Clearfield 35, Central-Martinsburg 20 WJAC TV Highlights

ROARING SPRING — Tyler Stratton and Christian Lezzer combined for a big night rushing as the Clearfield Bison notched a key Mountain League win at Central-Martinsburg, 35-20, Friday night.

Clearfield (3-0) trailed 20-14 at halftime, but scored three touchdowns in the second half to get the win. Stratton scored two of his four TDs in the second half on a 45-yard run less than two minutes into the third quarter and capped the game’s scoring with a 9-yarder at the 8:27 mark of the fourth quarter. He finished with 188 yards on 32 carries.

Lezzer wasn’t far behind, gaining 184 yards on 28 attempts. He had a 19-yard TD run in the third quarter. He and Stratton combined for 372 of the Bison’s 444 total yards with Lezzer completing 2 of 6 passes for 75 yards, one of the completions going for 50 yards to Stratton.

Central (2-1) got a big night on the ground from its do-it-all quarterback Austin Cunningham, who rushed for 152 yards on 14 carries. He completed just 4 of 13 passes for 81 yards, tossing a 47-yard TD pass to Adam Frederick in the first quarter.

Redbank Valley 55, Union 34

RIMERSBURG — Mark Strothers ran for a school-record 302 yards on 32 carries and scored seven touchdowns, which is believed to tie the District 9 record, in Redbank Valley’s 55-34 win at Union Friday night.

Strothers scored five touchdowns in the second half as the Bulldogs (2-1 overall, 2-0 KSAC-Small School) broke open a close 20-19 game at halftime. He ran for touchdowns of 10 and 64 yards in the second quarter, blasted for TD runs of 13, 28 and 4 yards in the third quarter, and added two 33-yard scoring runs in the fourth quarter.

Strothers broke the previous Bulldogs’ single-game record of 289 yards set by Skyler Smith against Moniteau in 2005. The last District 9 runner to score seven touchdowns in a game was Clearfield’s Dave Richards in 2002. It is believed to be the only other time a D9 player scored seven touchdowns on the ground.

Redbank Valley’s first touchdown came on quarterback Jake Dougherty’s 4-yard pass to Connor Shoemaker.

Union (1-2, 1-1) actually led the Bulldogs, 26-19, following Dylan Shirey’s second touchdown of the game on a 56-yard pass from quarterback Lane Cicciarelli less than two minutes into the second half, but Strothers took over from there. Shirey also scored the game’s first touchdown on a 74-yard run 22 seconds into the contest.

Cicciarelli completed 16 of 26 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns. He threw a 70-yarder to Chet Carmichael in the second quarter and a 2-yarder to Tanner Schrecengost for Union’s final touchdown in the fourth quarter. Carmichael caught seven passes for 163 yards.

St. Marys 32, Brookville 22

ST. MARYS — Alex Feldbauer ran for 252 yards on 33 carries and scored on a 55-yard touchdown run to lead the St. Marys Flying Dutchmen to a 32-22 win over previously unbeaten Brookville Friday night.

St. Marys (2-1 overall, 1-1 KSAC-Large) broke a 6-6 tie with four straight touchdowns, culminating with Feldbauer’s TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Quarterback Nick Cunningham threw a 20-yard TD pass to Brady Bauer and ran for a 1-yard score, and Nate Straub ran for touchdowns of 11 and 1 yards.

The Raiders (2-1, 1-1) got 178 yards from Zach Vroman on 16 carries. He scored on runs of 8 and 9 yards. Quarterback Bobby McGranor threw a 32-yard TD pass to Braiden Smith.

Clarion 62, Keystone 19

CLARION — The Clarion Bobcats scored 49 points by halftime and all of their points by the end of the third quarter in a 62-19 rout of visiting Keystone at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium Friday night.

Tyler Allen scored four touchdowns and Ian Corbett added three more as the Bobcats improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the KSAC-Small School Division. Allen recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for the game’s first points, scored on runs of 15 and 16 yards and caught a 1-yard TD pass from John Katis. Corbett added TD runs of 1, 13 and 30 yards. Katis also threw a 16-yard TD pass to Cody Hearst and Tanner Corbett scored on a 17-yard run.

Keystone (0-3, 0-2) got on the board in the first quarter on Austin Chambers’ 5-yard pass to Matt Best. Gideon Coleman had a 58-yard TD run and Brayden Shick tossed an 8-yard pass to Logan Corvino for two Panthers touchdowns late in the fourth quarter.

