ST. MARYS 25, INDIAN VALLEY 7

LEWISTOWN – Kevin Hoy ran for 219 yards and two touchdowns to help St. Marys to a 25-7 win at Indian Valley Monday night in a game postponed from Friday because of weather issues.

Hoy ran the ball 25 times including scoring runs of 5 and 15 yards, while Kyle Schneider added 84 yards rushing and a touchdown on eight carries. Schneider started the scoring for the Dutchmen with a 55-yard run 51 seconds into the game, and he added one catch for 12 yards Greg Simchick was almost perfect for St. Marys going 8 of 9 passing for 81 yards including a 26-yard touchdown pass to Darren Lyon. Justin Quiggle had an interception on defense for St. Marys.

Indian Valley’s lone score came on a 7-yard pass from Will Long to Morgan Barger. Long finished 11 of 19 passing for 113 yards, one touchdown and one interception and also ran the ball eight times for a team-high 64 yards.  

CLEARFIELD 42, PENNS VALLEY 6

SPRING MILLS – Curtis Frye ran 14 times for 95 yards and four touchdowns and went 5 of 9 passing for 86 yards to lead Clearfield to a 42-6 win at Penns Valley Monday night in a game postponed from Friday because of weather.

Frye scored on a pair of 1-yard runs, on a 2-yard run and on a 12-yard scamper. Derek Morgan added a 12-yard touchdown run for the Bisons while rushing for 77 yards on 15 carries, and Beau Swales chipped in 11 carries for 54 yards and a score. Trey Campman added three catches for 63 yards.

Clearfield scored 29 points in the second quarter and led 35-0 at halftime.

SHEFFIELD 18, SMETHPORT 7

SHEFFIELD – Jasper Rentas’ school-record 97-yard touchdown run on the second possession of the game helped set the tone for an 18-7 Sheffield win over visiting Smethport Saturday afternoon.

Thanks to the long run, Rentas finished with a game-high 106 yards rushing on just two carries, while Robert Howell added a pair of touchdown for the Wolverines (2-5 overall, 2-5 AML North).

Howell caught a 16-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter from Craig Fitch and then scored on a 52-yard run with just three second left in the half to give the Wolverines an 18-0 halftime lead. Howell finished with three carries for 73 yards and two catches for 37 yards. Fitch was 2 of 3 for 37 yards and the touchdown. Pat Rudolph (13 tackles, 1 fumble recovery) and Drew Markey (12 tackles, 1 fumble recovery) led the defense for Sheffield. Fitch chipped in with nine stops.

Kolin Strawcutter scored Smethport’s lone touchdown on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter. The loss drops the Hubbers to 0-7 on the year.

KANE 7, RIDGWAY 0

KANE – Alex Anderson’s 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was all Kane needed to secure a 7-0 win over Ridgway in AML South play Friday night in Kane.

Kane (5-2 overall, 5-2 AML South), which remained in a first-place tie for the division lead with Brockway and Curwensville, twice stopped Ridgway (2-5, 2-5) inside the Wolves 40-yard line after the touchdown to secure the victory.

Arie Paup led the Wolves with 89 yards rushing on 19 carries, while Anderson was 5 of 9 passing for 66 yards. Dylan Eckstrom had three grabs for 45 yards. Marty Nicklas paced the Kane defense with 10 tackles, including four sacks. Robert Kumher added 13 tackles. Eckstrom, Robert Leonard and Logan Depto each picked off a pass for the Wolves as well and Leonard recovered a fumble.

COUDERSPORT 33, OTTO-ELDRED 0

DUKE CENTER – Coudersport used a balanced offensive effort to get a 33-0 win at Otto-Eldred Friday night.

Five different Falcons found the end zone, including four on rushing touchdowns, and 10 different Coudersport players touched the ball on offense.

Dirk Cowburn led the way rushing seven times for 51 yards and a score while adding two catches for 23 yards. Tim McCusker chipped in with 45 yards rushing and a touchdown on 14 carries while also going 3 of 4 passing the ball for 66 yards and a score. Mitch Freeman (37 yards rushing) and Creighton Hayes (29 yards rushing) also found the end zone on the ground for the Falcons, while Jordan Barnett’s lone catch was a 43-yard touchdown pass from McCusker, who also ran for a 2-point conversion. McCusker added an interception and a fumble recovery on defense, and Kyle Freeman recovered three fumbles and made two tackles for Coudy.

ERIE STRONG VINCENT 42, BRADFORD 0

BRADFORD – Erie Strong Vincent left no doubt who the best team in District 10 Region 6 is after smacking Bradford right in the mouth 42-0 Friday night in Bradford in a showdown of the only two teams in the Region with unbeaten marks going into the game.

Strong Vincent (5-2 overall, 3-0 D10 Region 6) won despite not having the services of starting quarterback Steve Uplinger, who missed the game with an illness.

But the Colonels didn’t need Uplinger, as Brandon Akins-Jones carried the ball 15 times for 131 yards and a touchdowns and Denzel Jones, Uplinger’s replacement, rushed for 33 yards and two scores. Emari Tangle also scored twice for Strong Vincent.

