COUDERSPORT 33, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 6

ST. MARYS – Boomer Wetzel threw three touchdown passes as Coudersport bounced back from its first regular-season loss in three years with a 33-6 win at Elk County Catholic Saturday night.

Wetzel was 11-for-14 passing for 134 yards and threw touchdown passes to Brett Whitman (36 yards), Justen Kinder (31 yards) and Ty Carts (1 yard). Whitman had five catches for 64 yards and Kinder two grabs for 45 yards.

Coudersport (3-1 overall, 3-1 AML North) led 20-0 at halftime despite having trouble running the football (32 carries, 77 yards). Kyle Gee led the rushing attack with 11 carries for 34 yards and a 1-yard touchdown run, while Dirk Cowburn had eight carries for 20 yards and a score. Cowburn also played a key role on defense with 14 tackles and a sack.

ECC’s lone touchdown came on a 36-yard pass from Kyle Garner to Nick Brennan with just under three minutes left. The Crusaders (2-2, 2-2 AML South) managed just 159 yards on the night including 85 rushing and turned the ball over six times (4 interceptions, 2 fumbles). Garner was 4-for-14 passing for 74 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Brennen caught three passes for 72 yards and the score, while Eric Mastrogiacomo ran 21 times for 85 yards.

BRADFORD 35, WARREN 14

WARREN – Nick Johnson and Taylor O’Brien combined to rush for 301 yards and five touchdowns to lead Bradford to a 35-14 win at Warren Saturday night.

Johnson rushed 15 times for 184 yards and two scores, while O’Brien had 17 totes for 117 yards and three scores. Dan McMurtrie added 10 carries for 65 yards and added eight tackles on defense.

The Owls’ win evens up the series, which has been played 95 times, at 45-45-5, and it is Bradford’s eighth win in the last 10 meetings and sixth in a row.

Bradford is now 3-0, while Warren falls to 1-3.

CAMERON COUNTY 59, CURWENSVILLE 22

EMPORIUM – Cameron County continued to roll scoring 53 first-half points on its way to a 59-22 blowout of defending AML South champion Curwensville Friday night at Cameron County.

Abram Zoschg scored three touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving), Jordan Crane threw two scoring passes and Taylor Songer ran 10 times for 170 yards and a score to pace the Red Raiders (4-0 overall, 4-0 AML North), who led 21-8 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring Curwensville (0-4, 0-4 South) 32-0 in the second quarter.

Zoschg rushed seven times for 43 yards and also caught one pass for 17 yards, while Crane was 4-for-6 passing for 103 yards and the two touchdowns. Cameron Clingan added nine carries for 78 yards and a score, and Andy Lippert scored for the Red Raider defense on a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown.

David Kalgren led Curwensville, which was outgained 508 yards to 191. He was 7-for-17 passing for 149 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions while rushing three times for 22 yards and a touchdown. Jessie Hoover added five catches for 136 yards and a touchdown.   

It was the second time this season Curwensville has allowed 50 or more points, and the Golden Tide are allowing 48.8 points per game. 

Cameron County, on the other hand, has scored 59 or more points twice this season and is averaging 46.5 points per game.

ST. MARYS 14, BROOKVILLE 7

ST. MARYS – St. Marys showed that its strong start wasn’t a fluke using a staunch defense and an opportunistic offense to get a 14-7 D9 League win over visiting Brookville Friday night.

The Dutch (3-1 overall, 1-0 D9 League) led 7-0 at halftime and expanded that lead to 14-0 in the early moments of the third quarter before the defense held off a late Brookville charge to seal the win. It’s St. Marys’ second win in the last three years over the Raiders (2-2, 1-1).

Todd Schatz’s 33-yard scoring run in the first half staked St. Marys to the halftime lead, and then James Swanson hit Shane Krise with a 51-yard scoring pass 1:33 into the second half to make it 14-0.

Brookville reached the scoreboard late in the third quarter on a 33-yard scoring run by Shane Heschke but that was all the scoring for the Raiders as St. Marys held an opponent to seven points for the second straight week. On the season, the Dutch are allowing just 16.5 ppg.

