ST. MARYS – The St. Marys Dutchmen returned home and reestablished their winning ways by shutting out the Penns Valley Rams 34-0 at Dutch Country Stadium on Homecoming Friday night in St. Marys.

For the second consecutive week the Dutchmen defense was superb.  The Rams could only muster a mere 64 yards of total offense.  Last week in the loss to Huntington, the Dutch only allowed 97 yards.

Kevin Hoy did all the damage for St. Marys who only threw the ball once on then night.  Hoy gained 149 yards on 18 carries and scored 4 touchdowns.  Kyle Schneider added 47 yards and Shawn Kronenwetter gained 36 on the ground.

St. Marys got the ball to begin the game for the fifth straight time this season.  But the Dutch could do nothing with it going three and out.

Penns Valley didn’t fare much better.  The Rams picked up a first down but were then forced to punt after a penalty and a sack.

St. Marys took over on its own 16-yard line.  The Dutchmen started a methodical drive from there, going 84 yards on 15 plays while running out the remainder of the first quarter.  Hoy scored his first of four touchdowns on the first play of the second quarter to put St. Marys up 7-0 after Scott Barbers PAT was good.

Penns Valley again could do nothing offensively and was forced to punt.  Dutchmen return man Justin Quiggle came up with a 32-yard return putting St. Marys in business at the Rams 36-yard line.  Another heavy dose of Hoy resulted in a 6-play drive in which Hoy finished off with a bulldozer-like scoring run from 10 yards out.  Barber’s kick was again true and St. Marys led 14-0 going into halftime.

Penns Valley got the ball to begin to start the second half but was forced to punt again.

St. Marys began its first drive of the second half on its own 19-yard line.  This time though, the Dutch scored quickly when Hoy busted off a 60-yard scoring run on the drive’s third play to put St. Marys up 20-0.

The Rams again struggled on their next possession.  This time, following another penalty and a sack, they were forced to punt from deep in their own territory.  Punter Kody Bjalme couldn’t handle the snap and was dropped at the Penns Valley 5-yard line.

From there St. Marys scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Greg Simchick to extend their lead to 27-0.

St. Marys tacked on one more score by Hoy to make it 34-0.

Leading the offense for Penns Valley was Bjalme with 25 yards on 13 carries.  Sam Snyder completed 2 of 6 passes for 26 yards.

St. Marys, (4-1, 3-1 MAC), begins a stretch of four consecutive road games next week as they travel to Tyrone to take on the Eagles.

Game Notes: St. Marys ran 54 plays, 53 of them running plays…The Rams gained only 13 yards in the second half…Penns Valley fumbled 13 times on the night, losing 5 of them…All State Linebacker Sean Sadosky had 10 tackles, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery…Jayna Cunningham was named 2009 Homecoming Queen.
