Jan. 23, 2020 Boys’/Girls’ Hoops: ECC Boys Rally Past Bradford to Stay Unbeaten; O-E Girls Knock Off Port Allegany

BOYS

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 47, BRADFORD 43

BRADFORD, Pa. – Carter Lindemuth and Mark Kraus each hit a fourth-quarter 3-pointer to help Elk County Catholic rally past Bradford and remain unbeaten with a 47-43 D9 League road win.

The Crusaders, who are 16-0, have now won 38 straight regular-season game since losing, 56-54, to Bradford at home Feb. 13, 2018.

Thursday night that streak was in jeopardy when ECC fell behind by a point, 32-31, going to the fourth quarter. But behind the 3-pointers and solid free-throw shooting from Charlier Breindel (5 of 6 in the fourth quarter) the Crusaders outscored the Owls by five, 16-11, in the final eight minutes.

Kraus ended up hitting three 3-pointers in the game and scored a team-high 15 points, while Regis Worthman added 11 points and Leo Gregory seven.

Tyler Gigliotti had a game-best 19 points for Bradford with Steven Knowlton adding 13 points. Evan Schmidt added a team-high 11 rebounds to go with one point.

Both teams made 15 shots from the field (Bradford was 15 of 40 and ECC was 15 of 39), including four 3-pointers each. But the Crusaders won the game at the line where they went 13 of 15 (86.7 percent) compared to the Owls 9 of 14 (64.3 percent).

UNION 62, VENANGO CATHOLIC 27

RIMERSBURG, Pa. – Karter Vogle scored eight of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter to help Union snap a five-game losing streak wit ha 62-27 KSAC North win over visiting Venango Catholic.

Behind Vogle’s early success, the Golden Knights built a 21-9 lead after the first quarter.

Luke Bowser (13 points) and Truman Vereb (10 points) gave Union three players in double digits, while Caden Rainey and Layton Stewart each chipped in eight points.

Andrew Burda had 12 points for Venango Catholic with Colin Deeter adding seven.

AUSTIN 74, TIDIOUTE CHARTER 44

AUSTIN, Pa. – Tidioute Charter will be seeing Glovers in their nightmares.

Jackson, Parker and Joseph Glover combined for 56 points and 16 rebounds to lead Austin past the visiting Bulldogs, 74-44.

Jackson Glove led the Panthers with 23 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Parker Glover added 20 points and four rebounds, and Joseph Glover had 13 points aid six rebounds. Aydan Nicka chipped in seven points in the win.

Derek Klos scored a game-high 27 points for Tidioute Charter with Dalton Kennedy adding 14 points.

GIRLS

PUNXSUTAWNEY 53, DUBOIS 42

DUBOIS, Pa. – Chloe Presloid hit a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers to help Punxsutawney pull away from DuBois for a 53-42 road D9 League victory.

Behind the hot shooting of Chloe Presloid, the Lady Chucks outscored the Lady Beaver, 22-16, in the fourth quarter to expand upon a five-point, 31-26, lead going to the quarter. DuBois was still within four later in the quarter before Punxsy hit free throws to seal the victory.

Chloe Presloid was one of four Punxsutawney players in double digits finishing with 10 points while adding eight rebounds.

Sarah Weaver led the Lady Chucks with 12 points and added three steals, three assists and three rebounds, Ryley Casaday chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists, Riley Presloid had 10 points, three assists and three steals and Kierstin Riley added nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Saige Weible was one of three DuBois players in double figures with 12 points. Abby Guiher added 11 tallies for the Lady Beavers and Olivia Johnson scored 10 points.

The win was Punxsutawney’s fourth in a row and sixth in its last seven games, while the loss snapped a five-game win streak for DuBois.

UNION 51, VENANGO CATHOLIC 29

OIL CITY, Pa. – Keira Croyle and Dominika Logue each scored 14 points to lead visiting Union to a 51-29 win over Venango Catholic in KSAC North action.

Logue completed a double-double with 13 rebounds and also had eight steals and seven assists.

Maggie Minick and Hailey Kriebel each chipped in seven points for the Golden Damsels, who won for the second straight time and for the third time in four games.

Emmy Ekis had a game-high 19 points to go with six rebounds and three steals for Venango Catholic, while Hope Winger added four points and six rebounds.

COUDERSPORT 55, GALETON 25

GALETON, Pa. – Sarah Chambers and Mikayla Gunn combined to score 33 points to help Coudersport to a 55-25 road NTL win over Galeton.

Chambers led all scorers with 17 points with Gunn adding 16 for the Lady Falcons, who remained unbeaten in NTL action at 11-0.

Lauren Stimaker also pitched in 12 points in the victory for Coudersport.

