BROCKWAY – Kyle Garner threw for 175 yards and five touchdowns and also ran for a score to lead Elk County Catholic to a 47-14 thrashing of Brockway in a key AML South match-up Friday night in Brockway.

All five of Garner’s scoring passes came in the first half and more than doubled his touchdown output for the season. The senior, who was 6-for-9 passing while also throwing an interception, had entered the game completing just 40 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and eight picks.

But with Brockway stacking the line intent to shut down ECC’s Eric Mastrogiacomo, who entered the game the second-leading rusher in District 9 (504 yards, 7 TDs) Garner shined.

He hit Nick Brennen with scoring tosses of 33 and 65 yards and Matt Bauer with a 24-yard scoring strike in the first quarter giving ECC a 21-7 lead at the end of the quarter.

Garner, who also ran six times for 13 yards, then scored on a 1-yard run early in the second quarter making it 27-7 before Brockway got back within 13 on a 1-yard run by Armando Fortunato.

But Garner hit Brennen, who ended the night with four catches for 138 yards and three scores, with scoring passes of 15 and 25 yards in a span of 27 seconds late in the quarter (1:14 and 0:47) to make it 39-14 Crusaders at the half.

Mastrogiacomo, who carried 11 times for 119 yards, then scored on a 55-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter to close out the scoring.

Matt Pentz, coming off a 5-touchdown performance last week against Smethport, struggled against ECC going 5-for-20 for 77 yards and five interceptions including one by Mastrogiacomo.

Brockway’s running game was no better gaining just 59 yards on 28 carries, and the Rovers were outgained 400 yards to 136.

NOTES – It was the second straight win for ECC over Brockway after the Rovers had won three straight and six of the first seven since joining the AML in 1999 … The 33-point win was ECC’s largest margin of victory in the series.
