COUDERSPORT 48, CURWENSVILLE 0

Aug. 31, 2007

COUDERSPORT – Two things can be taken from Coudersport’s 48-0 whitewashing of visiting Curwensville Friday night.

One – The Falcons look very capable of becoming the first District 9 Class A team to win three consecutive District 9 titles.

Two – There might be a changing of the guard in the AML South unless the three-time defending southern champion Golden Tide grow up in a hurry.

Coudersport dominated Curwensville, which it has now beaten six straight times over the past three seasons including in each of the past two AML and District 9 Class A title games, in almost every aspect of the game.

The Falcons outgained the young Tide 446 yards to 95 including 267 yards to 52 on the ground. It was Curwensville’s worst loss in head coach Andy Evanko’s eight seasons and the first time the Tide have been shutout since a 7-0 loss to Sharpsville Nov. 18, 2000, in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs. The last time Curwensville lost by 48 or more points was in 1992 when Mt. Union beat the Tide 64-6 while also losing to Bald Eagle Nittany  48-0 the same season.

Coudersport scored seven of the 10 times it had the football and also had a punt return for a touchdown called back by a penalty. The Falcons also limited Curwensville to 24 second-half yards on just 15 second-half plays, and 21 of those yards came on a run by quarterback David Kalgren, who finished the night with six carries for a team-high 35 yards. He was also 2-for-11 passing for 43 yards and two picks and recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass on defense.

Senior quarterback Boomer Wetzel, who has been at the helm for both of the Falcons D9 titles, was 6-for-12 for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Brett Whitman hauled in three of those aerials for 98 yards and score. Kyle Gee led the Coudy rushing attack with 14 carries for 74 yards and three touchdowns.
