PORT ALLEGANY 21, OTTO-ELDRED 0

PORT ALLEGANY – Port Allegany clinched its first District 9 Class A playoff berth since 2005 with a 21-0 win over visiting Otto-Eldred Saturday afternoon.

Derick Morey paced the Gators (5-3 overall, 5-3 AML North) with 111 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 23 carries.

Seth Lowery also scored on an interception return for Port Allegany, which picked off four Otto-Eldred passes on the afternoon.

Mark Larson added six carries for 41 yards for Port, while Nick Nichols had 16 carries for 40 yards, 1 catch for 20 yards and two interceptions on defense. Bryce Healy had a team-high nine tackles while also picking off a pass to lead the Gator defense.

Otto-Eldred stats are pending. The Terrors dropped to 1-8 overall and 1-8 AML North with the loss.

COUDERSPORT 45, SMETHPORT 13

COUDERSPORT – Coudersport used a balanced scoring effort to knock off visiting Smethport 45-13 in the 100th meeting between the north tier rivals.

Six different Falcons scored and 14 different players handled the ball as Coudy improved to 7-1 overall and 7-1 AML North. It was Coudersport seventh straight win over Smethport, the first time that has happened in the series which the Hubbers (1-7, 1-7) still lead 57-39-4.

Dirk Cowburn was the lone Coudersport player to find the end zone twice scoring on a touchdown run and on a fumble return.

Nick Reddick and Colton Corey each added scoring runs, and Derek Burdick and Justen Kinder each caught touchdown passes from Boomer Wetzel, who was a perfect 5-for-5 on the night for 109 yards and the two touchdowns.

Cooper Bonczar added a field goal and four extra points for Coudy.

Smethport information is pending.

KEYSTONE 14, LEDGEMONT, OHIO 7

KNOX – Dan Reed was 15-for-26 passing for 162 yards and two touchdowns to lead Keystone to a 14-7 win over Ledgemont, Ohio, in non-conference action Friday night in Knox.

Mike Switzer had seven catches for 92 yards and a touchdown and Derek Swartfager six for 48 and a score for Keystone (4-4).

All 21 points came in the first quarter with Ledgemont jumping out to a 7-0 lead before Reed hit Switzer with a 25-yard TD pass and Swartfager with a 21-yard TD strike.

BROOKVILLE 33, PUNXSUTAWNEY 13

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Brookville retained the Route 36 trophy for the sixth straight year with a 33-13 win at Punxsutawney Friday night.

Joe Galbraith ran 19 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns, and Shane Heschke was 11-for-19 passing for 203 yards and a touchdown and an interception while running 10 times for 25 yards.

Brookville (5-3 overall, 2-2 D9 League) led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter thanks to a pair of 10-yard scoring runs by Galbraith, but Punxsy (0-8, 0-4) cut the lead to 14-13 late in the first half on a 10-yard Zach Smith touchdown run and a 12-yard scoring pass from Smith to Austin Furman.

But Heschke extended the Raiders lead to 21-13 at halftime when he hit Rocky Peace with a 22-yard scoring pass with 1:13 left in the half.

The Raiders then pulled made it 27-13 midway through the third quarter on a 2-yard D.J. Dennison run before Jacob Means’ 7-yard scamper early in the fourth quarter put the game away.

Brookville outgained Punxsy 458 yards to 175.

Smith was 5 of 15 passing for 70 yards and the touchdown while running six times for 25 yards and the score. Furman ran 11 times for 35 yards and caught five passes for 68 yards and the touchdown.

Peace had three catches for 68 yards and the touchdown for Brookville, while Alex Kerr added four grabs for 72 yards and intercepted a pass on defense.

CURWENSVILLE 14, RIDGWAY 2

CURWENSVILLE – David Kalgren threw for 145 yards and a touchdown while running for 60 and a score, as Curwensville kept its slim playoff hopes alive with a 14-2 win over visiting Ridgway Friday night.

