SHIPPENVILLE – Brockway sophomore quarterback Derek Buganza and DuBois’ senior running back Garrett Malmgren are the first RRR Roadhouse D9Sports.com District 9 Football Players of the Week for the 2008 season.

The duo share the inaugural award for the season after both put in superb performances in their teams’ opening-week victories.

Buganza rallied Brockway from a 21-8 deficit with two touchdown passes in the final five minutes including the game-winning touchdown toss with just 11 seconds left helping the Rovers shock upset-minded Smethport 22-21. Buganza’s last scoring toss came on his first pass after reentering the game following an injury to his thumb that required it to be tapped during a portion of the winning drive. For the contest, Buganza, directing Brockway’s new spread, no-huddle offense, was 25 of 38 passing for 257 yards and three touchdowns with all three scores coming in the final 12 minutes.

While Buganza was rallying Brockway, Malmgren was helping DuBois knock off archrival Clearfield 35-28. The senior ran 15 times for an eye-popping 300 yards and four touchdowns while adding one catch for 19 yards in the Beavers victory. He scored on runs of 52 and 23 yards in the first half and then bolted for scores of seven and 90 yards in the third quarter helping DuBois rally from an early 21-14 third-quarter deficit.

For Brockway, it marks the fourth time the school has been honored with a Player of the Week since the award was started in 2000 but the first time since the 2000 season when Aaron Cantafio took home the honor three times. Malmgren’s award is also the fourth time a DuBois player has been honored with the award and the first since Ryan Liddle earned the award in Week Five of 2005.

In addition to Buganza and Malmgren, 14 District 9 players appear on the RRR Roadhouse D9Sports.com District 9 Honor Roll this week.
