KANE 34, SHEFFIELD 6

SHEFFIELD – Going into the 2013 season, Kane knew it was going to have to replace a lot of skill players, Saturday afternoon the replacements came through in a big way helping the Wolves to a 34-6 win over Sheffield in the season opener for both teams at Sheffield.

First-year starting quarterback Kevin Cleer was 17 of 24 for 141 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, while John English took over at tailback and rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries. The one skill player holdover from last year’s District 9 runner-up team, Jeff Kocjancic, had seven catches for 71 yards and two scores.

Tommy Reeves scored Sheffield’s lone touchdown on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines managed just 51 yards of total offense.

James Lingenfelter led the Kane defense with 11 tackles and a sack.

BROCKWAY 21, CAMERON COUNTY 18

BROCKWAY – Alec Shaffer-Doan threw a pair of touchdown passes to Anthony Isabella to help Brockway get a 21-18 win over visiting Cameron County Friday night.

Shaffer-Doan, who threw for over 2,000 yards in 2012, was 15 of 29 for 145 yards and the two touchdowns in his 2013 season debut. He also ran 13 times for 59 yards. Isabella caught six passes for 82 yards and the scores.

Tucker Britton threw for a touchdown and ran for a touchdown for Cameron County. He was 9 of 22 passing for 109 yards and the score and ran 15 times for a game-high 95 yards. Jordan Clauser had three catches for 46 yards including a 15-yard touchdown reception, while Eric Spehalski scored on a 59-yard punt return and also had three catches for 52 yards.

BRADFORD 21, KENNEDY CATHOLIC 6

HERMITAGE – Sean Siffrinn ran for one touchdown and threw for another before leaving the game due to injury as Bradford defeated Kennedy Catholic 21-6 in a non-league game Saturday.

Siffrinn injured his arm on the last play of the first half while scrambling out of the pocket, and the severity of his injury is unknown.

The Bradford defense stifling, limiting the Golden Eagles to just 80 yards of total offense and not allowing a first down until 2:33 left in the third quarter.

Siffrinn threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Zach Bartlebaugh, who relieved him at quarterback in the second half, and also scored on 1-yard touchdown run.

The Owls collected a safety with 42 seconds left in the first half and made it 21-0 on a 4-yard touchdown run by Alex Colosimo in the third quarter.

Colosimio led the Owls with 82 yards rushing on eight carries and Bartlebaugh intercepted a pair of passes on defense.

SHARPSVILLE 35, MONITEAU 12

WEST SUNBURY – Despite a pair of Cody Skiver touchdown runs, Moniteau dropped a 35-12 decision to visiting Sharpsville in the debut of long-time assistant coach Cecil Blauser has head coach.

Skiver scored on runs of 36 and five yards and ran 13 times for a team-high 78 yards. Stephen Hagg added 12 carries for 76 yards for the Warriors (0-1).

Tyler Wasnack scored four touchdowns – three on the ground one on a kickoff return – and ran 12 times for 165 yards for the District 10 Blue Devils (1-0).

SMETHPORT 28, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 21

SMETHPORT – Ryan Nielson ran for 69 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries to lead Smethport to a 28-21 win over visiting Elk County Catholic Friday night.

Dustin Zetwick added 14 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown while going 3-for-7 passing for 35 yards for the Hubbers (1-0).

Jonathan Dippold paced ECC (0-1) with a pair of short touchdown runs while rushing for 49 yards on 19 carries. Andrew Gebauer was 11-for-18 passing for 187 yards and a touchdown to Ryan Childs, who caught six passes for 74 yards and a score. Childs’ touchdown came with just over 30 seconds left in the game and set the final score.

CURWENSVILLE 34, COUDERSPORT 26

CURWENSVILLE – Zach Tibbens ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns and also returned a kickoff 82 yards for a score to lead Curwensville to a season-opening 34-26 win over visiting Coudersport Friday night.

Tibbens scored on runs of 19 and 44 yards and returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown for the Golden Tide (1-0), who broke a 20-all halftime tie on the 44-yard run late in the third quarter.

