Kane Girls, ECC Boys Capture AML Titles


St. Marys, Pa. – Kane and Elk County Catholic took home AML basketball championships Saturday with Kane winning the girls title and ECC the boys crown at St. Marys High School.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Wolves won their third consecutive AML title with a 45-40 win over ECC, while in the boys’ game, ECC held off Johnsonburg, 49-42.

GIRLS: KANE 45, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 40

Ainsley Saf hit four first-half 3-pointers to help Kane take a seven-point, 23-16, lead at the break, and she added another triple in the third quarter to help the Lady Wolves extend the advantage to 10, 35-25.

ECC fought back in the fourth quarter behind five points from Brooke Bauer and four each from Taylor Newton and Tami Geci and closed within one with two minutes to play but couldn’t get over the top.

Saf finished with a game-high 18 points for Kane with 12 of those coming in the first half, while Emily Bucheit added 14 points.

Newton had a double-double for ECC with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Eight of her points came after halftime. Brooke Bauer added 10 points while hitting a pair of 3-pointers.

Both teams advance to the District 9 playoffs.

Kane (15-9) is the seventh seed in the Class 2A bracket and will face No. 2 seed Redbank Valley Friday at Punxsutawney High School, while ECC (14-10) is the fourth seed in the Class 1A bracket and will face Union at Punxsutawney High School Thursday.

BOYS: ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 49, JOHNSONBURG 42

Starting strong, Elk County Catholic captured the AML boys’ championship with the 49-42 win over Johnsonburg.

Mark Kraus scored seven first-quarter points to help ECC take a 14-8 lead after on quarter, and the Crusaders extended the advantage to 25-17 by halftime thanks to a 3-pointer by Kraus and four points from Regis Wortman, who made his return to the lineup after missing the past three games.

Kraus and Regis Wortman each scored a team-high 12 points for ECC with Leo Gregory and Isaac Wortman each adding eight points.

Gabe Watts scored 13 of his game-high 15 points in the second half for Johnsonburg, while Austin Green added 13 points and Eric Christoff eight tallies thanks to a pair of 3-pointers.

Both teams advance to the District 9 Class 1A playoffs. ECC (23-1) is the top seed and will play the winner of the Austin/Northern Potter game Friday at Bradford High School. Johnsonburg (16-8) is the fourth seed and will take on fifth-seeded A-C Valley Friday at DuBois High School.
