BRADFORD
49, PUNXSUTAWNEY 13 BRADFORD — Taylor
O’Brien rushed for 134 yards on 14 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Bradford Owls breezed by
visiting Punxsutawney Friday night. O’Brien scored on
runs of 39, 2, 10 and 3 yards to spark a 387-yard rushing effort by the Owls (2-0), who only attempted
two passes, both incomplete. Dan McMurtrie also went over the century mark in rushing with 114 yards on
eight carries. He also scored on a 43-yard run. Bradford led 28-6 at
intermission. O’Brien scored the game’s first TD on his 39-yarder just two plays after the opening
kickoff. His 2-yarder also came in the first quarter on a drive where the Owls lost starting
quarterback Ben Walter to an injury. He did not return to the game. Punxsutawney (0-3)
scored its first touchdown on the final play of the first quarter when backup quarterback Kevin Zambory
hit Bobby Wingert with a 11-yard scoring pass. Bradford scored two
more times before intermission. O’Brien found the end zone for the third time on a 10-yard run and
McMurtrie scored his first TD of the season on his 43-yarder. Nick Johnson scored
on a 5-yard run in the third quarter and O’Brien’s fourth score from three yards out invoked the
PIAA Mercy Rule in the fourth quarter. The Chucks got a 53-yard TD run from Nick Wehrle to close the
scoring. The Owls have won
eight of their last 10 against their District 9 League rivals. HOLLIDAYSBURG
42, CLEARFIELD 35 CLEARFIELD
– Defense was optional Friday night when visiting Hollidaysburg beat Clearfield 42-35 in a MAC Large
Schools Division game. The
two teams combined for 35 first downs (19 by Clearfield, 16 by Hollidaysburg) and 754 yards of offense
(384 for Hollidaysburg, 370 for Clearfield) not to mention 28 points in the game’s final 4:43. Brad
Nocek paced the Tigers (3-0 overall, 3-0 MAC Large Schools) with 164 yards rushing and two touchdowns
while also returning a punt 60 yards for a score. Jarrin
Campman, meanwhile, led Clearfield (1-2, 0-1) going 19-for-28 passing for 259 yards and two touchdowns
while also running 14 times for 53 yards and two more scores. Drew Hipps caught five of Campman’s
passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. The
game was tied at 14 at halftime before Hollidaysburg scored twice in less than three minutes in the
third quarter to take a 28-14 lead. But
Clearfield closed the gap to 28-21 on a 21-yard pass from Campman to Hipps early in the fourth quarter
before the teams combined to score four touchdowns in the final 4:43. First,
Nocek restored a 2-touchdown lead for Hollidaysburg with a 3-yard run, but Campman hit Hryn with a
14-yard pass to make it 34-28 Tigers with 2:46 to play. Hollidaysburg
answered back with a 5-yard scoring run by Nick Milardo at 1:55 making it 4-28, but Campman’s 1-yard
scoring run with 49 seconds left brought the Bisons back to within a score. Patrick
Smith was 8 of 16 passing for 142 yards and a touchdown for Hollidaysburg, while Isiah Morgan added 49
yards on 16 carries for Clearfield. The teams combined for 35 first downs BROCKWAY
35, CURWENSVILLE 20 BROCKWAY
– For just the second time in the nine years since both teams joined the AML, Brockway beat visiting
Curwensville 35-20 Friday night. It
was the Rovers first win over the Golden Tide since a 35-18 victory in 2003, and just the second since
the teams joined the AML South in 1999. Last year, Curwensville beat Brockway 29-0. With
the loss, Curwensville (0-3 overall, 0-3 AML South) begins a season 0-3 for the first time since 2003.