Warren 32, Bradford 14

WARREN — Warren scored touchdowns on three of its first four plays of the second half en route to a 32-14 victory over Bradford Friday.

Trailing 13-0 at halftime, Bradford (1-2, 0-2 District 10, Region 5) drove 76 yards in 13 plays, taking nearly eight minutes off the clock on a drive the culminated with a Kyle Langdon 1-yard touchdown run that made it 13-7.

Warren (3-0, 1-0) responded quickly, however, with Kyle Kulka scoring on runs of 30 and 70 yards  and D.J. Fehlman throwing a 44-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Shattuck.

Langdon added a fourth quarter touchdown for the Owls, and finished with 199 yards rushing on 29 carries.

Clarion-Limestone 35, A-C Valley 27

STRATTANVILLE — Chase Alcorn and Brent Slater each ran for over 100 yards as the Clarion-Limestone Lions ended a 21-game losing streak with a 35-27 win over visiting A-C Valley.

The Lions (1-2 overall, 1-1 KSAC-Small School) trailed 21-7 late in the first half before scoring the next 28 unanswered points, including two touchdowns in the final 3:18 of the second quarter. Christian Bakewell threw a 56-yard pass to Noah Rankin and Kyle Robertson scored on a 1-yard run with 15 seconds left before halftime.

The Lions went ahead for good with two third-quarter scores, Alcorn on a 36-yard run and Slater on a 1-yard run. Alcorn rushed for 145 yards on 22 carries while Slater went for 103 yards on 13 attempts. He scored the Lions’ first touchdown on an 84-yard kick return in the first quarter.

For A-C Valley (0-3, 0-2), Mike Suto scored three touchdowns on a 59-yard punt return to start the game’s scoring in the first quarter along with a 21-yard run in the first quarter and 17-yard run in the fourth quarter. Dallas Wingard led the team with 139 yards rushing on just seven attempts, scoring on a 53-yard run in the second quarter.

Clarion-Limestone’s last win was against A-C Valley in the 2011 season-opener.

Curwensville 42, Smethport 13

CURWENSVILLE — Zack Tibbens ran for four touchdowns and 160 yards on 24 carries to lead the Curwensville Golden Tide to a 42-13 win over Smethport Friday night.

Tibbens ran for scores of 4, 35 and 26 yards in the first half, then added a 7-yarder in the Tide’s 20-point fourth quarter. Alex Olson scored the other two Tide touchdowns on fourth-quarter runs of 29 and 10 yards. The Golden Tide , forcing six Smethport turnovers, improved to 3-0.

Smethport (1-2) got a 2-yard run from Ryan Stratton midway through the second quarter and a 28-yard TD pass from Dustin Zetwick to Nate Wilbur.

Kane 35, Otto-Eldred 8

KANE – Kane jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and eased to a 35-8 win over Otto-Eldred.

Kevin Cleer through four touchdown passes, two each to Andrew Pierson and Jeff Kocjancic and finished with 171 yards through the air on the night.

John English added a five-yard touchdown run on the ground for the Wolves, who start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2007.

Sam Colebert scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for Otto-Eldred, which fell to 0-3.

Coudersport 38, St. Joseph’s Academy 14

COUDERSPORT – Coudersport scored 24 unanswered points in the second half  en route to a 38-14 win over St. Joesph’s Catholic Academy.

Zac Elenchin scored the go-ahead touchdown on a two-yard run in the third quarter. Coy Hoffman added a rushing touchdown and Ethan Hite connected with Alex Hershey for a 10-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Ben Ragosta and Elenchin scored on a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first half for the 2-1 Falcons.

Coudersport outgained St. Joseph’s 264-161 for the game.

KARNS CITY 49, MONITEAU 12

KARNS CITY – A third of Tristan Rhoades’ carries – 3 of 9 – Friday night ended in the end zone, as the Karns City back rushed for 124 yards to lead the Gremlins to a 49-12 win over visiting Moniteau at newly named Diehl Stadium Friday night.

Rhoades, who missed Karns City’s first two games with an injury, scored on a 19-yard run to open the scoring in the first quarter and then added back-to-back third-quarter scoring runs (23 and 12 yards) to put the Mercy Rule into action a week after the Gremlins had been Mercy Ruled themselves at Clarion.

