PORT ALLEGANY 29, SHEFFIELD 7

PORT ALLEGANY – Behind two touchdown runs by Derick Morey, Port Allegany moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 29-7 win over visiting Sheffield Saturday afternoon.

Morey scored the first and last touchdowns for the Gators (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML North), and Mark Larson and Nick Nichols added scoring runs in between.

Nichols led Port Allegany with 10 carries for 78 yards, while Larson had 10 carries for 50 yards and Morey six for 34 while also going 2-for-4 for 21 yards passing. Morey scored on runs of 1 and 38 yards, Larson on a 10-yard scamper and Nichols on a 45-yard burst.

Sheffield (0-2, 0-2) scored on a 77-yard fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Craig Fitch to Jordan Copley. Fitch finished the day 7 of 17 passing for 121 yards, while Copley had four catches for 89 yards and 12 runs for 51 yards.

Josh Guerrero paced Port Allegany’s defense with 13 tackles.

COUDERSPORT 36, OTTO-ELDRED 0

DUKE CENTER – Boomer Wetzel threw two touchdown passes to Colon Corey to lead visiting Coudersport to a 36-0 win over Otto-Eldred Friday night in AML North action.

Coudersport (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML North) got tuned up for its showdown next week with Cameron County by racing out to a 28-0 halftime lead.

Kyle Gee (1-yard run), Tim Thomas (3-yard run) and Corey (20-yard pass from Wetzel) staked the Falcons to a 21-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game. Derek Burdick then added 1-yard run in the second quarter when Wetzel hit Corey with a 69-yard scoring strike late in the game to set the final score.

Tod Chaffee led Otto (0-2, 0-2) with 14 carries for 47 yards.

Wetzel paced Coudy going 7 of 11 passing for 156 yards and the two scores. He also threw an interception. Corey had three catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns, while Thomas ran 11 times for 93 yards and a score.

ST. MARYS 49, MONITEAU 29

ST. MARYS – Brian Tamburlin ran for 110 yards and three touchdowns to lead St. Marys to a 49-29 win over visiting Moniteau Friday night.

The final score was closer than the actual game, as Moniteau scored 16 points in the final 3:42 after St. Marys had taken a 49-13 lead into the fourth quarter. The Dutch (1-1) actually led 49-7 late in the third quarter.

Brian Tamburlin led St. Marys with 13 carries for 109 yards and three touchdowns. He scored on runs of 2, 40 and 20.

Tamburlin’s 2-yard run late in the first quarter staked the Dutch to a 6-0 lead at the end of the quarter, and then St. Marys exploded for 28 points in the second quarter to take a 35-7 halftime lead.

Tamburlin opened the quarter with scoring runs of 40 and 20 yards before Todd Schatz returned a Tyler Armagost interception 45 yards for a touchdown making it 28-0 less than four minutes into the second quarter. 

After Moniteau got on the board with a 10-yard run by Dakota Campbell, St. Marys answered with a 9-yard scoring pass from James Swanson to Schatz just 32 seconds before halftime. Schatz ran 12 times for 104 yards and caught one pass for a touchdown. 

The Dutch continued to poor it on in the third quarter scoring on a 40-yard run by Jeremy Williams and a 52-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Sean Sadosky to put the Mercy Rule into action.

Moniteau scored the game’s final three touchdowns on an 11-yard scoring pass from Armagost to Josh Loss, a 19-yard run by Campbell and a 62-yard scoring toss from Armagost to John McFadden with just 46 seconds left in the game.

Armagost was 14-for-30 passing for 197 yards, two touchdowns and the one interception. He also ran seven times for 42 yards. Campbell added seven carries for 66 yards and two scores, while McFadden had nine catches for 127 yards and the touchdown.

It was St. Marys first win vs. a KSAC opponent since it beat Moniteau 20-14 Sept. 9, 2005. The Dutch had lost five straight to KSAC teams since then, and are still just 6-19 vs. the KSAC since 1999 with two of the wins coming over Moniteau and two over A-C Valley.     

BROCKWAY 41, RIDGWAY 19

RIDGWAY – What a difference a week made for the Brockway Rovers.

Last week, Brockway lost 37-0 in head coach Frank Varischetti’s debut. This week, the Rovers scored 27 second quarter point and beat the Jerico Weitzel-less Ridgway Elkers 41-19 in Ridgway giving Varischetti his first victory.

The Rovers (1-1 overall, 1-1 AML South) used a pair of 100-yard rushers to knock off the Elkers, who lost by 22 despite gaining 380 yards of their own.

Dillon Park paced the Brockway attack with 11 carries for 104 yards and two touchdowns while adding four catches for 104 more yards and another score giving him 208 total yards of offense and three touchdowns on the night.   

Cam Makay added 17 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown for the Rovers, while quarterback Matt Pentz was 8-for-12 for 168 yards and two scores while also throwing an interception.

For the second straight week, Elliott Pontious led Ridgway (1-1, 1-1) gaining 55 yards rushing and a touchdown on 15 carries and catching two passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Barry Wilson chipped in with 17 carries for 128 yards including a 73-yard scoring run, and quarterback Nick Dickant was 12-for-23 for 162 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The two teams combined to score 40 points in the second quarter after a scoreless first quarter with Brockway taking a 27-13 halftime lead.

Ethan Gillespie then added a 67-yard fumble return for a touchdown late in the third quarter to put the Rovers on top 35-13 at the end of three.  

