FIVE DISTRICT 9 PLAYERS NAMED PA SPORTS WRITERS CLASS A ALL-STATE

HARRISBURG – Five District 9 Class A football players were named to the Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State Class A team Wednesday.

Port Allegany’s Matt Bodamer (quarterback) and Nick Conway (wide receiver) and Curwensville’s Spencer Smeal (offensive line) were named on offense, Clarion’s T.J. Armstrong (linebacker) was named on defense and Brockway’s Phil Esposito (kicker) was named on Special Teams.

Bodamer, who threw for a Pennsylvania single-season record 3,951 yards while tying the Pennsylvania single-season record with 52 touchdowns passes while also running for 832 yards and 13 touchdowns, was The Rehab Centre D9Sports.com District 9 Most Valuable Player as well as the Offensive Player of the Year, Armstrong, who had 102 tackles including 22 ½ for loss with five sacks and two forced fumbles, was the Defensive Player of the Year and Esposito, who was 55 of 57 on PATs and 4 of 9 on field goals, was the Special Teams Player of the Year.

Conway led District 9 with a district-record 1,482 yards receiving on 77 catches while setting a District 9 record with 24 touchdown catches this year.

Smeal, a tackle, anchored a Curwensville offensive line that helped the Golden Tide average 462.9 yards per game (324.3 rushing, 102.6 passing) on the season and 38.1 points per game.

The Class AA all-state team was also named Wednesday, but no District 9 players made the grade. The Class AAA and AAAA teams are released Thursday.

NOTES – Bodamer also set the Pennsylvania career passing mark with 10,948 yards, the first player in state history to throw for 10,000 yards in a career while also setting the career touchdown passes mark with 137. He was named the Gatorade Pennsylvania High School Football Player of the Year this year, an award the combined academic and athletic achievement. He was also the 2011 District 9 Offensive Player of the Year … Armstrong, an Old Dominion recruit, was also the 2011 District 9 Defensive Player of the Year, while Esposito, who hit 96 of 99 PATs in the past two years, was the 2011 Special Teams Player of the Year.
