RENOVO – Twenty-one District 9 football players have been named All-state performers by the Pennsylvania Football News including six first-team selections, six second-team choices and nine third-team honorees.

District 9 Class A champion Clarion leads the way with four selections including first-team Class A offensive athlete Bubba Rue, who was the CHAMP D9Sports.com District 9 MVP. Class AA champion Karns City has three selections led by Class AA first-team defensive lineman Jake Wagner, while Keystone also has three selections including first-team Class A wide receiver Brett Zuck.

The remaining first-team choices include Brockway’s Mike Vervoort (Class AA wide receiver), Moniteau’s Jacob Boy (Class AA linebacker) and Elk County Catholic’s David Bojalad (Class A punter).

The second-team selections are Clearfield’s Trey Campman (Class AAA wide receiver), Punxsutawney’s Braedon Pennington (Class AAA defensive back), St. Marys’ Sean Sadosky (Class AAA linebacker), Brockway’s Derek Buganza (Class AA quarterback), Kane’s Arie Paup (2nd team Class AA defensive athlete) and Keystone’s Jordan Siegel (Class A offensive line).

Earning third-team honors are Bradford’s Cody Nuzzo (Class AAA place kicker), Kane’s Kyle Engelken (Class AA offensive line), Karns City’s Tylar Parker (Class AA offensive line), Brookville’s Madison Shobert (Class AA offensive line), Karns City’s Brandon Collier (Class AA defensive back), Keystone’s Dan Reed (Class A quarterback) and a trio of Clarion defensive players including defensive back Cody Renninger, defensive lineman T.J. Armstrong and linebacker Kevin Grejda.

Of the District 9 selections, four are underclassmen including three juniors – Vervoort, Buganza and Bojalad – and one freshman – Armstrong. Armstrong was one of only two freshmen named all-state by PFN and the only one at a non-special teams’ position. North Star punter Tony Strasiser was a third-team Class AA choice.

NOTES – Buganza was a second-team choice despite his state-record setting passing performance (3,824 yards) mainly because his competition was Lancaster Catholic’s Kyle Smith, who was named the PFN’s Mister Football in Pennsylvania after leading his team to a state title in a year in which he broke the state record for touchdown passes in a season with 50. The previous mark of 49 was set by Clearfield’s Chad Kroell in 1994. Smith also set the Pennsylvania career touchdown pass mark with 118 and the Pennsylvania career passing yardage mark with 8,543 yards, although that record could be broken by Buganza next year as he has 6,747 yards after two seasons … Four of the D9 selections came from Class AAA, nine from Class AA and eight from Class A. The KSAC had the most selections with 13 followed by the AML with five … A complete listing of the PFN All-State teams including honorable mention choices can be found here.
