BROCKWAY 59, JOHNSONBURG 33

BROCKWAY – Alec Shaffer-Doan threw for 323 yards and six touchdowns to lead Brockway to their third straight AML South title with a 59-33 win over visiting Johnsonburg Friday night.

Hitting five different receivers for touchdowns, Shaffer-Doan finished the night 22 of 34 while also throwing an interception in helping the Rovers move to 8-0 on the year.

Anthony Isabella caught a pair of scoring passes for Brockway and had four grabs for 75 yards. He also intercepted a pass on defense.

Jacob Perrin was the leading Rover receiver with 89 yards on seven catches including a touchdown. Brandon Morris had six grabs for 44 yards and a score, Anthony Benson had three for 78 and a touchdown and Jason Faulk caught one pass for an 11-yard score.

Brockway, which amassed 412 yards o offense, also saw Chad Melillo rush 17 times for 112 yards while catching one pass for 26 yards. Kyle Titler added a 6-yard touchdown run on his lone carry of the game.

Johnsonburg (2-6), which trailed 14-13 at the end of one quarter but 42-19 at halftime, got another huge game from wide receiver Mitch Holmberg. Holmberg caught five passes for 147 yards including scoring passes of 45 and 63 yards from Frank Kocjancic. Holmberg also returned an interception 88 yards for a score and went 2-for-2 passing for 31 yards.

Kocjancic was 9 of 19 passing for 230 yards, three touchdowns and an interception and caught two passes for 31 yards. He hit Kyle Sheldon with a 55-yard scoring pass. Sheldon had three catches for 78 yards.

Johnsonburg, though, couldn’t run the ball picking up 14 yards on 29 carries.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 13, CURWENSVILLE 12

CURWENSVILLE – Mitchell Vallone hit Ryan Childs with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 3:13 to play, as Elk County Catholic won a key late-season road game over Curwensville Friday night despite being outgained 286-163.

The victory ties the Crusaders (6-2) with Curwensville (6-2) for the third seed out of the AML in the upcoming District 9 Class A playoffs. An ECC win next week over Otto-Eldred or a Curwensville loss to Sheffield gives the Crusaders the fifth seed in the postseason and knocks the Golden Tide to the sixth seed. The fifth seed plays the No. 2 team out of the KSAC – likely Union – while the sixth seed plays the No. 2 seed out of the AML – either Brockway or Port Allegany.

Curwensville, which ran 70 plays compared to ECC’s 35, trailed 7-6 at halftime before taking a 12-7 lead in the third quarter on 7-yard Hunter McCracken to Jordan Russell touchdown pass.

But ECC mounted a long 14-play, 76-yard touchdown drive to retake the lead late before Curwensville drove inside the Crusaders 30-yard line before being stopped on downs in the final minute.

Brock McCullough led ECC with 15 carries for 89 yards and scored the game’s first touchdown on a 39-yard run in the first quarter. Vallone was 4 of 9 for 43 yards and the score.

Zach Tibbens paced Curwensville with 25 carries for 135 yards but was stopped short of a first down by ECC’s Hank Cappiello on the Tides’ final offense play. Josh Greslick added 16 carries for 37 yards including a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, while McCracken was 11 of 19 for 89 yards with the touchdown and an interception. Russell had 10 catches for 63 yards and the score.

UNION 36, MONITEAU 27

WEST SUNBURY – Behind Kaden McGregor, Union beat Moniteau, 36-27,  for the first time since 2000 Friday at Moniteau.

McGregor ran 16 times for 131 yards and two touchdowns, caught two passes for 20 yards and a touchdown and was 1-for-1 passing for 63 yards and a touchdown.

That offset a monster game from Dustin Geagan, who led Moniteau (1-7) with 211 yards rushing and two touchdowns while going 6 of 18 passing for 96 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Aaron Graham added three catches for 132 yards and a touchdown for the Golden Knights (7-1), while Brody Shick was 4 of 17 passing for 89 yards a touchdown and an interception. Shick also scored on a 1-yard touchdown run.

Drew Yeckel caught a 28-yard touchdown pass for Moniteau and had two grabs for 38 yards while Trevor Shaffer had two catches for 47 yards. Andrew Armagost scored on a 1-yard run for the Warriors.

The game featured 33 first-quarter points with Union leading 20-13 at the end of the quarter. Moniteau came back and took a 21-20 halftime lead.

BROOKVILLE 28, CLARION-LIMESTONE 19

STRATTANVILLE — Brodie Zacherl scored three touchdowns and rushed for 187 yards on 23 carries to lead Brookville to a 28-19 win over stubborn Clarion-Limestone Friday night.

