PHILIPSBURG - On what has become the normal this year on Friday nights for high school football, the St. Marys Flying Dutchmen improved their record to 6-2 with a 19-6 victory over the Philipsburg-Osceola Mounties on a rainy and muddy Memorial Field in Philipsburg.

The only thing the weather didn’t dampen was the Dutchmen offense.  Behind the running of Kevin Hoy and Kyle Schneider, St. Marys churned out 276 of their 302 yards on the ground.  Hoy gained 168 yards on 21 carries and scored once.  Schneider also scored once and carried the ball 13 times and for 85 yards.

St. Marys won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.  The Dutch defense set the tone for the night forcing a punt.  With the weather conditions being windy and wet, the Mounties kicked from their own 45-yard line, but the punt went backwards, with St. Marys ending up with the ball at the Philipsburg 40-yard line.

Starting from there, Hoy gained 8 and 15 yards on consecutive runs to pick up a first down at the Mounties 17.  Greg Simchick found Justin Quiggle open on a curl route in the right flat and Quiggle dragged a defender down to the 5-yard line.

Two plays later, Simchick hit tight end Sean Sadosky over the middle for the touchdown.  Scott Barber’s extra point attempt was blocked by Jeremy Pollick, but the Dutchmen were up 6-0 with 4:55 to go in the first quarter.

St. Marys forced another Philipsburg punt and took over at its own 29-yard line.  After a couple of first downs, Hoy found a hole off the left side of the line and darted 39 yards into the end zone on the second play of the second quarter.  The two-point conversion attempt failed making the score 12-0 in favor of the Dutchmen.

With 2:35 to go before halftime, the Mounties got a big play from their quarterback Mike Marcinko to get them back into the game.

Marcinko called his own number as he ran left, found a seam and scampered 65 yards for the score.  The extra point was wide right but the Mounties had cut the lead to 12-6 going into the locker room at halftime.

St. Marys took the second half kickoff and marched 67 yards on only five plays with Schneider scoring from 2 yards out to cap off the drive.  Barber’s PAT was true and the Dutchmen opened up a 19-6 lead.

The Dutchmen controlled the line of scrimmage and the game the rest of the way, as they picked up their sixth win of the season.

Simchick finished the night 3 of 5 for 26 yards and a touchdown.  Quiggle, Sadosky and Darren Lyon all caught a pass for St. Marys.

Marcinko led the Mounties offensively.  He rushed for 72 yards on 4 carries and scored the lone touchdown.  He also threw for 55 yards, completing 5 of 12 while throwing one interception.  Steve Rusnick pitched in 53 yards on 9 carries while Zack Czap carried 10 times for 30 yards.

St. Marys takes to the road one last time next week when they travel to Central Martinsburg.

Game notes: St. Marys win, coupled with the Bradford Owls 40-6 loss to Northeast, puts St. Marys back in the running for the number one seed in Class AAA…Hoy picked up his 7th 100 yard performance of the year…The Dutchmen won the turnover battle, coming up with an interception and a fumble recovery without turning the ball over themselves… Following a sloppy 9 penalty night on Monday, the Dutchmen were only flagged twice tonight.
