BROCKWAY 55, OTTO-ELDRED 54, OVERTIME

DUKE CENTER – In a game where defense seemed optional, Brockway’s defense made a stop when it needed to holding Otto-Eldred’s Sam Colebert short of the goaline in on an overtime two-point attempt allowing the Rovers to escape Duke Center with a 55-54 victory.

The 109 combined points is the most in District 9 in the D9Sports.com era (2000 to present) surpassing the 102 points the same two teams combined to score in a 74-28 Brockway win in 2009.

Brockway (2-0), which led 41-28 at halftime but trailed 48-41 with a minute to play in regulation, took a 55-48 lead in overtime on a 3-yard Anthony Benson run and a Jarrett Esposito extra point.

Otto-Eldred (0-2) answered back on a 9-yard Dakota Vaughn to Anthony Drummond touchdown pass to get within one and then decided to go for the win after  missing a pair of extra point tries in regulation.

The Terrors looked like they had completed an improbable comeback when Vaughn scored on a 15-yard run with 6:51 left in regulation to put them ahead 48-41, but Brockway tied the game with just 51 seconds left when Alec Shaffer-Doan threw his seventh touchdown pass of the game, a 5-yard strike to Anthony Isabella, and Esposito tacked on the extra point to force overtime.

It was the Shaffer-Doan show in the first half, as the senior threw six touchdown passes in the half, including three each to Benson and Isabella, to stake the Rovers to the 13-point halftime lead. Shaffer-Doan, who fell one shy of the District 9 and Brockway record of eight touchdown passes thrown by Derek Buganza in 2010, finished the night 35 of 56 for 498 yards. He did throw an interception.

Isabella and Benson were both favorite targets of Shaffer-Doan with Benson grabbing 13 passes for 214 yards and four touchdowns and Benson catching 12 passes for 175 yards and three scores. Benson also ran 11 times for 67 yards and the game-winning touchdown, while Shaffer-Doane had 10 carries for 55 yards helping Brockway pile up 625 yards.

 

But Otto-Eldred rallied behind the running of Drummond in the second half to take the lead thanks to a pair of Drummond touchdown runs and Vaughn’s go-ahead touchdown. The Terrors rushed for 502 yards on 51 carries on the night led by three 100-yard rushers.

Colebert finished with 25 carries for 197 yards and two touchdowns, Drummond had 10 carries for 195 yards and three scores and quarterback Vaughn had 13 totes for 121 yards and two touchdowns while going 2-for-7 passing for 24 yards and the score. Colebert added an interception on defense.

Brookville 35, Redbank Valley 21

BROOKVILLE — Zach Vroman ran for 314 yards on 28 carries and scored two touchdowns on runs of 44 and 42 yards as the Brookville Raiders scored 35 answered points after trailing early, 7-0.

Vroman turned in his second straight 300-yard effort after gaining 306 last week against Punxsutawney. He scored the Raiders’ first touchdown on his 44-yarder in the first quarter and his 42-yarder with 9:40 left in the game put the Raiders up 35-7. It ended a stretch where the Raiders scored five touchdowns in six possessions to pull away.

Strothers ran for 113 yards on 15 carries. Quarterback Jake Dougherty ran for two short TD runs of 4 and 1 yards to get the Bulldogs back in the game in the fourth quarter. He completed 7 of 23 passes for 99 yards.

Redbank Valley scored 1:16 into the game on Mark Strothers’ 25-yard run one play after Vroman fumbled a punt away. The Bulldogs had a first-and-10 at the Raiders’ 15 in their next possession, but fumbled the ball away and the Raiders took control from there.

Oil City 49, Bradford 0

OIL CITY – Oil City scored on seven of its eight possessions en route to a 49-0 win over Bradford in District 10, Region 5 action.

Kevin Daly ran for 145 yards and a pair of scores and Trent Zdarko threw a pair of touchdown passes to Logan Way for Oil City, which outgained Bradford 443-141.

Alex Colosimo led Bradford in rushing with 70 yards on 14 carries.

Warren 27, Clarion-Limestone 0

STRATTANVILLE — The visiting Warren Dragons scored all of their points in the first half to blank Clarion-Limestone, 27-0, Friday night.

Warren quarterback D.J. Fehlman threw four touchdown passes, three of them to Tanner Stanz of 9, 11 and 27 yards. He also tossed a 2-yarder to Matt Hulquist. He completed 14 of 18 passes for 195 yards. Warren improved to 2-0.

Chase Alcorn rushed for 69 yards on 6 carries for C-L (0-2). Quarterback Christian Bakewell completed 4 of 8 passes for 123 yards.

Clearfield 37, Penns Valley 15

HYDE — The Clearfield Bison piled up 391 yards of rushing in a 37-15 rout of Penns Valley Friday night.

Tyler Stratton ran for 148 yards and a touchdown, quarterback Christian Lezzer rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 1, 10 and 5 yards, and Seth Caldwell gained 86 yards with a 14-yard TD run.

The Bison (2-0) led 17-0 at halftimne, getting a 36-yard field goal from Spencer Herrington just before halftime.

Curwensville 21, Cameron County 20

EMPORIUM — Fighting off a two-point conversion try with no time on the clock, the Curwensville Golden Tide escaped with a 21-20 win at Cameron County Friday night.

The Red Raiders (0-2) got to within 21-20 when quarterback Tucker Britton hit Nate Andrus with a 14-yard TD pass as time ran out in regulation. Opting to go for the win with a two-point conversion, a pass attempt fell incomplete as the Golden Tide (2-0) held on for the win.

