ST. MARYSThe St. Marys Flying Dutchmen opened their 2009 campaign in grand fashion rolling over visiting Bellefonte 51-12, avenging a last-minute loss to the Red Raiders a year ago.

This year the Dutchmen put any last minute heroics by Bellefonte out of everyone’s minds by halftime.  St. Marys racked up 267 total yards after two quarters en route to a 30-6 halftime lead.

Junior Fullback Kevin Hoy did most of the damage, rumbling and stumbling his way to 168 yards rushing on 24 carries and scoring twice, all in the first half.

St. Marys took the opening kickoff and drove the ball 70 yards in 11 plays, seven of them Hoy carries totaling 40 yards, culminating in a 20-yard touchdown pass from senior signal caller Greg Simchick to Brian Samick.  A two-point conversion attempt was no good, giving the Dutch a 6-0 lead 4:51 into the game.

After holding the Red Raider offense to one first down on their opening possession, St. Marys took over on the Bellefonte 45 yard line with 3:31 to play in the first quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, Hoy capped an 8-play, 45-yard drive by plunging over the left side of the offensive line from sux yards out to put the Dutch up 12-0.  Simchick then found Sean Sadosky open in the corner of the end zone for the two-point conversion putting St. Marys up 14-0 with 11:55 left to go in the half.

Following a three and out by the Red Raiders, St. Marys again took over in great field position at its own-45 yard line.  After getting a first down on two running plays, Simchick found Samick for the second time on the night, this time on a screen pass down the left side line good for a 48-yard score.  Samick then went straight up the middle for the two-point conversion, making the score 22-0, St. Marys.

Two plays after the ensuing kickoff, Red Raider Quarterback Ty Warner hit Greg Watson on a slant pass.  Watson broke a tackle and then won a foot race to the end zone, covering 84 yards.  The extra point was no good but Bellefonte had cut the lead to 22-6.

Unfortunately for Bellefonte, St. Marys went on a 7-play, 50-yard drive ending with Hoy’s second touchdown of the night, a 2-yard plunge with 4:55 to go before the half.  Hoy then added the two- point conversion giving St. Marys a 30-6 halftime lead.

St. Marys added three more touchdowns in the second half, as some of the younger players got some much need experience.

Brian Merritt highlighted the youth movement, scoring the game’s final touchdown on a 64-yard touchdown run.

Simchick finished the night 3 of 4 through the air for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Samick caught all 3 passes, good for 77 yards receiving.

St. Marys, now 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the MAC Nittany league, will play host to Lewistown next Friday at Dutch Country Stadium.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
