ALTOONA – For the second straight year, State College
proved to be too much for DuBois, as the Little Lions captured the
District 6-9 Class AAAA title with a 35-13 win over the Beavers Friday
night in Altoona. For the second straight game, DuBois’ offense was
held in check. After averaging 52.3 points per game in their first eight
games, the Beavers were limited to 28 total points in their final two. And 13 points Friday night wasn’t enough to overcome
a State College attack led by quarterback Patrick Irwin. Irwin was 11 of 14 passing for 124 yards and a
touchdown while also running seven times for 132 yards and a score. His
88-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter might have been
the backbreaker for DuBois, as it occurred moments after the Beavers
fumbled the ball at the State College 5-yard line trailing 14-0. So
instead of possibly being with a touchdown, DuBois found itself down three
scores, 21-0. DuBois tried to make a game of it in the second half
when Shane Marshall scored on a 2-yard run midway through the third
quarter to cut State College’s lead to 21-7. But the Beavers failed to
pick up a first down on a fourth-and-2 play from their own 45-yard line
when Bryson Paulinellie was stopped a yard shy of the stick. State College (9-3) answered with a 6-yard Ryan Goeke
touchdown run and a 32-yard Dan Fry interception return for a score to
seal the victory. DuBois struggled in the passing game going 7 of 13
for 59 yards for the game and was limited after losing center Nick Davido
to a second-half injury. Garrett Brown led DuBois with 16 carries for 103
yards, while Paulinellie, playing in the wild cat position a lot of the
game, had 13 carries for 77 yards. State College faces Erie McDowell, a 61-14 winner over Perry, in the PIAA Class AAAA playoffs next week. NOTES - DuBois' last postseason win game in 1996 over Hollidaysburg. BOX SCORE WILL BE POSTED WHEN AVAILABLE |
