District 5-6-8-9 Class AAA Regional Semifinals at Clearfield

HYDE — Junior Christian Lezzer was at it again, shredding an opposing defense and leading the Clearfield Bison to a win.

This time it was the Punxsutawney Chucks he ran over in Clearfield’s 38-18 win in the District 5-6-8-9 Sub-Regional semifinals Friday night at the Bison Sports Complex. Lezzer ran for 235 yards on 23 carries with touchdown runs of 65 and 52 yards. He also threw a 73-yard TD pass to Trey Jordan.

The Bison (11-0) move on to the sub-regional final against University Prep, a 47-38 winner over Somerset, next weekend at a site and time to be announced. Punxsutawney finished the season 5-6.

Clearfield jumped out to a 24-0 lead before the Chucks found the end zone in the third quarter. Lezzer’s 73-yarder to Jordan, Spencer Herrington’s 31-yard field goal and Tyler Stratton’s 5-yard run gave the Bison a 17-0 halftime lead.

Lezzer’s 65-yarder made it 24-0 before Jamie Bush’s 6-yard run put the Chucks on the board with 8:39 left in the third quarter. Chucks quarterback Garrett Zimmerman scored on a 46-yard run at the 8:39 mark to get the Chucks within 24-12 with 3:53 remaining.

Stratton, who finished with 93 yards on 13 carries, scored his second TD on an 18-yard run with 1:36 left in the third.

The Chucks and Bison traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Zimmerman threw a 13-yard pass to Clayton Dale and Lezzer scored his second TD on the 52-yarder, both scores coming with under 90 seconds left in the game to close the scoring.