St. Marys outgained Brookville, 223-208. Todd Schatz led the Dutch with 85 yards on 12 carries while Brian Tamburlin added 74 yards on 22 attempts. Brookville’s Joe Galbraith rushed for 89 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback Shane Heschke rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries and was just 5 of 15 for 48 yards passing with an interception.

KANE 32, PORT ALLEGANY 7

KANE – Dustin Moran and Matt Mix each scored twice to lead Kane to a 32-7 win over visiting Port Allegany in a battle of unbeatens Friday night.

Moran, who ran 21 times for 109 yards , scored on runs of 1 and 8 yards in the first half helping the Wolves (4-0 overall, 4-0 AML South) to an 18-0 halftime lead.

Mix, meanwhile, five catches for 57 yards and two touchdowns while adding eight carries for 39 yards . He grabbed a 14-yard scoring pass from Zach Anderson in the second quarter and a 12 yarder midway through the fourth quarter. The later touchdown came at the end of an 18-play, 80-yard drive for the Wolves that are 9:21 off the clock. The drive came immediately following a 2-yard touchdown run by Port Allegany’s Derick Morey that cut the Kane lead to 18-7 with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Anderson finished the night 12 of 15 passing for 205 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and Arie Paup returned an interception 60 yards for a score.

Port Allegany was limited to 107 yards of total offense including 100 on the ground. Morey led the Gators (3-1, 3-1 AML North) with 12 carries for 42 yards and the touchdown while going 2-for-11 passing for 7 yards and an interception. Nick Nichols, who came into the game sixth in District 9 with 297 yards rushing, was limited to 15 yards on just five carries.

Kane, which won nine combined games over the last three seasons, moved to 4-0 for the first time since 2002.

JOHNSONBURG 19, OTTO-ELDRED 0

JOHNSONBURG — The Johnsonburg Rams notched their first win of the year, blanking the visiting Otto-Eldred Terrors, 19-0, Friday night.

The Rams (1-3) got scores from three different players, the first coming on special teams when Matt Shuey recovered a blocked punt in the end zone midway through the first quarter. Zane Zelehoski and Ren Yonker also found the end zone, Zelehoski scored on a 20-yard run in the second quarter and Yonker catching an 18-yard TD pass from Zach Padasak in the third quarter.

Zelehoski rushed for 86 yards on 14 carries. Craig Carrow caught five of Padasak’s nine completions for 103 yards.

For Otto-Eldred (1-3), quarterback Travis Bair completed 12 of 33 passes for 141 yards. Kurtis Breese caught seven balls for 95 yards.

RIDGWAY 48, SHEFFIELD 14

RIDGWAY — Andy Aiello and Elliott Pontious each went over 100 yards rushing to lead the Ridgway Elkers to a 48-14 rout of visiting Sheffield Friday night.

Aiello rushed for 114 yards on 10 carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 1, 5 and 67 yards. Pontious rushed for 109 yards on only seven attempts and scored on runs of 34 and 21 yards.

Ridgway (3-1) piled up 355 yards of offense, 306 on the ground, and led 41-0 by intermission.

Sheffield (0-4) was led by quarterback Craig Fitch, who completed 11 of 28 passes for 193 yards. Fitch ran for a 2-yard TD and hooked up with Larry Rudolph for a 14-yard scoring pass in the third quarter with the Mercy-Rule running clock in effect. Rudolph caught four passes for 100 yards.

BROCKWAY 41, SMETHPORT 21

SMETHPORT — Brockway quarterback Matt Pentz threw for five touchdowns, four of them in the first half and three to Camdon Makay, as the visiting Rovers beat Smethport, 41-21, Friday night.

In all, Pentz completed 9 of 114 passes for 211 yards and was intercepted twice. It didn’t take long for Pentz to get started as he hit Dillon Park for a 74-yard pass late in the first quarter.

After Smethport actually took a 7-6 lead on its following possession on Bill Pruett’s 2-yard TD run, Brockway grabbed the lead for good when Park took the ensuing kickoff and ran 74 yards for the touchdown.

