SHEFFIELD 22, SMETHPORT 14

SHEFFIELD – Thanks to two touchdowns and a field goal from Jordan Copley and a nice day on the ground and on defense from Matt Bryant, Sheffield won its first game of the season 22-14 over visiting Smethport Saturday afternoon at Sheffield.

The win broke an 8-game losing streak for Sheffield, which last won a year ago to the day 16-14 at Smethport, and it gave first-year head coach John Bonavita his first win in his second tour of duty with the Wolverines.

Meanwhile, the loss extended Smethport’s losing streak to 14 games, the second longest in District 9.

Copley scored a touchdown rushing, a touchdown receiving and kicked a 26-yard field goal, and Bryant ran for 132 yards and a touchdown and made nine tackles on defense while interception a pass. Copley finished with 21 yards rushing and five catches for 59 yards.

“We had a number of different players making plays on both sides of the ball,” Bonavita said. “And our offensive line did a great job. It was very consistent today.”

Preston Birtcil scored on a 65-yard run for Smethport, and Bill Pruett had a 7-yard scoring run. Birtcil ran 13 times for 114 yards and Pruett 12 for 49.

DUBOIS 26, KITTANNING 6

KITTANNING – Kyle Bish caught two touchdown passes and threw a touchdown pass and Danny Henry was nearly perfect passing the football as visiting DuBois toppled Kittanning 26-6 in an interdistrict showdown Friday night.

Bish, who caught five passes for 98 yards, caught touchdown passes of 31 and 21 yards from Henry in the second quarter to stake the Beavers (2-3) to a 14-0 halftime lead (he also kicked both extra points). Bish then hit Josh Means with a 38-yard scoring toss in the third quarter making it 20-0.

Henry was 10-for-11 passing for 115 yards and the two touchdowns, while Garrett Malmgren ran 14 times for 77 yards.

BELLEFONTE 41, CLEARFIELD 31

BELLEFONTE – Bellefonte scored three touchdowns in a span of just under four minutes late in the fourth quarter to erase 24-21 deficit and get a 41-31 win over visiting Clearfield.

The Bisons (2-3 overall, 1-2 MAC Large Schools) led by three following a 23-yard touchdown pass from Jarrin Campman to Drew Hipps with 8:14 left.

But Bellefonte (4-1, 3-0) retook the lead 28-24 on a 27-yard pass from Ryan Poorman to Heath Sprout with 5:57 to play.

Clearfield looked like it was going to answer the score driving to the Red Raider 33-yard line. But at the 33, Campman fumbled, and Bellefonte’s Robbie Irwin returned the loose ball 67 yards for a touchdown and 35-24 lead with 4:54 left.

The Red Raiders then made it 41-24 on a 3-yard pass from Poorman to Irwin with 1:59 left following a Bryan Rodgers interception of a Campman pass before Hipps caught a 45-yard scoring pass from Brandon Sass with 57 seconds to play.

The Bisons recovered the on-side kick, but Sass was intercepted in the end zone ending any hope of a comeback.

Sprout got things started fast for Bellefonte returning the opening kickoff of the game 95 yards for a touchdown before Clearfield tied the game a minute later on a 1-yard Campman run.

Poorman then put Bellefonte back in front with a 20-yard pass from Matt Fisher 1:03 into the second quarter before Campman hit Hipps with a 25-yard scoring pass to tie the game at 14 midway through the second quarter. Parker Herrington then gave Clearfield a 17-14 lead with 30-yard field goal with 36 seconds left in the first half, a lead the Bisons held until Poorman hit Greg Benscoter with a 16-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter.

Clearfield outgained Bellefonte 438-266 but turned the ball over five times including two interceptions by Campman and one pick by Sass.

Hipps had five catches for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Campman was 11-for-21 passing for 177 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions and also ran 15 times for 74 yards. Sass was 3-for-5 passing for 67 yards, the touchdown and the interception, and Isiah Morgan ran 15 times for 61 yards.

Poorman was 11-for-18 passing for 190 yards and four scores to lead Bellefonte. Benscoter ran 19 times for 79 yards, and Irwin had four catches for 57 yards.

