DUKE CENTER – Elk County Catholic scored 19 unanswered first quarter points on its way to a 25-0 win at Otto-Eldred Friday night.

It was the fourth time in the past 11 games that the Terrors (0-1) have been shutout and the second straight season ECC has turned the trick – the Crusaders (1-0) beat Otto 26-0 in last season’s opener.

ECC’s defense provided the early momentum, as Glen Eschbach recovered an Otto-Eldred fumble on the second play from scrimmage at the Terror 29-yard line. Kyle Garner then hit Nick Brennen on a diving reception at the 1-yard line on ECC’s first offensive play of the season. Eric Mastrogiacomo took over from there scoring on the next play making it 7-0.

Garner’s next two passes then found the end zone, as he hit Kody Shipe with a 64-yard scoring toss and Brennen with a 32-yard scoring strike to make it 19-0.

Tom Marconi then added an 11-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter to finish off the scoring.

ECC’s defense then preserved the shutout thanks to a Pat Cotter fumble recovery and interceptions by Mastrogiacomo and Brennen in the fourth quarter. The Crusader defense spent the majority of the second with their back against the wall, as Otto won the time of possession and field-position battles. But that defense refused to fold holding off quarterback Travis Bair and the Terror offense including twice on first-and-goal situations from the 1- and 9-yard lines.

Garner was 6-for-13 for 170 yards and two scores in his debut with Brennen catching two passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. Brennen also was 1-for-1 passing for 23 yards. Mastrogiacomo ran 14 times for 49 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 48 yards.

Otto-Eldred stats are pending.
