NEW BETHLEHEM – Redbank Valley built a 28-0 first-half lead and a 35-6 lead late in the third quarter and then had to hold on for a 49-36 win over visiting Moniteau Friday night.

Despite the two big advantages, the game wasn’t solidly in Redbank Valley’s corner until a 1-yard Jake Smith touchdown run with 46 seconds left gave the Bulldogs a two-possession lead.

Smith’s score came at the end of a 6:37 drive that saw Redbank Valley (7-1 overall, 5-1 KSAC) overcome 25 yards of penalties. Smith completed two key passes on the drive including 20-yard strike to Nash Rupp on third-and-18 from midfield.

The game-clinching drive, that didn’t look like it would be needed just 12 minutes before resulted after a furious Moniteau comeback.

A 14-yard pass from Smith to Jerrett Magagnotti with 3:18 left in the third quarter gave Redbank the seemingly comfortable 35-7 lead.

But Moniteau came storming back scoring twice in the final 2:18 of the third quarter to cut the lead to 35-20.

Tyler Armagost scored both touchdown for Moniteau (6-2, 4-2) on a 5-yard run and a 1-yard run.

The 5-yard run came at the end of a 61-yard drive that saw Armagost account for all 61 yards (29 rushing, 32 passing).

The 1-yard score came after John McFadden picked off a Smith pass at the Redbank valley 24 and returned it to the Bulldog 13. It took Moniteau just three plays to go the 14 yards.

Redbank Valley, though, seemed to stem the tide 58 seconds into the fourth quarter when Alex Bladel broke a 69-yard touchdown run on a broken play giving the Bulldogs a 42-20 lead.

The play was originally designed to go right, but Bladel initially fumbled Smith’s pitch. He quickly recovered the ball and looked to be running left before making a sharp cut back to the right. He then out ran the Warrior defense to the end zone.

But Moniteau stole the momentum right back on its next offensive play when Armagost hit James Shope with a 70-yard scoring pass making it 42-28.

Redbank Valley had built the 28-0 first-half lead thanks to a 5-yard Bladel run in the first quarter, two 10-yard Smith to Rupp passes in the second quarter and a 55-yard Kasey Haines punt return for a touchdown with 1:31 left before halftime. On the punt return, Rupp fielded the booted ball and handed it to Haines on an end-around.

But Moniteau got some life right before halftime when Armagost hit Dakota Campbell with a 9-yard scoring pass with 23 seconds left in the half cutting the score to 28-6 at the break.

Smith and Bladel each had monster games for Redbank Valley had a monster game for Redbank Valley accounting for 445 of Redbank Valley’s 480 yards and 18 of the Bulldogs 20 first downs.

Smith was 7-for-16 passing for 118 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while running 21 times for 120 yards and a score. He accounted for 11 first downs.  He also came up with a sack on defense.

Bladel, meanwhile, ran for a career-high 207 yards on 24 carries while scoring twice. He accounted for seven first downs.

Rupp chipped in with five catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns.

Armagost led Moniteau going 18-for-33 passing for 286 yards and two touchdowns while running eight times for 20 yards and two scores.

Shipe had seven carries for 29 yards and two catches for 69 yards and the touchdown. Clayton Casper had five grabs for 92 yards, and Josh Loos had five for 56.

NOTES - The score was a sharp contrast from last year's game won 7-6 by Redbank Valley in a mud bowl at Moniteau
