CURWENSVILLE, Pa. (EYT/D9) — District 9 is home to four girls wrestling teams this season – Clearfield, Curwensville, Punxsutawney, and Redbank Valley – the inaugural year of competition under the auspices of the PIAA.
Since Curwensville was the first of the four schools to sanction the sport, it was only fitting that the Golden Tide girls team saw the first official action of the 2023-2024 season – competing in the Inter-County Conference Tournament at Claysburg-Kimmel High School on Dec. 2.
It’s safe to say the Curwensville squad did more than compete, as two grapplers won titles in pacing the squad to the team championship.
Curwensville’s Savanah Carfley pinned Northern Bedford’s Emily Dennis in the first period (1:24) to win the 136-pound title.

Three other Curwensville athletes wrestled in the finals, but had to settle for runner-up status – Jordin Peoples at 112 pounds, Tessa Queen at 142 pounds, and Taylor Shirey at 170 pounds.
Also participating for Curwensville were Matilyn McCracken (136 pounds) and Kylee Hilterman (170 pounds).
Curwensville (120 points) won the team championship, besting second place Northern Bedford (94 points) by 26 points.
The Curwensville girls team returns to action on Sunday, in Elizabethtown (Pa.) at the Elizabethtown Girls BAGUBA
