Karl Lightner rushed for 178 yards and 3 TDs in Smethport's loss to Curwensville Alex Holland ran for 312 yards and 4 touchdowns in Curwensville's win over Smethport Mitchell Vallone accounted for all three ECC TDs (1 passing, 1 rushing, 1 int return) in the win over Cameron.

OLEAN (N.Y.) 47, BRADFORD 18

OLEAN, N.Y. – Maleke Fuentes ran for 192 yards and two touchdowns and Patrick Scholla threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead Olean (N.Y.) to a season-opening 47-18 win over visiting Bradford Sunday afternoon.

Bradford (0-1) got a pair of touchdown runs from Dan Rinfrette, who scored on runs of eight and 29 yards while rushing 12 times for 93 yards. Zach Britton added 16 carries for 87 yards including a 35-yard touchdown run for the Owls.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday night but was moved to Sunday because of weather.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 19, CAMERON COUNTY 6

ST. MARYS – Mitchell Vallone accounted for all three Elk County Catholic touchdowns, as the Crusaders topped Cameron County 19-6 in a weather-delayed season opener Saturday night at Dutch Country Stadium in St. Marys.

Vallone threw for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown and returned an interception 40 yards for a score in a game that was delayed in the middle because of lighting.

Joe McLaughlin caught the scoring pass from Vallone, who was 3-for-10 passing for 67 yards while rushing for five yards on eight carries. McLaughlin had two catches for 55 yards and also made six tackles on defense. Cole Gerber accounted for the majority of the Crusaders 236 yards on the ground rushing 21 times for 136 yards. He also made seven tackles on defense.

CURWENSVILLE 53, SMETHPORT 33

SMETHPORT – Despite going over the half-century mark on the scoreboard, the Curwensville Golden Tide trailed in the early minutes of the fourth quarter. Four touchdowns later — three of them on Alex Holland runs of 65, 91 and 54 yards — the Golden Tide escaped Smethport with a 53-33 win.

Curwensville trailed 33-27 when Hubbers quarterback Kevin Lord scored his second touchdown of the game on an 18-yard. Holland followed with his three long-distance runs and Hunter McCracken tossed his third TD pass to Jesse Zorger to close the scoring with 1:42 remaining.

Holland, who broke the District 9 single-season rushing record last year with 2,600 yards, got off to a good start with 312 yards on 24 carries. His first of four touchdowns on   a 17-yard run started the game’s scoring in the first quarter.

McCracken and Zorger’s first two TD hookups came in the third quarter on  passes of 41 and 35 yards. McCracken completed just 4 of 8 passes for 148 yards with Zorger catching all four passes.

For Smethport, Karl Lightner rushed for 178 yards on 24 carries with three first-half touchdowns on runs of 39, 6 and 2 yards.

BROCKWAY 44, SHEFFIELD 6

SHEFFIELD – After spending the last three years as a pass-happy team under the direction of head coach Frank Varischetti and record-setting quarterback Derek Buganza, the Brockway Rovers reverted back to their old ways Saturday after using a strong running game to beat Sheffield 44-6 and give first-year head coach Mike Pisarchick his first win.

The Rovers (1-0 overall, 1-0 AML South) ran for 235 yards including 122 yards on 13 carries by first-year starting quarterback Kyle Braun, who was also 4 of 8 passing for 33 yards. Tom Vervoort added 72 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

Brockway also scored a pair of special teams touchdowns with Jacob Heigel returning a blocked punt by Cody Overturf for a touchdowns and Braun taking the second-half kickoff back 85 yards for a score.

Sheffield’s lone score came on the game’s opening kickoff when Kwante Johnson returned the boot 92 yards to pay dirt. Shaquan Wright, who replaced an injured Ike Nearing in the second quarter, was 4 of 15 passing for 107 yards for the Wolverines (0-1, 0-1 AML North).

PORT ALLEGANY 46, RIDGWAY 35

PORT ALLEGANY – Matt Bodamer threw for accounted for 373 yards of offense and six touchdowns including 326 yards passing and five touchdowns to lead Port Allegany to a season-opening 46-35 shootout win over visiting Ridgway Saturday afternoon.

Bodamer went 17 of 24 passing with touchdown passes of 31 yards, 63 yards, 19 yards and 34 yards to Charlie Buchanan, who finished with eight catches for 172 yards. Bodamer also threw a 21-yard scoring toss to Tyce Miller and ran for a 1-yard score helping the Gators (1-0 overall, 1-0 AML North) rack up 428 yards of total offense. Miller added an 82-yard interception return for a touchdown for Port Allegany, while Rickie Bova had four catches for 104 yards.

Jordan Lundin threw three touchdowns passes for Ridgway including a pair to Eric Matheson, who caught scoring passes of 60 and 10 yards, and a 57-yard scoring strike to Aaron Sorge. Matheson also returned a kickoff 91 yards for the Elkers (0-1, 0-1). Lundin finished 8 of 14 for 234 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions with Matheson catching two passes for 70 yards and rushing 14 times for 49 yards.