Kalgren hit Jed Greslick with a 55-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter helping the Golden Tide (3-5 overall, 3-5 AML South) to a 6-2 halftime lead before his 1-yard touchdown run and subsequent 2-point conversion scamper midway through the third quarter set the final score.

Curwensville’s defense limited Ridgway (4-4, 4-4) to 175 yards of offense including just 19 passing. The Elkers lone score came late in the first quarter when Nate Eberly sacked Kalgren in the end zone for a safety.

Greslick added two catches for 70 yards and the score while running 11 times for 43 yards for Curwensville, which won for the third time in four games. Jesse Hoover added six catches for 67 yards for the Tide.

Elliott Pontious led Ridgway, which lost for the third time in four games, with 67 yards rushing on 21 carries and two catches for 10 yards. Andy Aiello chipped in with 13 carries for 79 yards.

Curwensville’s win muddies the D9 Class A playoff race a little bit more. Curwensville, which closes out the season with Sheffield Friday, is tied with Clarion a ½ game back of Elk County Catholic for the eighth and final playoff spot. ECC hosts Johnsonburg Saturday. Clarion actually holds the ninth spot ahead of Curwensville because of a tie-breaker.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 34, UNION 14

RIMERSBURG – Andy Wilson scored twice, and Clarion-Limestone recovered two fumbles (one Union, one of its own)  in the end zone for touchdowns on its way to a 34-14 win at Union Friday night.

Wilson scored on a 35-yard pass from Dan Miller and on a 12-yard run. He finished the night with seven carries for 82 yards and the touchdown and one catch for 35 yards and a score.

The Lions (2-6 overall, 2-4 KSAC), the top passing team in District 9 entering the game, went to the ground against Union running for a season-high 213 yards and two touchdowns while passing for just 49 yards. C-L entered the game with just 395 yards rushing and five touchdowns on the season.

Harry Cooper led the Lions ground game with 12 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown.

Colby Davis led all rushers with 16 carries for 158 yards and two scores. His 25-yard touchdown late in the first quarter gave Union a 6-0 lead.

C-L, though, tied the score when Brandon Love recovered a fumble in the end zone a 1:40 later.

The Lions then took a 12-6 halftime lead on a 13-yard Cooper run late in the second quarter.

Wilson’s 35-yard touchdown reception from Dan Miller, who was 3-for-13 passing for 48 yards with the TD and three interceptions, made it 20-6 at the end of three quarters before Wilson’s 12-yard scoring run upped the score to 27-6.

Davis made it 27-14 with a 52-yard scoring run, but Mike White recovered a Cooper fumble in the end zone to set the final score.

Trent Switzer had two interceptions and had 12 tackles on defense for Union.

KARNS CITY 63, A-C VALLEY 6

FOXBURG – Matt McConnell scored three touchdowns to help visiting Karns City hand A-C Valley its 21st straight loss 63-6 Friday night in Foxburg.

The victory secured at least a tie of the KSAC title for Karns City, which leads second-place Redbank Valley by one game with one to play. Even though the Gremlins (8-0 overall, 6-0 KSAC) beat Redbank Valley 23-0, they must still beat Union next week to claim the outright title because the KSAC doesn’t have a tiebreaker. It is the third straight KSAC title for the Gremlins, who shared the championship with Clarion and Clarion-Limestone in 2005 and won it outright last year.

McConnell scored on a 4-yard pass from Anthony Stimac, a 27-yard run and an 89-yard pass from Cameron Turner. His TDs came in the first, second and fourth quarters respectively.

Stimac threw two touchdown passes and also ran for a third for Karns City, which led 35-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Mike Himes scored A-C Valley’s lone touchdown with a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Karns City scored three defensive touchdowns in the game - a 37-yard fumble return by Earl Everetts, a 1-yard interception return by Turner and a 30-yard interception return by Josh Callender.

The 63 points were the most for Karns City since beating Union 63-7 in 2004.