Zacherl, who also caught three passes for 60 yards, caught a 4-yard pass from Cameron Yard and scored on runs of 58 and 20 yards to give the Raiders a 21-0 lead at halftime.  Yard rushed for 113 yards on 17 carries and put the Raiders up 28-0 with his 1-yard run on the opening possession of the second half. Yard was also 6 of 14 passing for 72 yards, the touchdown and two picks.

But that’s all the Raiders (6-2) scored as Clarion-Limestone put three touchdowns on the scoreboard within a span of 5:36 in the fourth quarter. Christian Bakewell threw a pair of touchdown passes to Tommy Smith covering 28 and 11 yards, the second coming with 59 seconds left in the game. The Lions tried to get within seven points, but misfired on a two-point conversion pass.

The Lions (0-8) got a big night from Bakewell, who completed 22 of 44 passes for 240 yards with two interceptions to go along with his two TD passes. Sandwiched in between Bakewell’s two scoring strikes was Brent Slater’s 10-yard return of a fumble caused by Joe Tomasi’s hit on Raiders backup quarterback Bobby McGranor before he could hand the ball off to his running back.

For the Lions, Chase Alcorn caught nine passes for 96 yards, Mario Rombold grabbed six passes for 73 yards and Smith finished with seven catches for 71 yards.

The Raiders gained 424 yards, but turned the ball over six times and the teams combined for 24 penalties for 337 yards, 123-114 in favor of Brookville.

The 19 points are the most this season for C-L, which has dropped a school-record 17 straight decisions.

KANE 12, RIDGWAY 7

RIDGWAY – Sean Jordan threw a pair of first-half touchdown passes, which was just enough for the Kane Wolves to hold off the Ridgway Elkers in a 12-7 win Friday night.

Jordan connected with Jonah Smith for a 10-yarder in the first quarter, then hit Jeff Kocjancic from 31 yards out with 52 seconds left before halftime to give the Wolves (5-3) the lead for good. Jordan completed 10 of 19 passes for 134 yards. Jonah Smith rushed for 85 yards on 22 carries.

Ridgway (1-7) grabbed a 7-6 lead when quarterback Ben MacDonald scored on a 1-yard run less than two minutes into the second quarter.

CLEARFIELD 49, BALD EAGLE AREA 8

WINGATE – The visiting Clearfield Bison scored all of their points in the first half as they breezed to a 49-8 rout of Bald Eagle Area Friday night, improving to 8-0.

It was the Tyler Stratton and Christian Lezzer show as they had a hand in six of Clearfield’s seven touchdowns. Stratton scored the first three touchdowns in the first quarter on runs of 13, 3 and 5 yards. Then Lezzer took over, scoring on a 3-yard run, throwing an 84-yard TD pass to Trey Jordan and running one in himself from 11 yards out.

Lezzer completed just 3 of 6 passes, but the three completions went for 195 yards. He needed just nine carries to reach 108 yards. Stratton finished with 92 yards on 10 carries. Jordan's two catches yielded 159 yards.

Seth Ford scored the final Bison touchdown on a 19-yard run.

CLARION 42, PUNXSUTAWNEY 0

CLARION – Clarion scored on five of its six possessions while also returning a punt for a touchdown to shutout Punxsutawney 42-0.

It was the second shutout of the season for Clarion, while Punxsutawney was shutout for the first time in 28 games – Schenley in the PIAA playoffs Nov. 20, 2009 – and for the first time in the regular season since Oct. 10, 2008, when Redbank Valley blanked the Chucks – 40 regular-season games ago.

T.J. Armstrong and Camron Kirkland each scored a pair of touchdowns for the Bobcats (8-0), who are 8-0 for the first time since 2000, while John Katis threw a pair of touchdown passes – one to Damien Slike and one to Cody Hearst.

Armstrong ran for 97 yards and two scores on 12 carries while adding 10 tackles on defense, and Kirkland had six carries for 64 yards and a touchdown, returned a punt 77 yards for a score and caught three passes for 45 yards. Hearst had four grabs for 78 yards. Destin Strauser added five tackles and two sacks for Clarion, which sacked Punxsy quarterback Garrett Zimmerman four times.

The Chucks, who were limited to 97 yards of total offense after entering the game averaging 307 yards, got 60 yards rushing on 14 carries from Jamie Bush. Bush also caught one pass for nine yards and had a team-high seven tackles.

Despite the loss, Punxsutawney can still clinch a Class AAA playoff spot with a win over Moniteau next week and a Bradford loss to St. Marys. See Class AAA playoff outlook story.

PORT ALLEGANY 41, CAMERON COUNTY 0

EMPORIUM – Port Allegany took to the ground for its scoring Friday night rushing for five touchdowns in a 41-0 win at Cameron County.

Matt Bodamer rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw a touchdown for the Gators (8-0), who have won 13 straight regular-season games.

