DuBOIS — Todd Schatz scored three touchdowns and quarterback James Swanson was nearly perfect in throwing for two scores as the St. Marys Flying Dutchmen spoiled Homecoming Night in DuBois with a 32-21 win over the Beavers.

It’s the first time in 26 years that St. Marys (4-2) has beaten DuBois two straight times.

Offensively speaking, the St. Marys Flying Dutchmen haven’t been anything special this year. The Dutch came in ranking 19th out of 26 teams in District 9 in yards per game. The numbers didn’t get much of a boost, but the big-play timing was enough.

St. Marys intercepted DuBois quarterback four times and sacked him three times. Jeremy Williams returning his second interception of the year for a touchdown.

Toss in Brett Quiggle’s game-opening 75-yard kickoff return that set up Schatz’s first touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage and you come up with a perfect recipe St. Marys.

DuBois (2-4) couldn’t overcome a call that went against them on the second play of the second quarter.

Mike Yamrick’s sack of Swanson appeared to result in a fumble and 41-yard return for a touchdown by Ricky Shenkle, but the play was ruled dead on forward progress before the fumble.

The Beavers had trouble getting past that mentally. Instead of leading 14-7, the Beavers trailed 14-7 a little over three minutes later when St. Marys turned its first of four Henry pickoffs into a score.

Oddly enough, DuBois was not whistle for any penalties, compared to St. Marys’ modest total of five for 35 yards.

DuBois scored on its second possession to tie the game on Shenkle’s 21-yard run.

After punting instead of watching Shenkle’s apparent fumble return, St. Marys got the ball back two plays later on Quiggle’s interception. That set up Swanson’s 17-yard pass to Shane Krise in the corner of the end zone over two DuBois defenders.

But DuBois answered back in the stretch of a flurry of scoring and tied it at 14-14 when Les Miller scored from 18 yards on the ensuing possession that lasted just five plays thanks to Garrett Malmgren’s 49-yard kickoff return.

Swanson and the Dutch needed just one play to respond as he hit Schatz in a perfectly executed screen pass that went for 57 yards down the St. Marys sideline.

Swanson completed all five of his passes for 102 yards.

St. Marys then turned to its defense for some more offense as Williams picked off Henry and raced 55 yards for a touchdown, his second of the year to make it 26-14. Williams scored on an 11-yard interception return against Clarion in Week 3.

DuBois needed to answer in the first possession of the second half and did, marching 70 yards on 15 running plays, chewing up 8:08 of the clock. Malmgren’s 22-yarder on third-and-six at the Dutch 25 set up Henry’s 1-yard run three plays later.

Trailing 26-21, the Beavers then managed to get one first down with two turnovers in their final four possessions of the game. St. Marys put the game away when Schatz scampered in from 36 yards out on a wraparound draw play on third-and-six with 5:34 remaining.

Schatz’s 36-yarder was the Dutch’s first first down of the second half. But while St. Marys sputtered some offensively, the field position game clearly was on their side. The Beavers’ two possessions after cutting the margin to five points began at the 13 and 7 thanks to two well-placed punts, by, of all people, Schatz.

NOTES: Both teams are back in action this Friday. DuBois heads to District 4 at Selinsgrove while St. Marys hosts Punxsutawney. … St. Marys edged DuBois, 251-250, in yardage.