Strong Vincent’s defense was also stout limiting Bradford’s Pat Pascarella to 43 yards rushing on 13 carries and Bradford (6-1, 2-1) to 94 yards of total offense.  

BROCKWAY 41, JOHNSONBURG 20

JOHNSONBURG – Derek Buganza threw for 264 touchdowns and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores to lead Brockway to a 41-20 win at Johnsonburg Friday night and keep the Rovers in a first-place tie in the AML South with Kane and Curwensville.

Buganza was 17 of 27 passing and also added six carries for 20 yards. Mike Vervoort caught five passes for 86 yards and a touchdown, and Jake Shaffer added seven grabs for 96 yards for Brockway (5-2 overall, 5-2 AML North). Ryan Terwilliger chipped in a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown and had four carries for 8 yards and two grabs for 46 yards. Ethan Gillespie added two interceptions on defense for the Rovers.

Andrew Nortum led Johnsonburg with 196 yards passing on 11 of 31 with one touchdown while also throwing four picks. He also ran for a touchdown and gained 45 yards on 15 carries. Joe Holmberg had four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown and added two carries for 14 yards for the Rams (3-4, 3-4), while Jesse Wolfe had six grabs for 89 yards.  

CHESTNUT RIDGE 31, DUBOIS 25, OT

DUBOIS – Justin Taylor scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in overtime to lift Chestnut Ridge to a 31-25 win at DuBois Friday night.

DuBois forced overtime in dramatic fashion when Shawn Newpher scored on a 4-yard run with 34 seconds left in regulation and Josh Means hit John Kane with the 2-point conversion pass to knot the contest at 25.

Chestnut Ridge had taken a 25-17 lead on a 4-yard Brad Hengst touchdown run with 2:46 left in regulation, but DuBois blocked the extra point.

The Lions led 19-10 at halftime before Newpher, who ran 21 times for 76 yards and caught four passes for 75 yards, scored on a 15-yard pass from Means to cut the lead to 19-17.

Means added a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to give the Beavers a 7-6 lead at the end of one. He ran for 153 yards on 16 carries and was 11 of 18 passing for 147 yards and the score while also throwing a pick.

Jude Donatelli ran 21 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns to lead Chestnut Ridge.

CURWENSVILLE 28, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 8

ST. MARYS – On a field so wet that St. Marys firemen were pumping water off of it before the game, Curwensville’s Jed Greslick ran 21 times for 100 yards and caught two passes for 40 yards including an 8-yard score to lead the Golden Tide to a 28-8 win over Elk County Catholic at St. Marys’ Dutch Country Stadium.

Sam Gardner, who threw the scoring pass to Greslick, added a 10-yard touchdown toss to Shae Best and ran for a 5-yard score. He finished the night 5 of 6 passing for 80 yards while running four times for three yards. Alex Holland also found the end zone for Curwensville.

Kyle Gerber ran 11 times for 70 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown with just over three minutes to play, to lead ECC. District 9’s leading rusher Ricky Pearsall carried the ball just five times for 12 yards, and ECC was held to 92 yards of total offense.

UNION 58, A-C VALLEY 6

FOXBURG – Behind three touchdowns and 165 yards of offense by Zach Traister, Union scored its most points in 43 years in a 58-6 win at A-C Valley Friday night.

Traister, who returned a kickoff 84 yards, also scored on runs of 17 and 57 yards while helping Union to its highest point total since a 59-13 win over Moniteau in 1966, Union’s last unbeaten season at 8-0.

Quarterback Trent Corle added a perfect night going 11-for-11 passing for 174 yards and three touchdowns, while Taylor Smith caught four passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a score.

A-C Valley did score its first first-half touchdown of the season when Michael Orrvick found pay dirt on a 12-yard run.

KEYSTONE 43, CLARION-LIMESTONE 20

STRATTANVILLE - Zach Smith and Dan Reed had big nights on the ground for Keystone as the Panthers clinched a Class A playoff spot with a 43-20 win at Clarion-Limestone Friday night.

Smith ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns, while Reed amassed 125 yards and scored three times. Reed also connected with Brett Zuck for a 19-yard touchdown pass.

Jonathan Pezzuti hauled in two touchdown passes for the Lions, while also returning an interception for a touchdown.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 6, REDBANK VALLEY 0

PUNXSUTAWNEY - A touchdown pass midway through the first quarter proved to be enough for the Chucks as Punxsutawney defeated Redbank Valley 6-0 Friday night.

On the Chucks fifth play from scrimmage, Logan Weaver hooked up with Braedon Pennington on a 71-yard touchdown pass with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter.

The Punxsutawney defense held the lead by limiting Redbank Valley to just 43 yards of offense in the first half.

The Bulldogs had the ball as deep as the Punxsy 9-yard line in the fourth quarter, but a sack and two Redbank Valley penalties left the Bulldogs with a third-and-long before Zak Dickey intercepted a Brandon Bain pass. Pennington and Weaver also intercepted a Bain pass.

The six points is the fewest points scored in a win by a District 9 team since Union defeated Cambridge Springs 6-0 in Week 1 of the 2006 season.