Bodamer ran 10 times for 67 yards including scoring runs of 15 and 2 yards. He was also 16 of 27 passing for 252 yards and the touchdown. Bodamer now has 9,440 yards passing and 121 touchdowns. He passed Brendan Nosovitch of Allentown Central Catholic to move into second place in Pennsylvania history for career yards. He is 312 yards shy of the Pennsylvania and District 9 record of 9,752 set by Brockway’s Derek Buganza. Bodamer has also rushed for 1,913 yards and 36 touchdowns in his four years at Port Allegany.

Trent Neal added a pair of touchdown runs for the Gators scoring on runs of 3 and 16 yards and rushing 11 times for 68 yards. Nick Conway caught a 19-yard touchdown pass and had five grabs for 96 yards with Tyce Miller catching nine passes for 127 yards.

The Port Allegany defense recorded its third shutout of the year, the most for the Gators since recording three in 1992. Port Allegany hasn’t had more than three shutouts in one year since recording seven during its perfect 10-0 season in 1986.

Cameron County was limited to 87 yards of offense and five first downs. Antonio Johnson led the Red Raiders with 34 yards rushing.

SMETHPORT 21, SHEFFIELD 3

SMETHPORT – Smethport kept its District 9 Class A playoff hopes alive with a 21-3 win over visiting Sheffield Friday night.

Clay Schuler hit Ryan Corbett with three touchdown passes Friday night to put the Hubbers (4-4) on the verge of their first postseason berth since 2010 and just their second since 2005.

Smethport can secure a District 9 wild-card berth with a win next week over Ridgway or a Coudersport loss to Kane.

Schuler hit Corbett with scoring tosses of 66, 76 and 8 yards with the middle one putting the cap on a 95-yard drive with 7:16 left in the game that broke open a four-point game and gave Smethport a 14-3 lead.

Schuler was 11 of 16 on the night for 232 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 77 yards on14 carries. Corbett had 137 yards receiving on three catches, while Karl Lightner had eight tackles and an interception.

Shequan Wright booted a 30-yard field goal for the Wolverines (2-6), who were all but eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. Wright also ran 13 times for 65 yards.

COUDERSPORT 38, OTTO-ELDRED 8

COUDERSPORT – Coudersport continued its late-season charge and kept its District 9 Class A playoff hopes alive with a 38-8 win over visiting Otto-Eldred Friday night.

Caden Whitman ran 15 times for 167 yards and a touchdown and returned an interception 50 yards for a score for the Falcons (3-5), while Mitch Freeman added 15 carries for 59 yards and two scores. Patrick Bollhorst also caught a 35-yard scoring pass from Ethan Hite, and the Falcons recorded a safety.

Otto-Eldred’s lone score came on a 4-yard Sam Colebert run. The loss dropped the Terrors to 2-6.

Coudersport could possibly clinch a playoff spot next week with a win over Kane and a Smethport loss. The Falcons would definitely clinch a postseason berth with a win next week and a pair of A-C Valley losses (A-C Valley plays Clarion next week and West Shamokin in Week 10 while Coudersport is off in Week 10). There is a chance for a three-way tie for the seventh and eighth playoff spots as well between Coudersport, Smethport and A-C Valley. If all three teams finish 4-5, the PIAA Power Rating system would be used. It is now known if Coudersport’s win over Smethport would factor in a three-way tiebreaker. If Coudersport and A-C Valley both finish 4-5 and tied for eighth, then the Power Points  would definitely be used to break the tie.

DUBOIS 39, WARREN 13

WARREN – Behind 275 yards rushing and four total touchdowns from Garrett Brown, DuBois passed its first test of the District 10 Region 5 season with flying colors Friday night beating Warren 39-13 in Warren.

Brown ran 32 times for 275 yards and scored on carries of 1 and 64 yards. He also caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from Gabe French on the final play of the first half that gave DuBois a 19-13 halftime lead and also returned a kickoff 88 yards for a score following Warren’s game-opening touchdown. Warren (6-2, 3-2) got a touchdown run from Chris McNeal to take an early 7-0 lead and then saw Mark Davis catch a 15-yard touchdown pass from Austin Jerman with 35 seconds left in the first half to tie the score at 13 just before Brown’s touchdown to end the half.

Justin Fishkin, Aaron’s brother, had a pair of long kickoff returns while adding an offensive fumble recovery in the end zone for a score.

Meadville (4-4., 2-3) led 7-0 at halftime before the second half turned into a wild shootout. Bradford got within seven, 35-28, with 2:28 left on the Aaron Fishkin scoring run set up by a 60-plus yard kickoff return by Justin Fishkin. But Meadville recovered the on-side kick and put the game away on a Harkness touchdown run.

Despite the loss, Bradford still controls its own destiny in the Class AAA playoff race. See outlook story.
