St. Marys – The Clearfield Bisons jumped out to a 26-7 lead early in the third quarter and then held off a furious St. Marys comeback to pull out a 32-27 victory and advance to next Friday nights District 9 Class AAA title game.

With all four of the AAA teams still able to secure a playoff spot entering Friday night, it will be Clearfield and Punxsutawney, 29-15 winners over Brookville, who will meet next week. Bradford lost to Corry eliminating the Owls.

Clearfield opened the scoring just 90 seconds into the game. St. Marys took the opening kickoff and could do nothing with it and were forced to punt after three plays. The snap went over punter Greg Simchick’s head. He picked the ball up at the goal line and attempted to punt. The kick was blocked and Clearfield’s Derek Morgan recovered it the endzone for the score. Chad Zurat’s extra point was good and the Bison’s led 7-0.

St. Marys would then control the ball the rest of the first quarter, driving deep into Clearfield territory only to turn the ball over on downs.

The Bisons would then give the ball back thanks to a fumble recovery by Justin Quiggle at the Clearfield 45.

St. Marys would give it right back two plays later as Chad Zurat intercepted a Simchick pass. Two plays later, Bison quarterback Curtis Frye found Trey Campman over the middle and Campman raced 46 yards for the touchdown. Zurat’s kick was good again, putting the Bisons up 14-0.

St. Marys would cut the lead to seven on their next possession. Kevin Hoy broke free up the middle for an 18 yard touchdown run, capping an 18 play drive. Scott Barber’s PAT was true, cutting the lead to 14-7.

Clearfield though would find the endzone again before halftime. With 1:24 remaining in the half, they took over on their own 31 yard line. It took them six plays to cover the 69 yards. The drive culminated in a Frye to Morgan 14 yard pitch and catch. Zurat’s kick missed wide right, but Clearfield led 20-7 at the break.

Clearfield took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 76 yards in 7 plays. The big play of the drive was Morgan’s 48 yard touchdown run. Zurat’s kick was blocked by Sean Sadosky to make the score 26-7 with 7:20 to go in the third quarter.

St. Marys needed to answer and Hoy was just the man to do it. On the fifth play of the Dutchmen’s next drive, Hoy bounced off three tackles, broke right and scampered 45 yards to cut the lead to 26-13.

The Dutch defense dug in and forced the Bisons to punt.

Hoy would go to work again. Carrying the ball 6 times on the ensuing drive, Hoy would score from 5 yards out on the second play of the fourth quarter, cutting the lead down to six, 26-20.

Clearfield would answer though with what ended up being the deciding score. The Bison’s took the kick and drove the length of the field. Frye hit Campman for the duo’s second score of the night, this time from 14 yards out to give the Bison’s a 32-20 lead with 7:21 to play.

St. Marys would score once more on a 2 yard run by Kyle Schneider with 1:53 to go to pull within five, 32-27.

St. Marys onside kick would fail and Clearfield was able to run out the clock and advance to the AAA title game.

Hoy finished the night with 236 yards on 36 carries and scored 3 touchdowns. Schneider ran for 105 yards on 21 and scored once.

Frye completed 10 of 12 passes good for 154 yards and 3 touchdowns. Morgan gained 100 yards on 11 carries and scored a touchdown.
