BRADFORD CONTROLS OWN DESTINY IN HUNT FOR SECOND SPOT IN CLASS AAA TITLE GAME

The playoff outlook for District 9 Class AAA is different than how we had originally written it in the recaps following Friday night’s games.

Because of a change in how District 9 is determining the participants in the Class AAA title game, Bradford and not Punxsutawney is the team that controls its own destiny going into Week 9. Clearfield has already clinched the other spot.

The Owls enter Week 9 with 590 PIAA Ranking System Points plus Schedule Points, while Punxsutawney has 550 meaning a Bradford win would put the Owls in the District 9 Class AAA title game against Clearfield. If Bradford loses, and Punxsutawney wins, then the Chucks will face the Bison in the championship tilt.

If both teams lose, the spot opposite of Clearfield could come down to what teams each team has beaten to in Week 9. Bradford still has the clear-cut advantage here, as even if the three opponents the Owls have beaten this year lose in Week 9 (actually its two because Oleans’s season is over), Punxsutawney would need all four teams it beat (Brookville, St. Marys, C-L and A-C Valley) to win in order to forge a tie for the second spot. The playoff formula sent out by District 9 does not indicate how that tie would be broken, although in past instances a coin toss has been used.

Keep in mind that everything written above and below is unofficial. District 9 has the final say in the playoff teams.

The Class AAA title game will be played either Nov. 2 or Nov. 3 at a neutral site to be determined.

BASIC POINTS

120 Points for a win over a Class AAAA opponent

100 points for a win over a Class AAA opponent

80 points for a win over a Class AA opponent

60 points for win over a Class A opponent

POWER POINTS

A team picks up 10 points for every win an opponent said team has beaten win

SCHEDULE POINTS

40 points for every Class AAAA team scheduled regardless of outcome

30 points for every Class AAA team scheduled regardless of outcome

20 points for every Class AA team scheduled regardless of outcome

10 points for every Class A team scheduled regardless of outcome