Curwensville, leading 15-14 at the time, went up 21-14 with 1:33 left in the game when Alex Olson scored on a 9-yard run. The Tide’s point-after kick was blocked.

Zach Tibbens ran for 210 yards on 36 carries for the Tide with TD runs of 6 and 15 yards.

For Cameron County, Britton scored on a 16-yard run. He ran for 57 yards and passed for 97 yards, but was intercepted three times. Tony Olivett started the game’s scoring with a 14-yard TD run.

Kane 54, Port Allegany 0

KANE – Kevin Cleer threw for 146 yards and four touchdowns and John English ran for 147 yards and a pair of scores as Kane shutout visiting Port Allegany Friday.

The loss for the Gators (0-2) ended their streak of 14 straight wins over AML opponents and 20 straight over District 9 opponents.

Kane jumped out to a 34-0 lead at halftime, capped by a 22-yard touchdown pass from Cleer to Jeff Kocjancic, the second of two touchdowns connections in the first half between the duo.

The Wolves added a pair of late touchdowns on runs by Tyler Rolick (5-yard) and Shane Rolick (3 yards).

Coudersport 19, Ridgway 6

COUDERSPORT – Ethan Hite threw for 164 yards and three touchdowns to lead Coudersport to a 19-6 win over visiting Ridgway Friday.

After a scoreless first half, Hite connected with Coy Hoffman, who accounted for 213 yards of offense, with an 8-yard pitch and catch for a 6-0 advantage.

That duo connected again early in the fourth quarter, this time on an 84-yard strike that made it 13-0.

Hite threw his third touchdown pass on the ensuing drive to Ben Ragosta, capping a 10-play, 57-yard drive.

Coudersport’s defense pitched a shutout until late in the fourth quarter, and limited Ridgway to 115 yards on the ground.

Both teams are now 1-1.

Sheffield 27, Elk County Catholic 16

ST. MARYS – Sheffield rallied from an early 9-0 deficit to top Elk County Catholic 27-16.

The comeback can be attributed in large part to the big-play ability of Jereek Jackson.

Trailing 16-15 in the third quarter, Jackson broke free for a 79-yard touchdown run to give Sheffield the lead at 21-16.

Jackson followed that up with an 62-yard punt return to give the Wolverines (1-1) their 11-point margin of victory.

Jonathan Dippold rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown for Elk County Catholic (0-2), while Sheffield’s Adam Higby completed 9-of-12 passes for 133 yards and a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Prosen.

St. Marys (N.Y.) 70, Smethport 7

SMETHPORT – Nick Vallone ran for four touchdowns as St. Marys (N.Y.) ran to a 70-7 win over Smethport.

Smethport connected for its lone score in the first quarter, with Dustin Zetwick tossing a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Corbett.

DuBois 68, Franklin 14

FRANKLIN — Devin Clark ran for 232 yards and five touchdowns as the DuBois Beavers amassed 622 yards of offense in their 68-14 rout of Franklin Friday night.

Along with running for 355 yards, the Beavers (1-1) added 267 yards of passing. Gabe French completed 7 of 9 passes for 180 yards and threw two touchdowns. Bryson Paulinellie caught a 37-yarder from French and also scored on a 13-yard run. French’s other TD pass went to Ian Hine covering 33 yards. Jesus Rosa scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 1-yard run and a 55-yard fumble return.

West Middlesex 48, Moniteau 28

WEST SUNBURY — Eric Lucich ran for 263 yards on 17 carries and ran for four touchdowns on runs of 66, 10, 38 and 10 yards in West Middlesex’s 48-28 win over Moniteau Friday night.

Moniteau (0-2) got touchdowns from four different players. Josh McBride ran for a 74-yard touchdown in the first quarter and led the Warriors with 80 yards on just two carries. Stephen Hagg scored on an 18-yard run in the second quarter, Dustin Geagan ran 15 yards for a TD in the third quarter and quarterback Cody Skiver threw a 45-yard TD pass to Trevor Shaffer in the fourth quarter.

Punxsutawney 34, Union 18

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Christian Falgout ran for 186 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Punxsutawney Chucks to a 34-18 win over visiting Union Friday night.

Falgout’s TD runs covered 1, 5 and 5 yards and he also caught a 5-yard TD pass from quarterback Matt Burkett. Parker Weaver also caught a 49-yard TD pass from Dakota Thomas for the Chucks, who improved to 2-0.

Union (1-1) got two TD passes from quarterback Lane Cicciarelli, who connected with Shane Murphy twice from 11 and 50 yards out. Cicciarelli, who completed 8 of 17 passes for 150 yards, also scored on a run.

St. Marys 39, Keystone 19

KNOX — Alex Feldbauer ran for three touchdowns and Nick Cunningham passed for two scores as the St. Marys Flying Dutchmen beat the Keystone Panthers, 39-19.

Feldbauer rushed for 118 yards on 21 carries and scored on runs of 13, 5 and 12 yards. His 5-yarder came on the final play of the first half. Cunningham completed 10 of 17 passes for 173 yards and threw TD passes of 13  and 14 yards to Brady Bauer, who caught 7 passes for 100 yards. Feldbauer had four catches for 73 yards. Jordan Straub added a 39-yard TD run in the fourth quarter as the Dutch improved to 1-1.

For Keystone (0-2), quarterback Austin Chambers completed 9 of 13 passes for 229 yards. He threw TD passes of 8 yards to Jake Corvino and 73 yards to Jacob Weaver. Bryce Altman added a 15-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
