SHEFFIELD – The visiting
Curwensville Golden Tide racked up 10 touchdowns and 374
yards of offense in a 72-18 thrashing of Sheffield
Saturday afternoon. Seven different Tide players found
the end zone with Shane Hoover, Alex Holland and Shea
Best each scoring two touchdowns. Holland rushed for 136 yards on 21
carries with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter
and a 71-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter.
Hoover had a 37-yard punt return for the game’s first
points. Kalil Slaughter scored all three of
Sheffield’s touchdowns on runs of 77 and 70 yards and a
23-yard TD reception from quarterback Ike Nearing. He
finished the game with 106 yards rushing on nine carries
and also caught two passes for 23 yards. He also picked
off a pass on defense. Curwensville (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML
South) led 42-6 at halftime and outgained Sheffield
(0-2, 0-2 AML North) 374-171. The 72 points were the
most by the Golden Tide since they beat Ridgway 74-28
Sept. 25, 2004, 65 games ago, while the 72 points are
the most ever allowed by Sheffield. PORT ALLEGANY – Visiting Brockway
piled up 619 yards of offense and most of its didn’t
come from the arm of high-flying quarterback Derek
Buganza in a 49-34 win at Port Allegany Saturday
afternoon. The Rovers (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML
South) amassed 373 yards rushing and put two running
backs over 100 yards with Tom Vervoort getting exactly
100 on 15 carries and Mike Vervoort picking up a
career-high 193 yards and three touchdowns on 14
carries. He scored all of his touchdowns in the second
half on runs of 3, 8 and 45 yards. The last two broke up
a close game that saw the Rovers leading 35-34 going
into the fourth quarter. Buganza did complete 19 of 32
passes for 247 yards with a 40-yard touchdown pass to
Kyle Bran while also scoring on a 1-yard run. Braun
caught nine passes for 119 yards and the score. Matt Bodamer paced Port Allegany
(1-1, 1-1 AML North) combined for 328 yards of total
offense. He was 13 of 23 passing for 230 yards, three
touchdowns and two interceptions while also running 11
times for 98 yards and a touchdown. Camrin Stuckey
caught five passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Bodamer’s 4-yard touchdown pass with 8:45 left in the
fourth quarter made it 35-34 Brockway, but the Gators
two-point conversion failed.
JOHNSONBURG 16, CAMERON COUNTY 12 JOHNSONBURG – Quarterback Andrew
Nortum’s 2-yard run with 1:03 left in the game lifted
Johnsonburg to a 16-12 win over visiting Cameron County
Friday night. It was the only offensive touchdown
for the Rams, who were outgained 311-149, but Mitchell
Holmberg returned an 81-yard kickoff return gave
Johnsonburg (1-1 overall, 1-1 AML South) its first score
of the game. Cameron County (0-2, 0-2 AML North)
couldn’t overcome five turnovers. The Red Raiders got
two touchdown runs from Jason Blose including a 33-yard
first-quarter scoring run and a 4-yard run with 4:55
left in the game that gave Cameron County the lead. Blose led the Red Raiders with 18
carries for 106 yards and the two scores with Andrew
Fragale adding 127 yards on just 11 attempts. For Johnsonburg, Nortum completed 7
of 18 passes for 85 yards, Max Zimmerman led the Rams
with 37 yards rushing. KANE – Kory Majot’s touchdown run
in the second half lifted Coudersport to a 9-6 win over
homestanding Kane Friday night. The Falcons (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML
North) trailed 6-0 at halftime despite turning the ball
over three times in the half before taking the lead on
Majot’s score and then adding a safety. Kane (1-1, 1-1 AML South) took the
6-0 lead on a Pat Anderson touchdown run. It was a defensive slugfest with
Kane outgaining Coudersport 173-166 with most of the
yards for both teams coming on the ground. Majot led the Falcons with seven
carries for 55 yards and one catch for 21, while Logan
Depot had 17 carries for 76 yards for Kane and Pat
Anderson seven for 56 and the score. Creighton Hayes (9 tackles, 1
sack), Jason Gibson (8 tackles, 1 sack) and Alexander
Hutcheson (3 tackles, 1 interception) led the Coudy
defense with Josh Kibble (10 tackles) Sloan Moore (9
tackles) and Ricky Harp (3 tackles, 1 interception), one
of the East Forest members of Kane’s team, pacing the
Wolves defense. HYDE – Derek Morgan ran 13 times
for 163 yards and three touchdowns, including a 94-yard
run in the second quarter, to help Clearfield to a 49-14
win over visiting Bald Eagle Friday night. Beau Swales added a pair of
touchdown runs and ran six times for 54 yards, while
Curtis Frye hit Derek Danver with a 17-yarrd touchdown
pass to get the scoring started for the Bisons (2-0)
with David Hoover finishing the Clearfield scoring with
a 28-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Frye was 6 of 11 passing for 108
yards and the score with Danver catching four balls for
63 yards. PUNXSUTAWNEY – Punxsutawney scored
its most points in 82 years while handing A-C Valley its
District 9-record 42nd straight loss to a
62-0 win over the visiting Falcons Friday night. The 62 tallies are the most by a
Chucks’ squad since Punxsy beat Franklin 73-6 in 1928
and are the second most in school history. Punxsutawney outgained A-C Valley
306 yards to 11 on the game including 211 to one on the
ground. Logan Weaver threw three touchdowns
passes while going 6-for-8 despite entering the game
questionable because of an elbow injury. Ben Blazavich
added a pair of touchdown runs on just three carries and
also intercepted a pass on defense, while Jamie Bush
scored twice while running for a team-high 67 yards on
seven carries. Duell Thompson caught two of Weaver’s
scoring passes.