Port Allegany led 33-14 at halftime.

DUBOIS 42, PUNXSUTAWNEY 7

DuBOIS – Brady Haines rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns as the DuBois Beavers broke open a close game at halftime with 28 third-quarter points on their way to  a 42-7 rout of the Punxsutawney Chucks in head coach Frank Varischetti’s Beavers debut Friday night at E.J. Mansell Stadium.

Haines scored twice on runs of 47 yards in the first quarter and 54 yards to start the four-touchdown third quarter for the Beavers. Four other Beavers scored touchdowns as Garrett Brown closed the first-half scoring with a 37-yard run.

Also in the third quarter, Noah Bontempo returned an interception 21 yards to the end zone. DuBois outgained Punxsutawney, 508-234. Starting quarterback Sean Sleigh completed 10 of 13 passes for 97 yards.

For the Chucks, quarterback Garrett Zimmerman completed 7 of 13 passes for 154 yards, but was intercepted twice. Luke Janocha caught four passes for 112 yards. Ceaser Maruca scored the Chucks’ lone touchdown on a 5-yard run in the second quarter.

COUDERSPORT 48, JOHNSONBURG 13

JOHNSONBURG – Caden Whitman rushed for 141 yards on 21 carries and scored four touchdowns on runs of 26, 2, 4 and 12 yards to lead visiting Coudersport to a 48-13 rout of the host Rams Friday night.

Mitch Freeman scored twice in the first quarter on runs of 3 and 13 yards as the Falcons led 28-0 to start the game, 35-7 at halftime and 48-7 by the end of the third quarter. Quarterback Tim McCusker tossed a 30-yard pass to Alex Hutchenson for the Falcons’ other score.

For Johnsonburg, quarterback Quinn Luhr threw a 4-yard TD pass to Frank Kocjancic and scored on a 7-yard run in the fourth quarter.

REDBANK VALLEY 20, UNION 14

RIMERSBURG – Caleb Smith caught a 95-yard touchdown pass from Jake Dougherty with 7:27 left to play to break a 14-all tie and give Redbank Valley a 20-14 win over homestanding Union in the season opener for both teams Friday night in Rimersburg.

Both Smith and Dougherty had big games for Redbank Valley with Smith catching two passes for 141 yards while picking off two passes on defense and Dougherty was 5-for-14 for 182 yards and three touchdowns while rushing 13 times for 71 yards in his first varsity start.

Dougherty hit Keaton Delp with two touchdown passes in the final 1:01 of the first half to give the Bulldogs (1-0 overall, 1-0 KSAC Small School Division) a 14-8 halftime lead. Delp caught a 12-yard score with 1:01 left and then a 16-yard scoring toss 16 seconds before the half.

Taylor Smith had a nice game for Union (0-1, 0-1) going 9 of 17 for 146 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing two picks. He hit Brody Pollock with a 27-yard strike in the second quarter and then hit Brandon Tyson with a 44-yard game-tying toss in the third quarter.

MONITEAU 26, KARNS CITY 24

KARNS CITY – A blocked field goal late in the game helped Moniteau hold off archrival Karns City 26-24 in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Karns City.

The Gremlins (0-1 overall, 0-1 KSAC Large School Division), who led 18-6 late in the first half, trailed by two late in the game when Glenn Toy intercepted a screen pass by Kyle Armagost and returned it to the Moniteau 9. But the Warrior defense held and then blocked the field goal.

Armagost accounted for three touchdowns for Moniteau (1-0, 1-0) and went 5 of 14 passing for 144 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions while rushing 24 times for 96 yards and two scores. His 2-yard touchdown run with six seconds left in the first half got the Warriors within four at halftime and his 6-yard scoring run at the start of the fourth quarter gave Moniteau the lead for good.

Alex Kinkela scored twice in the second quarter for Karns City on runs of 70 and 3 yards and finished with 94 yards on nine carries. Toy had a game-high 177 yards on 16 carries while scoring on a 56-yard run while Wyatt Everetts had an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Dustin Geagan ran for 122 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown for Moniteau, while Ethan Pry had three catches for 89 yards and a touchdown.

It marked the fourth straight regular-season game between the teams decided by two points or less. Last year, Karns City won 28-26. In 2009 Moniteau won 22-21 after getting a 35-34 win in 2009. It’s the eighth time in the last 13 games that a Moniteau-Karns City game has been decided by three points or less.

CLEARFIELD 27, CENTRAL-MARTINSBURG 20

MARTINSBURG – Trey Jordan caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Curtis Frye with 5:59 left to play to give Clearfield a 27-20 win over Central-Martinsburg in the season opener for both teams Friday night in Martinsburg.

