VENANGO CATHOLIC 62, REDBANK VALLEY 55

OIL CITY, Pa. – Brady Kingston scored a game-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds to lead No. 11 Venango Catholic to a 62-55 win over No. 8 Redbank Valley Friday night at Venango.

“I thought Brady played pretty well,” Venango Catholic Ed McIntyre said. “He attacked the rim in the open floor, he took care of the ball well for us and he played pretty good defense. I thought he played a great all-around game.”

The Vikings (12-4), who used a 10-2 run late in the third quarter to build a 10-point lead, had a quick 5-0 spurt midway through the fourth quarter to go ahead 55-45 with 3:15 to play.

Redbank Valley (14-4) used a quick 8-0 run to get back within two, 55-53, with 2:03 to play on a Sam Heeter 3-pointer. Heeter also had an old-school three during the spurt.

But Venango Catholic hit five of its next six charity shots to go up seven, 60-53, with 44 seconds left.

“I thought (the kids) stayed mentally tough,” McIntrye said. “They were able to run what we wanted them to run, to execute the plays and get to the free-throw line. Overall, I thought they took care of the ball after (the Redbank run). I think they really wanted to win, and they put in a good effort today.”

Devin Zagar added a double-double for Venango Catholic with 14 points and 12 rebounds while also blocking three shots. Scott Toy had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Luke Plumer 10 points and eight boards.

Devin Shumaker led Redbank Valley with 17 points, while Zach Westover had 14 points and 10 rebounds while blocking a pair of shots. Heeter also scored 14 points, while Jake Dougherty had eight points and eight rebounds before fouling out with 3:31 to play.