The Tide haven’t begun 0-4 since going 1-9 in 1997. Dillon
Park had a monster game for Brockway running 23 times for 213 yards and two touchdowns including the
game sealer on a 65-yard run with just 14 seconds remaining. Brockway
(2-1, 2-1) led 20-14 at halftime before making it 28-14 at the end of three quarters. But
Curwensville rallied to within a touchdown on a 4-yard Ben McGary run with 9:15 to play. Camdon
Makay added two rushing touchdowns for Brockway while running for 90 yards on 16 carries and catching
one pass for nine yards, while David Kalgren had two rushing scores for Curwensville while running 10
times for 33 yards. McGary
led the Tide with 18 carries for 94 yards and added two catches for 20 yards with Kalgren also going
6-for-11 passing for 66 yards and an interception. He added an interception on defense. Cory Blooms
chipped in with 12 carries for 70 yards. Brockway
outgained Curwensville 381-325. KANE
33, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 7 ST.
MARYS – Kane scored 20 unanswered second-half points to blow away Elk County Catholic 33-7 in a
match-up of unbeaten AML South teams Friday night in St. Marys. The
Wolves (3-0 overall, 3-0 AML South) led just 13-7 at halftime before getting two Zach Anderson
touchdown passes in the third quarter to break open the game. Anderson
had a big night going 11-for-16 passing for 205 yards and three touchdowns. Ross Nicholson added a
touchdown receiving and a touchdown running for the Wolves, who outgained ECC 301-201. Deryk
Smith added three catches for 53 yards and a score, Matt Mix had two grabs for 53 yards and Dustin
Moran one catch for 34 yards and a TD for Kane. Mike Punk also returned an interception 31 yards for
Kane’s first touchdown. ECC’s
lone score came when Eric Mastrogiacomo recovered his own fumble in the end zone at the end of a 1-yard
run. He ran 19 times for 66 yards and the score to lead ECC, while Matt Meholic had three carries for
70 yards. BROOKVILLE
27, DUBOIS 19 BROOKVILLE
– Shane Heschke accounted for 300 of Brookville’s 353 yards of offense and three of the Raiders
four touchdowns in a 27-19 win over visiting DuBois in a D9 League match-up Friday night. Heschke,
the senior quarterback, ran 11 times for 189 yards and a score while going 5-for-11 passing for 111
yards and two more scores. To add to his great night he had an interception on defense. DuBois
(1-2 overall, 1-1 D9 League) limited Brookville’s Joe Galbraith to 50 yards and a touchdown on 16
carries but had no answers for Heschke who threw first-half scoring strikes of 67 and 26 yards to Alex
Kerr and scored on a 62-yard run in the third quarter. Kerr finished the game with three catches for 99
yards and the two touchdowns. He also had an interception and 11 tackles on defense. Garrett
Malmgren had a big night for DuBois rushing 25 times for 148 yards and two touchdowns while adding five
catches for 70 yards, but four interceptions from quarterback Danny Henry cost the Beavers. Henry was
13-for-22 passing for 116 yards and a touchdown. Brookville
(2-1, 1-0) led 13-6 at halftime before DuBois tied the game at 13 on a 27-yard Malmgren run midway
through the third quarter. But
Galbraith’s 2-yard scoring run with 5:14 left in the third quarter gave Brookville the lead for good,
and Heschke’s long run made it 27-13 Raiders. Henry
found Kyle Bish with an 18-yard scoring strike midway through the fourth quarter to close out the
scoring.
PORT
ALLEGANY 33, SMETHPORT 7 SMETHPORT
– Port Allegany moved to 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 2003 with a 33-7 win at
Smethport Friday night. Five
different Gators scored including a 20-yard Nick Nichols run, a 9-yard Mark Larson run, a 29-yard pass
from Derick Morey to AJ Guerrero, a 1-yard Morey run and a 15-yard Paul Woods run. Morey
was 5-for-9 passing for 77 yards and a touchdown and also ran eight times for 29 yards and the score.
