JOHNSONBURG – Trey DeCecchis’s 40-yard field goal attempt with 32 seconds left was no good allowing Sheffield to pick up its first AML crossover win since 2004 with a 7-6 win at Johnsonburg Friday night.

Sheffield (1-1 overall, 1-1 AML North) won its first AML game since a 22-14 win over Smethport Sept. 29, 2007, and its first AML crossover contest since beating Johnsonburg 29-0 Oct. 20, 2004.

The game was scoreless until the fourth quarter when Sheffield struck first on a Jimmy Hahn 5-yard run with 5:35 left in the game. Ian Davidson’s extra point gave the Wolverines a 7-0 lead.

Johnsonburg (1-1, 1-1) answered immediately when Vincent Vavala returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for an answering touchdown. But the extra point was no good.

The Rams had one more chance to win the game when it drove inside the Sheffield 10-yard line late in the game, but Sheffield’s Craig Fitch came up with a huge sack that knocked the Rams back to the 23-yard line.

As the score suggested, the game was a defensive showdown with Sheffield gaining 141 total yards and Johnsonburg 114. Both teams turned the ball over twice.

NOTES - Hahn and Hunter Smith led the Sheffield defense with 10 tackles each with Smith adding a sack. Fitch had eight stops and a sack.
