Nick Johnson set the tone for Bradford with an 87-yard kickoff return for a TD

Dan McMurtrie scored a rushing TD for the Owls

BRADFORD – Two long first quarter kick returns by Nick Johnson helped Bradford jump out to a 14-0 lead at the end of one quarter on its way to a 31-12 win over St. Marys in front of a homecoming crowd at Bradford’s Parkway Field Friday night.

Johnson returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and then returned a punt 41 yards late in the quarter giving the Owls (4-0 overall, 2-0 D9 League) the ball at the St. Marys 22. That set up a 6-yard scoring run by Dan McMurtrie.

Johnson then made it 21-0 Owls with a 50-yard scoring run late in the first half.

Bradford then made it 28-0 late in the third quarter thanks to another special teams mistake by St. Marys (3-2, 1-1).

The Owls tried a 47-yard field from Cody Nuzzo, but Nuzzo slipped on the kick try. St. Marys, however, roughed Nuzzo giving Bradford a first down at the Dutch 14-yard line.

That led to a 2-yard scoring by quarterback Tyler Grandy, subbing again for the injured Ben Walter with 10 seconds left in the quarter.

St. Marys finally got on the scoreboard when James Swanson hit Todd Schatz with a 43-yard screen pass for a touchdown making it 28-6 with 8:22 left in the game.

Bradford, though, salted the game away with a 10-play, 68-yard drive that ended with a 27-yard field goal by Nuzzo making it 31-6.

St. Marys did get a final score on a 72-yard run by Schatz.

In addition to his two touchdowns, Johnson had 11 carries for 91 yards, one catch for 12 yards and 10 tackles. Taylor O'Brien added 14 carries for 79 yards and had 10 tackles on defense, while McMurtrie chipped in with nine carries for 59 yards and the score.

Johnson unofficially finished with 87 yards rushing while Taylor O’Brien had 76 and McMurtrie 60.

Schatz had 11 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown to lead St. Marys while also catching two passes for 44 yards and the touchdown. Swanson was 6-for-10 passing for 79 yards and a score.

NOTES – Mike Johnson and Rob Pire led Bradford’s defense with 11 tackles… Bradford returns to action Friday at Brookville and can clinch at least a share of the final D9 League title with a win … St. Marys will try to get back on the winning track when it travels to DuBois Friday.
