DUBOIS, Pa. – Albert Varacallo, a local man and former star basketball player at DuBois Central Catholic, is in the process of attempting to put together a basketball team for charity in “The Basketball Tournament”, a 5-on-5 winner-take-all basketball tournament worth $2 million dollars being held in Philadelphia and New York in July and early August.

“I’m entering a team in The Basketball Tournament this summer and am looking  for votes and for players to be on the roster,” Varacallo told D9Sports.com. “In order to qualify for the tournament a play for a grand prize of $2 million my team – The DuBois Dream – needs to be in the top 12 in voting. We are currently sitting at No. 15 with a great shot at moving forward with the help of the fans in District 9.”

Varacallo isn’t entering this team for his own benefit but rather to benefit two local causes close to his heart – The Miracle Field Project in DuBois for kids with disabilities and the Dr. Albert Varacallo Foundation, a non-profit foundation that honors Varacallo’s late father Albert, Sr., by awarding scholarships and helping people and families who have dealt with tragic or sudden loss.

“When I saw the support the community was showing me in entering a team in this tournament, it only seemed right I tied it into two causes and give back where everyone can benefit if we win,” Varacallo said. “I had already planned on playing for my dad’s foundation at the start, but when I saw what the city wanted to do with the Miracle Field Project, I had to get on board with that as well.