CAMERON COUNTY 62, SMETHPORT 0

EMPORIUM – Four seasons ago, Cameron County scored 55 points the entire season while going 0-9.

Flash forward to Friday night when the Red Raiders scored 62 in one night in pounding Smethport 62-0 handing the Hubbers their 11th straight loss.

Cameron County outgained Smethport 388-92 and took advantage of six Hubber turnovers (3 fumbles, 3 interceptions) to score its most points since a 72-6 win over Ridgway Oct. 1, 1999. The 62 points allowed were the most by Smethport (0-2, 0-2) since a 68-7 loss at Curwensville to open up the 2004 season. 

The Red Raiders (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML North) led 14 at the end of the first quarter and then scored 27 points in the second quarter to take a 41-0 halftime lead.

Jordan Crane completed four passes (4 of 6) to lead Cameron County with all four going for touchdowns. He threw for 112 yards hitting Daniel Sullivan with a 15-yard scoring strike, Abram Zoschg with a 70-yard scoring pass, Sean McManigle with a 6-yard scoring toss and Mike Malizia with a 21-yard scoring pass. He also ran once for 12 yards and a touchdown, while Zoschg added a 12-yard scoring run and Charlie Holjencin a 47-yard interception return for a score. Hunter Bardo and Matthew Bailey also joined the scoring attack for Cameron.   

NOTES - It was Cameron's first shutout of Smethport since a 17-0 win in 1999, and its the eighth time the Red Raiders have shut out the Hubbers ... It was also the biggest win ever by point margin for Cameron over Smethport surpassing a 54-0 win way back in 1932, and it is the first time the Red Raiders have beaten the Hubbers three straight times since winning four in a row from 1935-38. 

KANE 42, JOHNSONBURG 16

KANE – Kane scored three touchdowns on plays of 35 yards or longer and beat Johnsonburg 42-16 in AML South action Friday night in Kane.

John Bizzak caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from Zach Anderson 56 seconds into the game and added 39-yard interception return for a touchdown less than three minutes later helping the Wolves (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML South) stake themselves to a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Mike Punk added a 70-yard touchdown run late in the first half, as Kane led 35-0 at halftime and 42-0 early in the third quarter. Also scoring for the Wolves were Dustin Moran twice (10-yard run; 14-yard run) and Matt Mix (7-yard run).

The Rams (0-2, 0-2) got on the board with a 6-yard run from Ren Yonker late in the third quarter before Zach Padasak hit Craig Carrow with an 11-yard pass with 30 seconds left in the game.

Thanks to the long TD run, Punk led Kane with two carries for 64 yards, while Moran had eight totes for 48 yards. Anderson was 3-for-6 for 74 yards and the touchdown with Bizzak catching two passes for 71 yards and the score.

Padasak was 8-for-18 passing for 79 yards, the touchdown and three interceptions for Johnsonburg.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 28, A-C VALLEY 12

FOXBURG – Clarion-Limestone scored 22 points in a 7-minute span in the second quarter to propel itself to a 28-12 win at A-C Valley Friday night.

Sophomore quarterback Dan Miller ran for a score and threw for a score, and Andy Wilson ran for two touchdowns to lead the Lions (1-1 overall, 1-1 KSAC) to their first win of the season.

Luke Walker’s 67-yard kickoff return following Wilson’s first touchdown run of the game scored A-C Valley’s first points of the season midway through the second quarter, and Mike Himes’ 50-yard scamper late in the third quarter tallied the first offensive points of the year for the Falcons (0-2, 0-2), who had a much improved 210 yards offense after gaining just 1 last week in a 40-0 loss at Clarion.

Wilson led C-L rushing 10 times for 75 yards and the two touchdowns, while catching three passes for 44 yards.

Miller was 9-for-20 passing for 134 yards, one TD and one INT while running five times for 14 yards and a score. He hit Jesse Montana with a 28-yard scoring pass late in the first half giving C-L a 22-6 halftime lead. Montana had three catches for 44 yards.

Himes led A-C Valley with nine carries for 68 yards and the touchdown while adding four catches for 61 yards. He added an interception on defense. Walker was 7-for-12 passing for 105 yards.

REDBANK VALLEY 48, UNION 6

NEW BETHLEHEM – Jake Smith ran for three touchdowns and threw for a fourth ot lead Redbank Valley to a 48-6 win over visiting Union Friday night.

Smith ran 10 times for 124 yards and the three scores and was 8 of 11 passing for 148 yards and the touchdown while helping the Bulldogs (2-0 overall, 2-0 KSAC) to their second straight win.

Nash Rupp, Alex Bladel (6 carries, 39 yards) and Shiloh Buchleitner also ran for touchdowns for Redbank Valley, and Craig Hibell caught a 17-yard scoring pass from Smith.

A 75-yard fourth quarter touchdown run by Zach Traister accounted for Union’s lone score. The Golden Knights (0-2 overall, 0-1) dropped their second straight to open the season.  

Traister led Union with 10 carries for the 108 yards and a touchdown.

KARNS CITY 35, HICKORY 11

HERMITAGE – Karns City used a total team effort to get a 35-11 win at Hickory Friday night.

Five different Gremlins found the end zone – all on the ground – including Josh Callender, Marcus LaVan, Brett Green, Stephon Conto and Josh Stimac.

Karns City (2-0) led just 6-3 at halftime before scoring 22 third-quarter points to take a 28-11 lead at the end of three quarters.

The Gremlins ran for 269 yards in the game with 13 different players carrying the football. Conto led the way with three carries for 89 yards including a 57-yard touchdown run.