Ethan Hite scored a pair of touchdowns for Coudersport (0-1) scoring on a 30-yard fumble return and a 3-yard run while also throwing a 26-yard touchdown pass to Coy Hoffman. He finished 9-for-19 for 110 yards, the touchdown and an interception, while Hoffman had 11 carries for 130 yards while catching three passes for 24 yards.

Tibbens added one catch for seven yards for Curwensville.

RIDGWAY 20, OTTO-ELDRED 8

JOHNSONBURG – The new Ridgway-Johnsonburg coop, which is housed at Ridgway, got off to a great start Friday night in Johnsonburg when the Elkers knocked off Otto-Eldred 20-8 behind a strong defensive effort.

Ridgway (1-0) forced three turnovers while holding the Terrors (0-1) to 39 yards passing with a pair of interceptions.

Three different Elkers scored on the ground with Cole Myers (15 yards), Ben McDonald (14 yards) and Sam Delhunty (4 yards) finding pay dirt.

Sam Colebert scored Otto’s lone touchdown. The Terrors also took an early 2-0 lead on a safety.

Delhunty led Ridgway with 97 yards rushing on 14 carries, while Colebert had 116 on 22 carries for Otto. Dakota Vaughn also ran 15 times for 83 yards but was 6-for-15 passing for 39 yards and two picks.

CLEARFIELD 45, ST. JOAN OF ARC (ONTARIO) 7

HYDE – Behind Seth Ford and Christian Lezzer, Clearfield rolled past Canada’s St. Joan of Arc 45-7 Friday night at Clearfield.

Lezzer scored three touchdowns on the ground and threw for a score, while Ford had a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown.

Lezzer ran 14 times for 147 yards and was 4-for-7 passing for 64 yards and the score. Ford had 10 carries for 41 yards and the score and caught two passes for 33 yards. Freshman Seth Caldwell added 17 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Clearfield led 29-0 at halftime.

MIFFLIN COUNTY 21, DUBOIS 17

DUBOIS – Heath Hidlay’s 12-yard run 29 seconds into the fourth quarter lifted visiting Mifflin County to a 21-17 win over DuBois in the season opener for both teams Friday night in DuBois.

The Beavers (0-1), who have lost three straight after starting last year 8-0, led 7-0 at halftime thanks to a 40-yard punt return for a touchdown by Ian Hine but trailed 14-7 midway through the third quarter after Curtis Jerzerick returned a fumble 74 yards for a touchdown.

Bryce Paulinellie, however, tied the game when he returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown, and Josh Hnat gave the Beavers a 17-14 lead with a 20-yard field goal late in the third quarter.

DuBois’ offense struggled gaining just 143 yards, as junior quarterback Gabe French was 18 of 31 for 98 yards and two interceptions. Life after Garrett Brown wasn’t kind to the running game, either, as the Beavers ran 28 times for 45 yards with Devin Clark leading the way with 19 carries for 29 yards. Trevor Schwiderske had eight catches for 53 yards.

Hidlay led Mifflin County with 71 yards on 14 totes.

Karns City 42, St. Marys 0

KARNS CITY — Wyatt Everetts and Dakota Mohney each scored two touchdowns and quarterback Tyler Kepple tossed three touchdowns and threw for 246 yards to lead the Karns City Gremlins to an easy win over visiting St. Marys.

The Gremlins led 35-0 by halftime, enacting the PIAA’s Mercy Rule running clock in the second half. Everetts opened the game with a 27-yard TD run and then caught a 28-yard pass from Kepple less then two minutes after Kepple hit Logan Moroney for an 88-yard TD pass.

Christian Turner returned an interception 21 yards for a score and Mohney ran for TDs of 5 and 28 yards in the second half.

Clarion 74, Clarion-Limestone 0

STRATTANVILLE — Visiting Clarion piled up 11 touchdowns and routed the Clarion-Limestone Lions, 74-0, for its most lopsided win since 2000′s 82-0 win over West Shamokin.

