Karns City – Karns City scored twice in the final four minutes to erase a four-point deficit and get a 23-13 season-opening win over visiting St. Marys Friday night.

“This was not a pretty game tonight,” Karns City head coach Ed Conto said. “I give a lot of credit to our kids tonight to hand in there and pulling it out in the end.”

The Gremlins trailed 7-3 entering the fourth quarter before taking a 9-7 lead with 8:08 left on a 1-yard scoring run by Marcus LaVan.

But St. Marys answered right back recovering a fumble at the Gremlin 12-yard line that led to a 1-yard scoring run by James Swanson with 4:51 left to put the Dutch back ahead 13-9.

Karns City answered going 55 yards in five plays to take a 16-13 lead on a 1-yard Josh Stimac run with 3:59 left.

“I told the kids just hand in there (following the St. Marys score),” Conto said. “There was a lot of time left, and they responded.”

Then, as it did so many times last season, Karns City’s defense sealed the deal when Devin Collins returned a fumble 12 yards on St. Marys’ next possession with 2:21 left.

“We had our chances tonight,” St. Marys head coach Joe Schlimm said. “We committed too many mistakes in key parts of the game.”

St. Marys scored first when Todd Schatz grabbed a 47-yard pass from Swanson with 6:51 left in the first half before Matt McConnell’s 32-yard field goal with 3:55 remaining in the half made it 7-3 St. Marys at halftime.

Stimac had solid debut as the starting quarterback going 10-for-20 for 193 yards while also running for the score. Josh Callender had two catches for 97 yards, while Stephon Conto added three grabs for 48 yards. Conto also ran three times for 17 yards, while Callender had two carries for seven yards.

Swanson was going 5-for-9 for 102 yards, a touchdown and an interception while also running for a score in his starting debut. Schatz had two catches for 58 yards and the score while running seven times for 21yards, and Jeremy Williams two grabs for 27 yards.

St. Marys hosts Moniteau next week, while Karns City is at Hickory.