Also scoring the Gremlins (2-1 overall, 2-0 KSAC Large School Division) were Dakota Mohney (3-yard run), Logan Moroney (15-yard pass from Tyler Kepple), Wyatt Everetts (6-yard run) and Colin Dunmyre (75-yard run).

Everetts also topped the century mark rushing going for 116 yards on just 10 carries helping the Gremlins rack up 451 yards on the ground and 530 for the game outgaining Moniteau 530-154. Everetts added two catches for 50 yards and had an interception on defense, while Rhoades also chipped in an interception on defense.

The Warriors (0-3, 0-1) trailed 42-0 before Stephen Hagg scored on a 17-yard run seven second into the fourth quarter. Josh McBride added a 1-yard scoring run late in the game for Moniteau, which got 58 yards rushing on 10 carries for Cody Skiver, who was also 5-for-12 passing for 79 yards but was intercepted three times.

DUBOIS 49, PUNXSUTAWNEY 7

DUBOIS – Bryson Paulinellie caught two touchdown passes from Gabe French and threw a third scoring pass to Cole Kriner, as DuBois rolled past visiting Punxsutawney 49-7.

Paulinellie had three catches for 70 yards, was 7 of 10 passing for 56 yards and ran four times for 49 yards for the Beavers (2-1).

French was 9 of 13 passing for 180 yards and two touchdowns, while Chad O’Donnell and Devin Clark combined to score four rushing touchdowns. Clark carried 10 times for 97 yards and two scores with O’Donnell running five times for 29 yards and two touchdowns.

Christian Falgout ran for 116 yards to lead Punxsy (1-2), while Perry Arrington picked up 65 yards rushing and the Chucks lone touchdown on an 11-yard fourth-quarter run.

CAMERON COUNTY 19, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 13

ST. MARYS – Caleb Burnside ran 20 times for 153 yards and three touchdowns to give first-year Cameron County head coach Mike Kunes his first career win, 19-13 over homestanding Elk County Catholic Saturday night.

Burnside scored on first-half runs of three and 50 yards and then added a 1-yard plunge in the second half. Burnside also had an interception on defense.

Andrew Gebauer threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Childs and was 7 of 25 passing for 125 yards but also threw three interceptions. Childs had four catches for 81 yards and the touchdown and also picked off a pass on defense.

Brockway 33, Sheffield 16

SHEFFIELD – Brockway scored 19 unanswered points in the second half en route to a 33-16 win over Sheffield Saturday.

Trailing 16-13 at halftime, the Rovers’ rode a pair of Alec Shaffer-Doan to Anthony Benson touchdowns as well as a 40-yard touchdown run from Benson to take control in the second half.

Benson also intercepted a second-half pass for the Rovers, who yielded just two first downs to Sheffield in the final 24 minutes.

Benson finished with 99 yards receiving and 87 yards rushing, while Shaffer-Doan completed 24-of-42 passes for 296 yards and 3 scores, as well as rushing for 90 yards and a score.

Sheffield took the lead with 58 seconds left in the first half on a Jareek Jackson 6-yard touchdown run. Jackson led the Wolverines with 56 yards rushing on 8 carries.

Brockway outgained Sheffield 521-218.

PORT ALLEGANY 8, RIDGWAY 6

PORT ALLEGANY – Tyler Shaffer broke a scoreless tie with a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter with Rick Veilleux catching the two-point conversion pass from Shaffer, and the Port Allegany defense held off Ridgway for an 8-6 Gators win on homecoming Saturday afternoon in Port Allegany.

The game was a defensive struggle throughout with the teams scoreless at halftime before Shaffer scored on a 1-yard run four minutes into the second half, and Shaffer hit Veilleux with the two-point conversion pass.

Ridgway (1-2) got back within two a 5 ½ minutes later when Ben MacDonald dropped back to pass, saw an opening and broke free for a 54-yard scoring run. But Port Allegany’s defense stopped the two-point conversion.

The Elkers had a chance to take the lead early in the fourth quarter but were stopped inside the Port Allegany 20-yard line, and never really threatened after that.

Shaffer led the Gators (1-2) with 29 carries for 122 yards and the score while also catching two passes for 24 yards. Cory Burr had two interceptions on defense.

MacDonald passed Ridgway with 77 yards rushing on nine carries while going 4-for-15 passing for 44 yards and three picks.,
