BUGANZA SETS STATE PASSING RECORD

DUKE CENTER – Brockway quarterback Derek Buganza threw for a state record 594 yards while tossing six touchdown passes in a 74-28 win at Otto-Eldred Friday night.

Unofficial numbers from DuBois Courier-Express/Tri-County Sunday, had Buganza 33 of 45 for the 594 yards and six scores while also throwing two interceptions.

Going into the game, the state record for passing yards in a game was 511 set by Downingtown East’s Pat Devlin in 2003.

The game was tied at 21 before Brockway scored late in the first half to take a 28-21 lead. The Rovers then blew the game away in the second half. Buganza threw for 328 yards in the first half alone.

Buganza threw two first-quarter TD passes of 30 yards to Zack Freemer and Chris Marshall. He threw three TD passes in the third quarter within a span of 2:05 to blow the game open, all of them to Mike Vervoort on plays of 32, 53 and 7 yards. Ryan Terwilliger then scored 1:31 after Buganza’s third TD pass, his second of the game, on a 3-yard run.

The Rovers, who led 53-21 going into the fourth quarter, got one more TD pass from Buganza to Vervoort covering 12 yards with 11:30 on the clock. Vervoort caught nine passes for 175 yards to go along with his four TD grabs. Freemer made six catches for 154 yards, Jacob Shaffer made 10 catches for 148 yards and Marshall had five receptions for 91 yards.

The Rovers added two more scores late in the game on Kyle Braun’s 41-yard run and Tom Vervoort’s 6-yard run.

Otto-Eldred turned the ball over eight times. Quarterback Noah Colbert threw three TD passes of 5, 85 and 52 yards respectively to Drew Coscia, Justin Bird on Zach Williams, but he also threw four interceptions. Coscia rushed for 184 yards on 20 carries.