Tanner Corbett, Damien Slike and Ben Babbington each scored two touchdowns for the Bobcats, who scored 33 second-quarter point on five touchdowns in the quarter to take a 54-0 halftime lead.

Six different players found the end zone, including Cody Hearst on a 60-yard run on a screen pass turned lateral.

With the PIAA’s Mercy Rule running clock going to start the second half, Brendan Miller took the opening kickoff 63 yards for a touchdown.

Despite the lopsided score, the Bobcats outgained the Lions by just a 294-190 margin. The Bobcats didn’t complete a pass, attempting just two. Ian Corbett and Tyler Allan each added rushing TDs for Clarion.

Union 36, A-C Valley 7

FOXBURG — Quarterback Lane Cicciarelli three three touchdown passes to Shane Murphy in the first half and Dylan Shirey ran for two scores in the fourth as the Union Golden Knights beat A-C Valley, 36-7, last night.

Cicciarelli threw scoring strikes of 27 and 12 yards to Murphy in the first quarter and then hooked up on a 70-yarder with 37 seconds left in the first half to give Union a 22-7 lead. He completed 4 of 8 passes for 104 yards.

Shirey’s TD runs covered 49 and 35 yards. He ran for 124 yards on 10 carries.

Mike Suto’s 4-yard run in the second quarter gave the Falcons their only touchdown.

Redbank Valley 44, Keystone 6

NEW BETHLEHEM — Mark Strothers’ return from two knee injuries in the past year was a successful one as he ran for 96 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 10, 49 and 6 yards as the Bulldogs rolled up 41 points in the first half in a 44-6 rout of visiting Keystone.

The Bulldogs led 41-0 at halftime, enacting the PIAA Mercy Rule’s running clock to start the second half. Zane Watson’s 21-yard field goal were the only points for the Bulldogs in the second half.

Bulldogs quarterback Jack Dougherty ran for a 5-yard touchdown and threw a 78-yard TD pass to Korbin Hornberger.

Keystone’s lone score came on Austin Chambers’ 19-yard pass to Dustin Wolbert in the fourth quarter.

Brookville 25, Punxsutawney 22

BROOKVILLE — Zach Vroman ran for a school-record 306 yards on 19 carries and scored three first-half touchdowns of 52, 52 and 76 yards in the first half as the Brookville Raiders held off Punxsutawney, 25-22, Friday night.

The Raiders led 18-14 at halftime and scored on the opening drive of the second half when quarterback Bobby McGranor plowed his way in from one yard out, giving the Raiders a 25-14 advantage after converting their first point-after kick.

From there, the Raiders hung on. The Chucks recovered a Raiders fumble on a punt return and made it 25-22 after Matt Burkett hit Parker Weaver with an 18-yard TD pass with 4:51 left in the game.

Things got more interesting when the Chucks recovered a Vroman fumble at their own 28 with 3:02 remaining, but three plays later the Chucks gave it back when Jacob Keesecker recovered a Burkett fumble at the Chucks’ 36. The Raiders ran out the clock from there.

Vroman, who topped the previous mark of 305 set by Max Kutz vs. St. Marys in 2006, gained 200 yards on just eight carries in the first half alone.

Falgout ran for 97 yards on 18 carries and scored on a 3-yard run to give the Chucks a 14-12 lead in the second quarter. Burkett completed 10 of 20 passes for 112 yards with just one completion coming in the second half.

Athens 30, Port Allegany 14

PORT ALLEGANY – After Port Allegany jumped out to a 14-0 lead, Athens reeled off 30 unanswered points en rout to a 30-14 win over the Gators, spoiling the first game under the lights at Port Allegany for the host team.

The loss was Port Allegany’s first in the regular season since Sept. 24, 2011, a 25-19 setback to Elk County Catholic.

Tyler Shaffer scored on runs of 84 and 77 yards for Port Allegany, which outgained Athens 335-308.

Athens, out of District 4, took a 17-14 lead on a 40-yard field goal by Troy Stivason and added a pair of scores in the third and fourth quarter.

Tyler Forbes scored on a 3-yard TD run and also threw a 29-yard touchdown to Cody Cain.