KANE 42, RIDGWAY 27

RIDGWAY – Ridgway, with Jerico Weitzel, back in the line-up gave visiting Kane all it could handle for three quarters, but the Wolves scored 14 points early in the fourth quarter to get a 42-27 AML South win over the Elkers Friday night.

Kane led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter but Ridgway outscored Kane 20-7 in the second quarter to cut the Wolves lead to 21-20.

But Kane scored 21 straight points in a span 4:34 between the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth quarter to take a commanding 42-20 lead before Ridgway scored a meaningless touchdowns with nine seconds to play.

Dustin Moran, Mike Punk and Zach Anderson led Kane.

Moran also had an interception on defense.

John Bizzak added an 80-yard scoring catch, and Matt Mix had a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown for Kane.

Weitzel, who had been out since Week One with a shoulder injury, scored three of Ridgway’s four touchdowns including all three in the second quarter.

He scored on a 3-yard run, a 36-yard fumble recovery and a 54-yard pass from Nick Dickant and finished the night with 12 carries for 87 yards and one catch for 54 yards. He was also 0-for-2 passing with an interception.

HUNTINGDON 20, PUNXSUTAWNEY 6

HUNTINGDON – Punxsutawney remained winless with a 20-6 loss at Huntingdon Friday night.

The Chucks (0-5 overall, 0-3 MAC-Large Schools) trailed 13-0 at halftime and 20-0 at the end of three quarters before getting a fourth quarter score from Austin Furman.

Furman led Punxsy with 17 carries for 70 yards and six catches for 68 yards, while Mike Decker added nine carries for 65 yards. Zach Smith was 9 of 15 passing for 113 yards and an interception.

MONITEAU 28, KEYSTONE 0

KNOX – James Shope ran 28 times for 205 yards and two touchdowns to lead Moniteau to a 28-0 blanking of Keystone Friday night in Knox.

Shope scored twice in the second half to help the Warriors (4-1 overall, 4-0 KSAC) salt the game away.

Moniteau grabbed a 7-0 lead at halftime thanks to a 1-yard Tyler Armagost touchdown run.

The Warriors then went ahead 14-0 in the third quarter on a 10-yard run by Armagost before Shope scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter and an 18-yard jaunt in the fourth.

Armagost didn’t have a good night passing going 5-for-13 for 60 yards and two interceptions, but Keystone’s Dan Reed was just 5 of 23 for 43 yards and five interceptions.

Kyle Rhoads had four catches for 32 yards for Keystone, which has lost two straight and falls to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in the KSAC.

BROOKVILLE 57, CLARION-LIMESTONE 0

BROOKVILLE – Joe Galbraith ran nine times for 293 yards and four touchdowns as homestanding Brookville rolled to a 57-0 win over Clarion-Limestone in a non-conference match-up that will be a KSAC game next season.

Behind Galbraith’s big night, Brookville (3-2) racked up 463 yards rushing and 529 total yards while rebounding nicely from a 14-7 loss to St. Marys last week.

Galbraith scored on runs of 96, 19, 30 and 51 yards.

Shan Heschke added a touchdown rushing and a touchdown passing for Brookville. He ran for six yards and threw for 53.

C-L (1-4) was limited to 164 yards of offense led by 17 carries for 63 yards by Gary Cooper. Dan Miller was 7 of 15 passing for 98 yards with three of the aerials going to Andy Wilson for 61 yards.

The 57 points are a school record for Brookville surpassing the 52 the Raiders put up against Meadville in 1999 (52-20), and the 57-point margin of victory is also a school record surpassing a 46-point win over Falls Creek in 1933 (46-0). But then again, this is the same school that scored 30 or more points just three times between 1974 and 1988.

APOLLO-RIDGE 35, A-C VALLEY 0

FOXBURG – Apollo-Ridge built a 28-0 halftime lead on its way to a 35-0 win over A-C Valley in a non-conference, interdistrict match-up Friday night at A-C Valley.

Mike Himes led the Falcons with 11 carries for 59 yards while Brad Rembold was 4-for-15 passing for 53 yards with an interception. He also ran 11 times for 18 yards.
