KARNS CITY 42, KEYSTONE 14

Sept. 21, 2007

KARNS CITY – The hype for the Karns City-Keystone game turned out to be a lot better than the game itself.

Karns City used a total team effort to stay unbeaten with a 42-14 demolishing of Keystone that quite possibly leaves no doubt as to who the top team in the KSAC is this season.

The Gremlins ran all over the Panthers racking up 472 yards of offense including 414 on the ground but remarkably did not have a 100-yard rusher.

Instead, Karns City (4-0 overall, 2-0 KSAC, winners of 15 straight KSAC games, had 10 different players carry the football including three players who were over 80 yards.

Brett Green led the way with seven totes for 95 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Anthony Stimac had seven carries for 92 yards and two touchdowns.  He was also 4-for-11 passing for 53 yards while throwing two interceptions. Josh Stimac added three carries for 80 yards and was 1-for-1 passing for five yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile, the Gremlins defense shutdown Keystone’s offense limiting the Panthers to 147 total yards including just 66 passing.

Karns City wasted little time taking control of the game scoring twice in a 4-minute span in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead.

The Gremlins took the opening kickoff and marched 68 yards in eight plays scoring on a 16-yard Stimac run to go ahead 7-0.

Keystone was able to move out to the Karns City 41 on its first possession before the drive was stopped, but a 31-yard Derek Swartfager punt backed the Gremlin up at their own 10-yard line.

No problem.

Josh Stimac got Karns City out of the hole with a 55-yard run to the Keystone 35. Then Anthony Stimac hit Matt McConnell with a 30-yard pass to the 5-yard line before Josh Stimac threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Mike McConnell making it 14-0 with 4:20 left in the opening quarter.

It looked like Keystone would get back in the game when Swartfager returned a Mike McConnell punt 47 yards to the Karns City 40 yard line, and Ben Black hit Kyle Rhoads with a pass to the Gremlin 30. But Swartfager fumbled the ball back to the Gremlin at the Karns City 28 on the next play.

But a few plays later, Swartfager returned the favor picking off an Anthony Stimac pass at the Karns City 26 and returning it to the 13. He then caught a 13-yard scoring strike from Black to cut the lead to 14-7 with 7:25 left in the first half.

Keystone then got the ball back following a punt but couldn’t pick up a first down and was forced to punt itself.

That turned into point for Karns City when Josh Callender returned Swartfager’s boot 66 yards for a touchdown giving Karns City a 21-7 lead at halftime.

Keystone appeared set to answer that on its first drive of the second half after Ben Marchand’s 68-yard kickoff return set the Panthers up at the Karns City 18. But Black was intercepted by Anthony Stimac at the Karns City 1-yard line, and the Gremlins proceeded to go 99 yards in seven plays to put away the game.

Brett Green capped the drive, which featured five double-digit runs and a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Keystone, with a 5-yard run.

A 48-yard interception return by Mike Switzer early in the fourth quarter got the Panthers back within 14 at 28-14, but Antony Stimac answered with a 55-yard run, and Aaron Markle closed out the scoring with a 6-yard run for the Gremlins.
