is a team leader and a middle linebacker. You lose a lot. I’m not saying that is the reason we lost. What happened is what happened. Everything would have had to have gone our way for us to be in this game. There are just a lot of things that have to change. There are positives, but there are a lot of negative. We will just keep working. Our goal has always been to build a more competitive team.”

NOTES – The win was Wiser’s 125th as Clarion’s head coach. This is his 20th season … Kevin Grejda came away with two turnovers for the Bobcats intercepting a pass in the first quarter and also recovering a fumble … Luke Walker and Michael Orrvick shared the quarterbacking duties for A-C Valley with Walker going 6-for-12 for 25 yards and an interception. He teamed up with Mike Himes for the Falcons longest play, a 29-yard screen pass in the third quarter that led to A-C Valley’s first first down. It was one of just two first downs for the Falcons on the night. A-C Valley actually held the ball for 3:01 more than Clarion thanks in large part to the running clock of the Mercy Rule in the first half … Both teams return to action next Friday. A-C Valley hosts C-L, while Clarion is at Keystone in a key early-season KSAC game … It was the ninth straight win for Clarion over A-C Valley including the last three by a combined score of 164-6. The Bobcats own a 30-4 all-time mark vs. the Falcons who have not beaten the Bobcats since 1998.
