Weather Playing Havoc With Football Playoffs: All Games Friday Involving D9 Postponed

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – The early winter storm that hit the area Thursday into Friday has caused a widespread problem in the District 9 and PIAA playoff games involving District 9 teams with no games being played Friday and the two District 9 title games still up in the air as to when and where they will be played.

The PIAA Class 4A first-round game between Erie Cathedral Prep and Clearfield is now being played at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Slippery Rock University. The game had been slated for 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium. The game is not being played at Clarion Saturday because the school has refused to clear its field, according to District 9 football chairman Bob Tonkin.

The District 9 Class 2A championship game between Ridgway and Brockway scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at DuBois’ Mansell Stadium has been postponed to a date, time and location to be announced. The game has been postponed because of DuBois’ refusal to clear its field, according to Tonkin.

The District 9 Class 1A championship game that has been moved from 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in Bradford to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in DuBois has now been put up in the air because of DuBois’ refusal to clear its field. A time, date and location to be announced.

According to Tonkin, the refusal to clear the fields has to do with the entities involved worried about damaging their turf fields because of potential ice layers under the snow.

More information on the D9 title games will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