Alli Macensky led Galeton with six points, six rebounds, five blocked shots, two steals and an assist with Lauren Sauley also scoring six points to go with five rebounds and a steal.

OTTO-ELDRED 59, PORT ALLEGANY 51

PORT ALLEGANY, Pa. – Visiting Otto-Eldred used a strong second half to exact some revenge on Port Allegany, who beat the Lady Terrors at home earlier in the season, with a 59-51 road NTL victory.

The game was tied at 24 at halftime, but Otto-Eldred built a four-point lead, 41-37, at the end of the third quarter before extending it in the final eight minutes.

Katie Sheeler led the Lady Terrors with 15 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists with Kayley Heller recording a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds and Brianna Heller adding 13 points. Reilly Raught also had 12 rebounds to go with nine points in the win, while Morgan Dalton added seven points, five rebounds and four assists.

Cailey Barnett exploded for a game-high 33 points while draining seven 3-pointers for the Lady Gators and added five rebounds and five steals. Bree Garzel chipped in 14 points, eight rebounds and four helpers, and Evin Stauffer had two points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Both Port Allegany and Otto-Eldred are now two games back of Coudersport in the loss column in the NTL standings.

NORTHERN POTTER 52, SMETHPORT 22

ULYSSES, Pa. – Aubrey Anderson and Megan Hyden teamed up to score 29 points, as Northern Potter rolled past visiting Smethport, 52-22, in NTL action.

Anderson led all scorers with 15 points with Hyde adding 14 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Courtney Martin chipped in eight points and seven steals in the win for the Lady Panthers.

Sabrina Tanner led Smethport with nine points and nine rebounds.

TIDIOUTE CHARTER 31, AUSTIN 25

AUSTIN, Pa. – Angelina Sabella scored six of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter to help visiting Tidioute Charter rally for a 31-25 win at Austin.

The Lady Bulldogs trailed 23-20 after the third quarter after failing to score in the third quarter but rode the play of Sabella to an 11-2 fourth-quarter advantage.

Nakiesha Krouse added eight points in the win for Tidioute Charter.

Taylor Brewer had a double-double for Austin with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Sari Setzer scored six points. Kendra Valenti chipped in two points, five rebounds and four blocked shots, and Kylie Welsh had nine rebounds, five blocked shot and a point.

FRIENDSHIP CENTRAL (N.Y.) 28, OSWAYO VALLEY 20

SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. – Friendship Central (N.Y.) made the 30-minute trip south across the state line a successful one with a 28-20 win over Oswayo Valley.

Kadence Donahue led the Eagles with 13 points.

Jadyn Brabham paced Oswayo Valley with six tallies.

NORTH CLARION 66, KANE 28

KANE, Pa. – Racing out to a 12-point lead by the end of the first quarter, visiting North Clarion rolled past Kane, 66-28, to remain unbeaten at 15-0.

The She-Wolves, who won at Kane, 43-34, over the Christmas break, made sure this game wasn’t as close building a 16-4 lead after eight minutes thanks in part to a pair of 3-pointers from Gabby Schmader.

The lead grew to 30-13 by halftime with Claire Kriebel and Abby Gatesman each hitting 3-pointers, as North Clarion hit five more triples two days after hitting 10 in a win over Redbank Valley.

Mackenzie Bauer paced the She-Wolves with a game-high 15 points, 13 after the break, while adding six steals and three assists. Gatesman added 12 points, five assists and three steals, Gwen Siegel chipped in nine points, Haley Sherman Schmader each scored eight points and Kriebel had a career-best seven points.

Sarri Swanson paced Kane with eight points with Emily Bucheit adding seven.

MARION CENTER 75, DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 41

MARION CENTER, Pa. – Scoring at least 20 points in three of the four quarters, Marion Center had little trouble beating visiting DuBois Central Catholic for the second time this season gaining a 75-41 win.

The game was not nearly as close as the Dec. 7 contest won by the Lady Stingers, 54-52, as Marion Center jumped out to a 20-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 31-23 at halftime before outscoring the Lady Cardinals 44-18 in the second half netting 22 points in each quarter of the half.

Jerzey Coble scored a game-high 19 points in the win with Laney Monroe adding 12 points and Shawna Cook 10.

Jordan Kosko had a team-best 11 points for DCC with Shay Gulvas scoring 10 and Martina Swalligan eight.

CAMERON COUNTY 45, BUCKTAIL 24

RENOVO, Pa. – Kaelee Bresslin exploded for 28 points while going 11 of 15 from the free-throw line to lead visiting Cameron County to a 45-24 win over Bucktail.

Morgan Lorenzo chipped in eight points in the win for the Lady Raiders.

Myka Poorman paced Bucktail with eight points.