Nichols had 13 carries for 87 yards and the touchdown and three catches for 38 yards, while Larson had
21 carries for 49 yards and one touchdown while also intercepting a pass on defense. Josh
Guerrero led the Port Allegany defense with 16 tackles, while Set Lowery added 11 tackles and a sack
for the Gators (3-0 overall, 3-0 AML North) Smethport
(0-3, 0-3) dropped its 12th straight games. Hubber stats are pending. KEYSTONE
53, UNION 0 RIMERSBURG
– Ben Black ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 67 more yards (2-for-3) to lead
Keystone to a 53-0 win at Union Friday night. Dan
Reed, who had an interception on defense, added 98 yards rushing and a touchdown and 80 yards passing
(4-for-4) and a touchdown for the Panthers (2-1 overall, 2-1 KSAC) who tied their largest margin of
victory this century. Derek
Swartfager (8 carries, 83 yards) also scored two touchdowns for Keystone, which outgained Union 527
yards to 183 including 380 on the ground. The Panthers came into the game having rushed for just 62
yards on 53 carries in their first two games. Zach
Traister led Union with nine carries for 57 yards, while Colby Davis had seven for 42. Keystone
led 34-0 at halftime. KARNS
CITY 42, CLARION-LIMESTONE 0 STRATTANVILLE
— The visiting Karns City Gremlins marched to a 35-0 lead by intermission and started the second half
with the Mercy Rule running clock on their way to a 42-0 rout of the Lions Friday night. Six
different Gremlins (3-0, overall, 1-0 KSAC) found the end zone. Quarterback Anthony Stimac had a hand
in two scores, passing 46 yards to tight end Cameron Turner and scoring himself on an 11-yard run. Levi
Buck returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown and Ben Pyle and Stephen Conto each scored on
runs. Stimac gained 86 yards on only six rushes. Brett Green rushed for 73 yards on eight attempts. Karns
City outgained Clarion-Limestone (1-2, 1-2) 316-152. Lions quarterback Dan Miller completed 13 of 22
passes for 185 yards, but was intercepted three times. Jace Rhoads caught five balls for 95 yards. REDBANK
VALLEY 48, WEST BRANCH 0 NEW
BETHLEHEM – Jake Smith continued his torrid senior season going 9-for-15 passing for 303 yards and
four touchdowns to lead Redbank Valley to a 48-0 win over visiting West Branch in a non-conference game
Friday night. Alex Bladel added 11 carries for 63 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs (3-0), while Kasey Haines caught three passes for 76 yards and Jerrett Magagnotti two for 63 and two touchdowns.
Lance Kolesar ran 13 times for 45 yards for West Branch (0-3) which managed just 81 yards of offense on the night. OTTO-ELDRED
25, SHEFFIELD 0 WARREN
— Lightning cut short the visiting Otto-Eldred Terrors’ 25-0 win over Sheffield at Warren High
School Friday night. Officials
decided to stop the game for good with 9:47 left in the fourth quarter. Otto-Eldred notched its first
win of the year, improving to 1-2. Sheffield fell to 0-3. It
was the Travis Bair-Kurtis Breese show for the Terrors. Bair, the quarterback passed for two touchdowns
and 246 yards, 207 of it going to Breese on seven receptions. Running back Tod Chaffee rushed for 75 yards and a
touchdown on 16 carries. Jordan
Copley led Sheffield with 46 yards rushing. MONITEAU
48, A-C VALLEY 0 FOXBURG
– Behind 11 carries for 150 yards and three touchdowns from sophomore James Shope Moniteau handed A-C
Valley its 16th consecutive loss 48-0 Friday night in Foxburg. Shope
helped Moniteau rack up 360 yards of rushing on the night with Dakota Campbell chipping in with seven
carries for 61 yards and a touchdown, while Tyler Armagost was 4-for-8 passing for 96 yards and two
scores to go with one interception. Justin Sanderson had three sacks on defensive for the Warriors (2-1 overall, 2-0 KSAC). The
Falcons (0-3) were held to 1 yard of total offense, or 1 yard of rushing on 26 attempts and no passing
yards with three interceptions. It was the second time in three weeks A-C Valley has been limited to a
single yard of offense.
