MONITEAU – Karns City left no doubt who the best team in the KSAC is after a 39-19 rout of Moniteau Friday night at Moniteau.

The game wasn’t even as a close as the final score indicated, as the Gremlins (7-0 overall, 5-0 KSAC) scored 32 straight points after the game was tied at seven to take a 39-7 lead in the third quarter.

The teams were tied at seven at the end of the first quarter thank to a 20-yard Mike McConnell run for Karns City and a 12-yard James Shope run for Moniteau.

But Karns City scored all four times it had the ball in the second quarter outscoring Moniteau (5-2, 4-1) 25-0 in the quarter to take a 32-7 halftime lead.

Matt McConnell broke the tie with a 30-yard field goal eight seconds into the second quarter.

Karns City made it 17-7 two minutes later when Anthony Stimac, who was 8-for-17 passing for 206 yards and two touchdowns while running for a team-high 69 yards and a touchdown, hit Matt McConnell with a 54-yard touchdown pass.

The Gremlins then put the game away with two touchdowns less than a minute apart late in the first half.

Stimac found Josh Callender with a 6-yard scoring toss at the 2:31 mark capping an 8-play, 73-yard drive that made the score 24-7.

Earl Everetts then sacked Moniteau quarterback Tyler Armagost, one of four times the junior was sacked, at the Warrior 32-yard line 11 seconds later causing Armagost to fumble the football. Everetts recovered the ball at the 32, and that set up a 23-yard scoring run by Stimac with 1:34 left. A 2-point conversion pass to Cameron Turner made it 32-7.

A 1-yard run by Markus LaVan in the third quarter finished the scoring for Karns City before Moniteau got a 24-yard pass from Armagost to Josh Loos and a 5-yard pass from Armagost to Mitch Czech in the fourth quarter to make the game look closer.

Armagost had fantasy-type passing numbers going 22 of 37 for 322 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He was sacked the four times, however, had fumbled the ball three times losing all three. Also, 199 of his passing yards and both his touchdowns came in the fourth quarter after the game was out of reach.

Loos was the major recipient of Armagost’s night catching 11 passes for 188 yards. The senior entered the game with 12 catches for 244 yards but now has 23 for 432.

While the Warriors had some success through the air, Moniteau couldn’t run the football. The Warriors, who were averaging 236.8 yards per game rushing, had negative 10 vs. a Karns City defense that has allowed negative six yards rushing the past two weeks. Shope, who was averaging 167.8 yards per game over his last four games, was limited to 29 yards on 11 carries his second lowest total of the season.

LaVan added 12 carries for 57 yards for Karns City, while Callender had three catches for 60 yards.

NOTES - Karns City can clinch at least a share of its third straight KSAC title with a win over either A-C Valley next week or Union in two weeks. The Gremlins have won three straight over Moniteau and 23 of the last 28 games dating back to 1980. Karns City leads the all-time series 35-18-2 ... Karns City has won 18 straight KSAC games ... Moniteau was coming off a 22-14 win over Western Beaver, who was ranked ninth in the state in Class A by the PA Football News ... Moniteau is at Redbank Valley next week.