It was part of Brockway’s 35-point first-half that also included Pentz’s 10- and 32-yard TD passes to Makay and a 13-yard scoring strike to Armando Fortunato. Brockway’s final score came in the third quarter on another Pentz to Makay connection from 14 yards out.

The Rovers improved to 3-1 while Smethport dropped to 0-4. Preston Birtcil rushed for Smethport’s other two scores from 5 and 61 yards out.

HOLLIDAYSBURG 42, DUBOIS 20

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers raced out to a 22-0 lead after the first quarter and breezed to a 42-20 win over visiting DuBois Friday night.

The Golden Tigers (4-0) amassed 408 yards of offense, including 232 from the air as quarterback Pat Smith completed 14 of 21 passes and threw three touchdown passes, including two to Joey Ulsh.

DuBois (1-3) got two touchdown runs from Garrett Malmgren on runs of 17 yards in the second quarter and 13 yards in the third quarter. Malmgren rushed for 53 yards on 12 carries and caught six passes for 58 yards.

Hollidaysburg invoked the Mercy-Rule running clock when it scored on Brad Nocek’s 11-yard run in the third quarter with 7:52 remaining, putting the score at 42-7.

CLEARFIELD 42, PUNXSUTAWNEY 7

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Isiah Morgan and Jarrin Campman helped account for all six Clearfield touchdowns in a 42-7 Bison win at Punxsutawney Friday night.

Morgan ran 17 times for a team-high 81 yards and three touchdowns, while Campman ran seven times for 28 yards and two touchdowns and was 6-for-10 passing for 130 yards and a touchdown – a 17-yard toss to Drew Hipps. Hipps had two catches for 44 yards for the Bisons (2-2 overall, 1-1 MAC Large Schools), who broke a two-game losing streak.

Austin Furman led Punxsutawney (0-4, 0-2), which was outgained 318 yards to 117, with 15 carries for 136 yards and a touchdown. But the Chucks couldn’t throw the ball going 0-for-13 passing with three picks (they turned the ball over five times total). Zach Smith making his return to the line-up after missing last week with an injury was 0-for-12 with two picks while Furman was 0-for-1 with one interception.

Clearfield led 42-0 at halftime after scoring 21 points in each of the first two quarters. Punxsutawney’s lone score came with 9:55 left in the third quarter.

PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA 49, CLARION-LIMESTONE 22

STRATTANVILLE – Clarion-Limestone put up 366 yards of offense including 230 yards passing from Dan Miller, but it wasn’t enough to help the Lions who fell 49-22 to visiting Philipsburg-Osceola in a non-conference game.

Miller was 17 of 32 passing for 230 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and Harry Cooper, making his season-debut after missing the first three games because of a school rule ran 11 times for 114 yards including an 85-yard touchdown jaunt. Cooper added six catches for 75 yards, while Jace Rhoads had eight grabs for 113 yards and a touchdown. Andy Wilson also caught a scoring pass for the Lions (1-3).

Bo Reifer led P-O (4-0) with three touchdown passes including two to J.D. Mason while helping the Mounties grab a 28-8 halftime lead. Dimtri Sidorick added 96 yards rushing and a touchdown for P-O, which gained 414 yards.  

MONITEAU 48, UNION 12

WEST SUNBURY – Tyler Armagost and James Shope accounted for 450 yards and seven touchdowns to lead Moniteau to a 48-12 win over visiting Union Friday night.

Armagost was 9-for-22 passing for 210 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Dakota Campbell, while running six times for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Shope, meanwhile, ran 10 times for 181 yards and three scores.

Zach Traister continued his solid play for Union scoring on an 83-yard touchdown pass from Matt Gagliano and returning a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. He has two catches for 94 yards.

Gagliano, who handled all the quarterback duties for a second straight week because of an injury to Zach Himes, was 16-for-43 passing for 267 yards and the touchdown but also threw four interceptions. A.J. Ethriedge caught four passes for 75 yards.

Moniteau improves to 3-1 overall, 3-0 KSAC with the win, while Union drops to 0-4 overall, 0-3 in the KSAC.