Frye had a huge night Clearfield (1-0) going 5 of 15 passing for 122 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing 19 times for 85 yards and a touchdown. Beau Swales ran 24 times for 181 yards and a 4-yard score and also caught one pass for 10 yards. He also had 123 yards return yards (punt and kickoff) as well. Clearfield outgained Central-Martinsburg 393-223 including 272-150 on the ground.

Frye scored on a 13-yard run while also throwing a 37-yard touchdown pass to Christian Lezzer. Clearfield trailed 7-0 early and 14-7 late in the first half before Frye hit Lezzer with the scoring touchdown. The Bisons then took their first lead of the game on a 4-yard Swales run in the third quarter before Central-Martinsburg tied the game early in the fourth.

KANE 52, OTTO-ELDRED 20

KANE — Sean Rolick scored 17 points of his own and the Kane Wolves rolled past Otto-Eldred 53-20 in both teams’ gridiron openers Friday. 

Rolick recorded 65 yards and a touchdown on the ground, 37 yards and a touchdown through the air and to top it off he also kicked five extra points. 

Tyler Burdick also scored twice on 73 yards rushing for the Wolves, Jonah Smith ripped off 88 yards rushing and returned a punt 45 yards for a score, while Tyler Ennis picked up 43 yards receiving and returned an interception 50 yards to paydirt. Kane quarterback Sean Jordan completed six of nine passes for 99 yards and a touchdown along with seven yards rushing. Also getting in on the scoring act for Kane were Andrew Pierson (33 yards rushing, one touchdown) and Richie Edinger (24 yards rushing and one touchdown, 19 yards receiving). 

For Otto-Eldred, Lukas Kerr had a solid game on the ground, rushing for 137 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Dakota Vaughn was 6-17 passing for 43 yards and one interception.

ST. MARYS 34, BROOKVILLE 28

ST. MARYS – Justin Quiggle led an effective and balanced St. Marys running game, helping the Flying Dutchmen to a 34-28 opening-season win over visiting Brookville in KSAC-Large School Division action at Dutch Country Stadium Friday night.

Quiggle scored twice in the first half, including a 64-yard dash with 16.1 seconds left in the first half. He finished with 86 yards on 12 carries.

While Quiggle was limited to minus-3 yards on two carries after the first half, teammates Cody Baker and Brian Merritt shared the workload in the second half. Each scored a touchdown to culminate long scoring drives. Merritt scored on a 21-yard run with 1:38 left in the third quarter to break a 21-21 tie and Baker ran one in from seven yards out with 6:33 left in the game to put the Dutch up 34-21. Baker and Merritt ran for 69 and 64 yards respectively.

Raiders quarterback Steven Kennedy threw for three touchdowns and completed 11 of 21 passes for 175 yards. Ryan Kerr rushed for 125 yards on 16 carries and scored on a 21-yard run to start the second half.

CLARION 35, KEYSTONE 0

CLARION – Marcus Smerker scored three touchdowns three different ways, and Clarion’s defense held Keystone to negative yards in the first half in taking a 35-0 win in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium.

Smerker scored on a 1-yard pass from John Katis and on a 1-yard run in the first quarter and recovered a blocked punt by T.J. Armstrong in the end zone for a touchdown in the second quarter helping Clarion (1-0 overall, 1-0 KSAC Small School Division) score all 35 of its points in the first half.

The Bobcat defense held Keystone (0-1, 0-1) to minus-28 yards in the first half and 90 yards in the game, with 69 of those coming on the contest’s final drive.

Bobby Boyer also scored on a 22-yard run for Clarion, while Katis, a sophomore making his first varsity start, hit Logan Chernicky with a 19-yard scoring pass as well.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 32, A-C VALLEY 0

STRATTANVILLE – Clarion-Limestone recorded its first shutout since Oct. 21, 2005, and its first home shutout since Oct. 31, 2003, when its beat A-C Valley 32-0 Friday night in the season opener for both squads.

The Lions (1-0 overall, 1-0 KSAC Small School Division) last recorded a shutout when they beat Union 16-0 and last had a home shutout when they blanked Ridgway 51-0 in the District 9 semifinals. It was also C-L’s first win since topping A-C Valley in last season’s opener breaking a nine-game losing streak.

The game was never really close, as C-L scored 20 first-quarter points and led 26-0 at halftime.

Kyle Robertson had a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown for the game’s first points and Billy Kelley added touchdown runs of 4 and 11 yards in the first half with Joe Tommasi also scoring on a 9-yard run. Robertson closed out the scoring with a 1-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

C-L outgained A-C Valley (0-1, 0-1) 355-108 yards with Tommasi running 10 times for 115, Kelley 11 for 93 and Robertson 12 for 66. Kelley was also 3-for-8 passing for 22 yards and an interception. Kevin Kaufman had two interceptions for A-C Valley.
