WEST SHAMOKIN 20, A-C VALLEY 8

Sept. 21, 2007

By Justin Skiba

NuMINE – West Shamokin rushed for 259 yards on its way to a 20-8 non-conference win over A-C Valley Friday night.

Leading the way for West Shamokin (2-2) was Dave Ferringer who ran for 97 yards on 22 carries.  Cale Gibson chipped in 58 yards and three touchdowns.

“We had our chances tonight,” A-C Valley head coach Gary Pinkerton said. “We just made too many mistakes in key parts of the game.”

Cale Gibson opened the scoring late in the first quarter to give West Shamokin a 7-0 lead.

A-C Valley (0-4) answered right back two minutes later on 3-play, 70-yard drive capped off by a Mike Himes 68-yard touchdown run.  The two point conversion was good and A-C Valley lead 8-7 after one quarter. Himes led the way for the Falcons with seven carries for 114 yards and one touchdown.

“Mike had a big night tonight,” Pinkerton said. “He is a great competitor, and he gives it all each night.”

The score remained 8-7 Falcons until midway through the second quarter when Gibson scored his second touchdown of the night giving the Wolves a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

A-C Valley had chances to get back into the game but was guilty of five turnovers (three interceptions, two fumbles).

The Falcons did get some good news, as senior quarterback Brad Rembold, a Cranberry High School student, played for the first time this season. Rembold, who missed the first three games after having his appendix out, was 8 of 16 passing for 113 yards and three interceptions.

A-C Valley, which has lost 17 straight, is back in action at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Apollo-Ridge.

NOTES – West Shamokin is 2-2 for the first time since becoming West Shamokin in 2000. West Shamokin was formed by the merger of Shannock Valley and Dayton high schools. The two teams co-opted in football in the years leading up to the merger playing as Shannock Valley. While West Shamokin has never had a winning season, Shannock Valley’s last winning campaign came in 1994 when it went 6-2-1. West Shamokin/Shannock Valley was a member of the Little 12 and then the KSAC from 1972 to 2003 before joining a WPIAL conference in 2004 (It had always been a WPIAL team playing in a District 9 league).

AC Valley will host Apollo-Ridge next Friday at 7.
