PITTSBURGH – Kyle Armagost accounted for 390 yards and five touchdowns to lead Moniteau to its first-ever PIAA playoff win, 39-12, over Oliver Friday night at Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh.

The senior quarter was 12 of 25 passing for 264 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 126 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

Three of Armagost’s scoring tosses went to senior wide receiver Ethan Pry, who had seven catches for 153 yards.

Oliver (3-8) used a defensive touchdown – a 2-yard Ronnie Ogeletree fumble return –  to jump out to a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter before Moniteau (12-0) scored 24 points in the second quarter on four Armagost touchdown passes including three in the final 3:04 of the half.

The Warriors tied the game on a 10-yard Armagost to Pry touchdown pass 7:18 before halftime.

Then Moniteau broke the game open with the three scores in just over three minutes.

Armagost hit Pry with a 44-yard touchdown pass at the 3:04 mark then hit Pry again, this time from 40 yards out, with 1:28 to play before halftime. Finally, on the final play of the half, Armagost found Joey Deal with a 155-yard scoring pass to make it 24-8.

Oliver tried to rally in the third quarter cutting the deficit to 24-12 on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Shakeem Cox to Damarai Kirk, but a 2-yard Armagost run and a 10-yard Dustin Geagan run finished off the scoring. Armagost added a 2-point conversion run after his touchdown and then kicked the extra point following Geagan’s run.

The 264 passing yards puts Armagost over 2,000 on the season with 2,005 making him the first District 9 quarterback to throw for 2,000 yards in a season and rush for 1,000 (1,276). He has 22 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing scores on the season.

Moniteau will face the winner of Saturday’s WPIAL championship game between Jeannette and Aliquippa in the PIAA quarterfinals next week.

NOTES – The Warriors became the seventh District 9 team to win in its PIAA playoff debut and the first since Kane beat Mercyhurst Prep 12-7 in Class A in 2007. The win also improves District 9 Class AA teams to 5-20 all time in PIAA playoff games but marked the second year in a row a D9 Class AA team has beaten Oliver in the first round. Last year, Brockway toppled the Bears 44-14.