RIMERSBURG – Jason Amy and Noah Marvin combined for four
touchdowns to help Saegertown run past Union 44-16
Friday night in Rimersburg.
Amy, who rushed for 54 yards, scored on a touchdown runs
of two and six yards, and Marvin threw a 59-yard
touchdown pass and also added a 1-yard scoring run to
help the Panthers (2-0) rack up 505 yards of total
offense.
Taylor Smith and Brody Shick each threw touchdown passes
for Union with Smith hitting Brody Pollock with an
11-yard score and Shick finding Swaboda with a 31-yard
touchdown pass.
Mikey Harris and Austin Davis combined to rush for 132
for Union (0-2) with Harris rushing 10 times for 67
yards and Davis 14 for 65.
The game was the first for the Golden Knights since the
death of head coach Al Pryor last Saturday.
BRADFORD – Bradford exploded for 28 fourth-quarter
points en route to a 49-28 win over Meadville Friday.
With the game tied at 21
early in the fourth quarter, Cody Coats hit split end
Andrew Kloss with a 73-yard touchdown pass to put
Bradford ahead 28-21.
The Owls
were able to stay in the game early thanks to kickoff
returns for scores by Pascarella and Coats. Pascarella was once again the stat
star for the Owls rushing for 118 yards and a touchdown
while scoring twice. Coats finished the right throwing
for a score, rushing for a score and returning the
kickoff 80 yards for a score, while Havers had 17
carries for 84 yards and a touchdown. Bradford will travel to Erie next
Saturday for a matchup with winless Erie Central Tech. SMETHPORT – Smethport’s Jesse
Cheatle got his first career coaching victory thanks to
a 43-0 Hubber win over visiting Ridgway Friday night. The 43 points were the most scored
by Smethport in 48 games since a 49-12 win over Kane
Oct. 29, 2004, and it was the Hubbers first shutout in
54 games since a 29-0 win over Sheffield Sept. 17, 2004. Kevin Lord ran for 87 yards,
including a 34-yard touchdown, for Smethport, while Ryan
Wells had 13 carries for 69 yards and scored on a
65-yard interception return. Brian Zetwick added six
carries for 46 yards and a touchdown. His scored with
3:31 left in the first quarter from 16 yards out started
the onslaught.
DUBOIS – Mark Kulinski threw four touchdown passes to
lead visiting Oil City to a 35-21 win over DuBois Friday
night.
Kulinski, who threw for 326 yards on 20 of 36 including
an interception, threw a pair of first-half touchdowns
giving the Oilers (2-0 overall, 1-0 D10 Region 5) a 13-0
halftime lead. He then tossed two more in the fourth
quarter including an 18-yard scoring pass to Notre Dame
recruit Ben Koyak, a tight end.
DuBois (0-2, 0-1) got a 1-yard Sean Sleigh touchdown run
in the third quarter and then scored twice in the fourth
quarter – one on a 58-yard pass from Sleigh to John Kane
and again late when backup QB Brian Kane hit Jared
Baummer with a 20-yard scoring toss.
Sleigh was 6 of 18 passing for 168 yards and the score
and ran 11 times for four yards, while Shawn Newpher ran
18 times for 108 yards and caught one pass for seven
yards. Max Hine has two catches for 65 yards. Kane had
the one 58-yard catch and also picked off a pass on
defense.
Koyak had eight catches for 135 yards and the score for
Oil City, while Dallas Williams had five catches for 81
yards and two touchdowns helping the Oilers outgain
DuBois 519-313.
ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 56, OTTO-ELDRED 16
ST. MARYS – Ricky Pearsall ran for 158 yards and two
touchdowns on just nine carries and also returned the
opening second-half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to
help Elk County Catholic to a 56-16 win over visiting
Otto-Eldred Friday night.
Pearsall scored on runs of 47 and 36 yards in the first
half helping the Crusaders (2-0 overall, 2-0 AML South)
build a 43-0 halftime lead and then made it 50-0 when he
returned the second-half kickoff, his second kickoff
return for a touchdown in as many weeks.
Cole Gerber added a pair of short touchdown runs and had
13 yards rushing for ECC, while David Bojalad, who had
three catches for 58 yards, caught a 29-yard scoring
pass from Kyle Schneider and also kicked four extra
points. Sam Schneider and Joe McLaughlin also added
scoring runs for the Crusaders, who added a safety on
the scoreboard as well when an Otto punt snap went
through the end zone.
Clay Pinner scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns
for the Terrors (0-2, 0-2 AML North) and ran 16 times
for 67 yards while completing 2 of 3 passes for 34
yards. |
